This is not good (my two cents)

I'm reading the "public vaping" forum, and beginning to shudder.

E-cig's are a relatively new thing. They will be accepted, banned, misunderstood, feared, loved, and hated. I can't believe what I've read in some threads.

Some here just don't understand, don't really care, or can't conceive the "big picture".

E-cigs are a touchy situation right now. They're already banned in some countries, yet some e-cig users boldly walk into a place, and just start vaping as if they own the place or to see the reaction of certain people. There is no better way to paint a poor picture of e-cig use. If people keep this up, we'll get crushed by the opisition.

E-cigs are not totally accepted. We need to be careful until we have enough support on our side. Being arrogant will not help the cause. I like my e-cig, and I don't want to loose it.

Please people, lets use some common sense. Make others see that this is a good thing.

I've had nothing but good reactions to my e-cig. I don't push things, don't vape in bars unless invited by the staff and always try to smile and explain instead of demand to be accommodated. Being enthusiastic instead of defensive helps, I think.

It's the only way to win this war. I hope you rub off on some of the others.

For some reason, I can't post a new thread here, so I'll post in this thread and hope a mod moves it for me.

I was at a showing of Gone With the Wind at the Fox Theater in Atlanta tonight with my girlfriend. Since it's a four hour long film, there is an intermission in between the two halves.

During the intermission, I stood up and stretched my legs. I decided now was as good a time as any to puff on my ecig. I have an NJOY NPRO so it does look like a real cig. I kept holding the ember end in a closed fist between puffs so anyone who saw would realize it's not a real cigarette.

Suddenly, some guy from the other side of the balcony from me, yells out loud enough to silence the balcony "SIR THIS IS A NO SMOKING THEATER!" He's not an usher, he's not an employee. Just a guy yelling at me from about 60 feet away in a crowded theater.

There's no real oportunity for me to explain what's up. I unscrew the two pieces and put them back together, calling out. "It's not a cigarrette." Then basically give up as it's a lost cause.

I turned to sit down and muttered to the mother and early twenties daughter sitting behind me that it really isn't a cigarrette. The daughter responds.

"Oh, I know. I have a friend who has one. He likes to annoy people in public with it just like you."

I pretty much gave up completely at this point. I'm really angry what happened. The reaction from the man and, even more so, the words of the young woman.

It was my first experience with vaping in public and it went terribly. There was no chance to explain and people already had their minds made up about it.

That must have really sucked. I personally think the public has not yet been educated enough to understand the mechanics of the electric cigarette and when they see the vapor they associate it with smoking.

I took my 901 to the mall with me yesterday but never used it openly. In fact I ducked into the mens room a few times and went outside for a few hits. Have to admit it felt sneaky, but I havent had an analog in a few days so I'm really excited about that.

I've been called out in public several times. What I do is take a huge hit and 'stub' the glowing end on my forehead. 'It's not a cigarette' works a lot better after that.

I'm not as willing to indulge in these little amusements as I once was, but a screaming puritan motivates me every time. I posted long ago that challenging the unshakeable moral high ground of people who feel entitled to call me out across a crowded room is hugely satisfying, and it works too. Your guy undoubtedly beat a crowd of like-minded people to the scream, so I sorta try to make them look foolish or ashamed (not easy with puritans)

Good opportunity to make the onlookers think twice about shouting at a stranger. Shame you were caught off-balance.

There's always next time!

While vaping is certainly not covered by the smoking ban, thus in itself not banned, I find it is best to respect the rules of the establishment. If those with authority tell you to go outside after you have explained it is not tobacco, go outside. It's not worth the hassle, the drama, the risk or the trouble to continue to defend your position and make a scene. In my opinion, those who flaunt it and make dramatic scenes to defend it against establishment authorities only hurt the cause.

As long as people continue to act like criminals, stealthily blowing vapor into clothing, hiding in dark places, and behaving as if they are doing something wrong; they will be treated like criminals. Ask if the owner of the place minds if you use your e cig. If they say ok, go for it. If they are unreasonable, accept their policy, and speak with your money by not returning. E cig users will get no acceptance if they act as if they are doing something wrong. If you saw someone hiding their habit, acting all nervous about using this product, what would your perception of the e cig be?

I am very brazen about vaping. If I'm going to vape at the bar, I make sure the bartender knows what it is and how it works.

And if he says it's not allowed?

Vaping in public is a way to educate people and it is only through education that we can gain acceptance.

And it can also be a way of ticking people off and further alienating our cause. As we have seen, not everyone (not even some smokers!) is supportive of vaping.

There's a ton of difference between trying to educate an amenable group.....and alienating an adverse one. And its about having the smarts to know the difference.

The general trend towards peoples vaping habits are good. I have been a stong proponant to the "respect smoking bans". It burns me (no pun intended) when people say, "look, you can get around smoking bans!" I dont even think asking a bar owner is ok. I personally dont want the entire establishment looking at me, then the patrons start going to the employees about "that guy over there smoking", its just not worth it to me. I have a simple motto:

"If you CANT smoke here, I WONT vape here"
My best,

When I bought my NPRO, I picked it out because it looked the most like a cigarette. I was hoping the physical similarities would help with any mental smoking linkage. I think that was a good decision but the fact that I have what is basically an immitation cigarette means using it in public is asking for trouble.

Anyone know of any models with a vapor output close to that of an NJOY NPRO but looks more like a.... techno... not... cigarette?

Strayling, so far what's been the overall reaction from establishments in Seattle? Olympia has been pretty nice about it.

If you Njoy (sorry, couldn't resist) using your NPRO, then when it's battery replacement time, get one that is not white. The carts that Puresmoker sells are black. You can have the NPRO with the same feel, but a different look.

I think the burgundy battery with a black cart might look pretty nice :)
