This is why we have to be thorough when mixing with high nic bases

I'm fairly new to DIY also, but I did my research first as well. I also do it in (mix things) the same order, check recheck and double check measurements and make sure I am not distracted. I also read that it is not a good idea to start out using high concentrations of nic base. I started with 36mg base. My last order is 60mg. Not sure if I'd be comfortable with 100mg? I also agree that some people with videos on youtube are really bad or careless. Sorry your friend had a bad experience but does sound like he was careless. Be careful - be safe! :)

I shoot my nic first then cap it and move on so there is never an issue of what might happen. Don't try to do to many things at once is the moral of this story. Once you develop a proper method and understand what your doing it's not an issue. But potentially nic at any concentration can be dangerous if you don't respect it. So it's not wise to be less cautious just because you use a lesser strength.

I personally have my nic in a different color bottle than anything else.
I also use separate syringes for every ingredient and each syringe is labeled.
Once I add an ingredient to my mixing bottle that ingredient gets capped and moved away and the syringe immediately goes into the cup of vodka so that it can not be reused accidentally.

It sounds like your friend may need to devise a system to ensure his/her safety so something like that does not happen again.
I'm glad that your friend is ok though.

Safety is non negotiable people, you have to look out for yourself because no one else is going to do it for you.

No, I have no idea where this is going.

I often vape 36 mg juice; that's what I started with. 40Mg juice should not be life-threatening.
Did your friend go on Belgian TV and claim "E-cigarettes almost killed me"?

I find your attitude offensive. Anyone who does DIY SHOULD know to try out a small sample at first. SHOULD know to let it steep and mix well. SHOULD understand proportions, and what he or she is mixing.

Hi-concentration nic base is NOT the problem. And you act as if the "incident" was something that everybody should stand up and take notice of. "really bad case of sea sickness and a headache" ?? Yeah, sounds like too much nicotine. Didn't kill him, didn't fry his brain, didn't cause him to jump off a ledge or get committed to a mental hospital. Didn't need a hypo of adrenaline straight to the heart to get her back on her feet and back home before her boyfriend killed John Travolta.

I got you beat. I knew where this was going before I even opened the thread.

As per usual, I am being told as a responsible adult that because some around me choose to exhibit the cognitive ability of my cat, that I too must be stupid, and saved from hurting myself or others. Or offending someone. Or hurting the cause, whatever that means.

I am giving serious thought to the possibility that Darwin might be right. In my life, I have operated large format printing presses that could easily turn you into hamburger if you did the wrong thing. I have built circuit boards using chemicals that could burn your skin off or create poisonous gas if improperly mixed. I have ridden motorcycles and operated chain saws. I have owned and used firearms since the age of 8. I have driven in NYC and Boston. I have done hundreds of other things that were potentially harmful or fatal if done incorrectly yet, here I am typing this as I enjoy my coffee, safe and sound.

No offense meant OP, but your buddy should have been a bit more careful. I fail to see how either his lack of knowledge, his carelessness, or both have anything to do with me.

You might want to have him read the stickies and such in the DIY section here before his next attempt at mixing his own juice.

I use solely 100mg nic VG base for my mixed. I have about thirty different syringes that I took the time to carefully label for which ingredient that each uses. Anyone who DIY's knows there are risks to doing so. But... There is a wealth of information on here an other places about how to do so safely. Your friend was careless. It happens to the best of use but it really shouldn't happen at all. If he was DIYing he should have known the risks and been more careful. A simple label would have been all that was needed.

A fellow vaper told the following story that happened to him the other day:

He decided to make his own liquids. He purchased 52 mg VG base on the internet, regular glycerine at the chemist to dilute it to the concentration he wants, and flavorings.

Why 52 mg you ask? Because nic juice is illegal here, so he reckoned it'd be less risky to import one highly concentrated bottle than several with a lower concentration - only one small illegal parcel, instead of a big one, or several in a row, and only one chance to get busted. Not sure his risk reduction strategy is correct, but that's what he thought.

