I can't test that out as I am still behind the times with good ole Kanthal and no TC mods. :|

Using 28 gauge Ti I started at 420 deg F in TC mode and slowly worked my way up to 600. Never heated, the wire looks mostly silver but looks like it has some kind of a film on it. If I slide it between my thumb and fingertip it leaves behind a light, black line on my skin. I did not clean that film off the wire. After a couple of hits of power it did not mark my skin anymore. Before the first power up:

By the time I got to 600 F the wire had not glowed yet. Considering the temperature error from Ni, the wire had probably maxed out around 750 F. The color had changed to blueish brown depending on the light. I saw no indication of anything white on it.

I turned off the TC and used the power to control the wire temperature. By the time the wire started to just glow there was some whitening of the wire. I continued without disturbing the wire until I maxed out at 35 watts and I think the wire almost ignited. I did it again and got a shot of it. Note the increase in brightness at the 3 o-clock position. I probably had a couple of minutes of power-on time in the wire by then. When I touched the wire it broke where the hot spot had been and the rest of the wire was so fragile it would break when I bent it a bit. It does not like to be overheated as much as I had!

At that time, this is what I found on the wire:

So I replaced the wire with a new one and set 18 watts at which the wire just starts to fully glow.

You can barely tell the wire is glowing because of the camera flash. Here's a shot without flash:

After 4-5 minutes at heat the wire has what I think is a very thin coat of white on it. I tried to crack it or scrape it off with my fingernail and couldn't see anything coming off. It also didn't make a line on my skin being slid between finger and thumb. The wire was still as strong as it was when new.

It seems to me this is TiO2, titanium dioxide. Here's the Wikipedia page on it. It's used as white pigment in paint, sunscreen and UV blocker for us and in industry. The IARC classifies it as 'possibly carcinogenic to humans' when inhaled as a dust. The stuff I got off my coil is not dust and when I try to make it crumble with a fingertip it doesn't turn to powder, it makes something like sand.

Also from the Wiki page:

"The body of research regarding the carcinogenicity of different particle sizes of titanium dioxide has led the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to recommend two separate exposure limits. NIOSH recommends that fine TiO2 particles be set at an exposure limit of 2.4 mg/m3, while ultrafine TiO2 be set at an exposure limit of 0.3 mg/m3, as time-weighted average concentrations up to 10 hours a day for a 40-hour work week.[64] These recommendations reflect the findings in the research literature that show smaller titanium dioxide particles are more likely to pose carcinogenic risk than the larger titanium dioxide particles."

There's a lot more information on TiO2 out there if anyone feels like doing more research on it.

From the little research I did, it was estimated that 300,000 Americans was vaping in 2010. As of Feb the estimate was at 2.5 million. In 2010 from what I understand, most people used high PG liquid. Now its the opposite and more people use high VG over PG. With that in mind I believe its safe to assume that what was previously a standard is now outdated and people are making new standards. As was previously pointed out, people will naturally put the larger number first.

When I started driving we basically had two kinds of gas, regular and unleaded. Now days, around here at least, we have regular and non-ethanol. Its still about the same stuff, makes your car go zoom-zoom, but it is different and the meaning of regular has evolved. In other words the old regular had lead and the new does not.

As long as I'm buying the product that suits my personal needs I can call it whatever I want. If I'm in a group and we are just kicking it I can still call it what I want even if it different then everyone else. If I'm in a situation where the differance is important I better call things what the normal for that time and place is. For example if I'm having a tantrum and think it should still be called regular and I'm driving a car that needs lead for lubrication and I ask for regular gas and they give me the new regular its nobodies fault but mine when the motor locks.

I thought you could not dry burn Titanium or Nickle wire?
It's not advisable, but can be done if you know the signs to look for showing you have done it too much, like the forming of a white powdery coating on ti (that's the titanium dioxide).

Thanks for the excellent tests and pictures of the Ti wire dry burn.
:toast:

What had me curious and concerned was chopdoc's picture of bright glowing Ti coils he posted here.

Last night around 1am I realized I was asleep in my recliner. Woke a bit and reached for a quick puff and realized the coil was gunked. :glare:

I don't remember doing it but apparently I re-coiled and re-wicked my KFv4 while basically sleeping.

Strange

You've done it often enough that you can do it in your sleep ...

Well, sleep-coiling is a lot more useful than sleep-walking

Apparently fixing things in my sleep is not new. According to my wife I have fixed leaking toilets, changed out buzzing light switches and replaced the vacuum switch in the furnace while remembering nothing the next day.

Yikes.. Three is my limit if I'm feeling rowdy and that would take 4-5 hours. I like the taste but not the effects.

I liked everything about it... except the next morning. ;) And the fact that my son's life between ages 2 and 4 are mostly a blank. :( Thank god for his daddy! No clue how anyone can raise a child without 2 parents.

Heh. I'm sure that's true. My 12pk a day DEFINITELY did. :D

Andria

My daily was a 9 pack of 16oz.'s or more. Today is day 4 of breaking that habit, I know that's not a milestone by any means but I had been drinking that much for years. One day at a time but I already feel much better I will miss my old friend.
