Rixy, don't let anyone scare you about coming here. Stay away from the big cities, and you guys will have fun.
I came from one of those "big West Coast cities" (so did Rich), and I'll tell you, even though I was born and raised there, the traffic in the city proper made me cry. I couldn't WAIT to get away from there. Plus most of the people were just rude. Not so in the smaller towns and cities. Now we live in a ghost town. Used to be "Population: 2" but the guy passed away, and his wife moved down the road to live with her kids. We live in the 'burbs. So the population of the town is now zero, but there's a little one-room school house (seriously!) there that has about 12 or 15 students of all ages from the surrounding ranches. We live half a mile out of "town." 
Traveling a lot of route 66 had always been on my bucket list!!