When he made his 6 mg juice, he used a big syringe to transfer a little nic base, and another, totally identical syringe to transfer a lot of plain jane VG.

See where this is going?

Long story short, he made 40 mg juice, and ended up with a really bad case of sea sickness and a headache.

The first lesson is: be safe and don't buy high concentration nic base. If you mess up, you won't hurt yourself.
The second lesson is: prohibition is stupid, because it makes people take risks to get what they want illegally.

Absolute B.S!

Up until a year or so ago many online vendors routinely carried 36 mg juice.

F.Y.I 36mg juice is 3.6% nicotine in a suspension of pg/vg and flavorings.

Your friend mixed it at 4.2%

Ive handled 100mg nicotine even spilling it on my hand without the symptoms you described.

I think it was all in your friends head.

I'm very glad for you. Me, I've vaped 32 mg once, and after 10 minutes of vaping that juice the way I usually do at 12, I've felt sick and fidgety - very much like the effect I got when I smoked my first cigarette after months of quitting.

I wonder why some people fail to grasp the concept that their personal experience is not necessarily the norm...

I'm guessing that for someone used to 6mg juice vaping 42mg would be VERY harsh. How the hell did this person not notice?

Continuing to vape, even though the hits are suspiciously harsh, and the initial stupid mistake... this person probably shouldn't be doing DIY.
Or was drinking while doing it. Adding two sources of nausea and headache to the whole situation. DWDIY (drinking while---)

If anything -- and not to minimize his the outcome -- this only proves that one can not overnic themselves by just vaping without first getting a sign to stop, and if they don't heed that sign, generally the worst case scenario is akin to drinking two too many Red Bulls. A "really bad case of sea sickness and headache" can also be caused by, well, going on a cruise.

Then you are easily offended my friend :)

Look, the guy was shooting for 6 mg and ended up with 40 mg.

Well, if he didnt know how to mix without getting this numbers so far off.....he should have learned something about calculation, and get some info around what he planned to do! 100mg nic ainto noe trouble, if handled with care...but wihout understanding mixing calculationa, or how to use an online juicecalculato...then it could be making som bad stuff... Also similar as driving a car...should know where to go, and what stupid things who could happen when not!

I agree.... BUT, it wasn't that he didnt know how to use a mix calc, it was that he didnt know how to label his equipment properly.

Making the claim that we shouldn't be allowed to obtain higher concentrations of liquid-based nicotine because an inexperienced first-timer mixed up his/her syringes is equivalent to claiming that we should ban kitchen knives because a novice chef sliced his finger open.

Look, your friend made a mistake. Thus, your friend paid the price. If I confuse my salt and sugar shakers in the kitchen, I end up with salty tea or overly sweet eggs, and that is nobody's fault but mine.

There are plenty of warning labels on the bottles, plenty of stickied threads here at ECF, and plenty of youtube videos/google articles that allow first-timers to gain a relatively comprehensive understanding of DIY before even touching a syringe. Your friend simply didn't pay enough attention to his/her actions, and if you think that this life should be full of restrictions and limitations in order to prevent people like that from occasionally scraping their knees or drinking salty coffee, then I disagree with you deeply on a philosophical level.

I don't find your post offensive, but I find it ignorant and rash. You even contradict yourself by saying that A) limitations on nicotine acquisition cause potential harm, and B) we should limit nicotine acquisition. I think you should sort out your philosophy a bit more and think deeper as to what caused this problem and how it can be avoided/resolved in the future without negatively impacting thousands of responsible, keen individuals.

I was left wondering the same thing after reading your original post.

Perhaps you missed the math?

Have you stopped to consider that its your friend who is atypical or experiencing the placebo effect?

Alarmist threads like these do two things:

They spread fear and misinformation.

They give our enemies ammunition to use against us.

If I were your friend Id stick to buying premade juices from those who know what theyre doing.
