Slightly naughty is good.

I usually make 3 mm coils as I hate trying to stuff a bunch of cotton in a little coil. This should be straightforward with lots of fluffing and gently tucking. I am starting with simple coils, no Claptons right off the bat for me.

OK, so Boden, you probably get sick of being the resident coil master, but what's you stance on spaced vs compressed? When, if ever, is it better to use one vs the other?
I know.....I know........pick me!!!

It don't make no difference!

Compressed? I'm assuming you mean contact.

Btw the people you see squeezing coils to get rid of hotspots have no idea what they are doing.

My opinion on spaced vs contact. Huh?.. Don't have one. I do know the maths though. Here are the givens. Both coils same number of wraps and ID and watts. One spaced one contact.

A contact coil is 13% more effiecient (more vapors) at the same wattage. The spaced coil will give a slightly warmer vape.

Most of the time if you hear someone describe a build as tastier they mean warmer.

Anyone ever bother with something like a 1/8" bolt to make nice evenly spaced coils?
lotsa folks used to and probably still use I think it's a 4-40 machine screw to do that. Dunno if that's the same thing or not

I just wrap on the 3mm screwdriver shaft, pull with coils apart then push them back together for a perfectly spaced coil.

I've tried that but they somehow come out a little off. I figured something like a screw or bolt would do the trick for quick even spacing.

Ni200 coils have to be spaced and need 800K wraps to bring the resistance up to a usable value. It was hard to fit them on most decks if you used a screw to wrap them and the wire was a little too soft for the spring method. So I would wrap a contact coil, mount it, then take an X-Acto blade and run it between each coil to space it out. This created nice fine spacing.

Thankfully my Ni200 is gathering dust in a box, never to be used again. SS430 is my goto wire these days and it doesn't care if it's used in VW or TC, spaced or contact.

The advantage of a machine screw to wrap coils with is you can mount it, pull it tight on the posts and then remove the screw after it is all clamped down and centered.

If you want to use a screw for the SQuape or GEM, you'll need a screw with a left handed thread to wrap the coil and have it mount properly. ;)

I love watching your videos, you actually explain why you do things. So many people don't. By the way, not that it matters to me but you know that video is gonna drive some people crazy due to the overhang.;)

I've got some SS316L just for the convenience of dual use. Especially now that I have several tanks in rotation, and can't remember which are OK for TC and which were not. Yay crappy memory!

I still like building with Kanthal at times. Did you settle on 430 for TC reasons? I never even bothered with Ni given the flexibility SS offers.
