Too many for sure. Of course there will always be problematic units but this is more widespread IMO, reports on other forums, on the Smoant Facebook page, and on seller message boards too.

Anyone having one within warranty would benefit from giving it some continued and regular use IMO. Not seen any reports of the Ranker or Charon having problems.

Mine only started to go back when I reduced the screen brightness actually. IDK if that was the CAUSE but it sure seemed to be temporally related. My advice is, if your screen isn't doing anything, don't change the settings.

Anna
Thanks Anna.

Wonder how many of the folks with screen issues had custom wallpapers, etc as well. Just wondering, if the screen is being overdriven, then the colors/brightness the screen is displaying could affect the longevity of the screen possibly.

Maybe the screen quality isn't up to par and starts to go bad when it's pushed harder. Just looking for ways to prolong having the issue or to avoid it.

I did not change or upload any wallpaper and mine arrived June 20th, so it should have been one of the newer ones. IDK if dimming the brightness REVEALED the issue or whatnot, but I am not necessarily going to fool around with brightening it in case it gets worse, at least not until I hear back from Smoant. I'm like less than 10 days out of the warranty period so I hope they take pity on me. IDK.

If you want to bypass a screen all together, the iJoy Zenith 3 mod is gorgeous and takes 2 20700 batteries. I have one and love it.

www.myvaporstore.com/iJoy-Zenith-3-Mod-p/lim-znt20.htm

How's the temperature control on that?

If I recall, mine had a pretty bright screen, out of the box. I wonder if this is a combination of the screen brightness and duration of use at brighter settings? Maybe the screen starts to get stressed and go out?

Perhaps turning the brightness down on it will help screen life?

Like Anna, mine always go to the dimmest setting right out of the box.
I just turned it all the way up and it's more readable between the lines.

The Zenith is a VV only mod. No TC or other fancy features.

The type of screen failure doesn't sound like a software or firmware problem. The failure is in the screen, or, more likely, the surface ribbon connector from the screen to the board. Given the price point, it's a spot the screen supplier might have looked to save a few pennies or the supplier of the board cheaped out on the surface mount. Either way at the price point it's easier for Smoant to replace with whatever mod is in stock and not even attempt a repair.

Oh man... I've only got like 2 mm left.... is it REALLY gonna turn into nothing because (on the dimmest setting) it's totally legible. Should I turn it UP now? I mean, while I still can? Because I probably have an HOUR before it just goes all grainy.

F it. Smoant hasn't gotten back to me. I'm going back up to 100% Brightness and I'm going to see what happens. At least I will be Doing Something, as compared to NOT being able to DO anything.

This feels like my son's many fish funerals in the backyard. There were ribbon wrapped boxes. The flag flew at half mast. Deep holes were dug. Heartfelt prayers were stated, (or choked out between sobs). The "Mistress of Ceremonies" would invite those in attendance to like, share fond memories of the fish and its exploits. There was the dribble of dirt onto the box, the owner of the fish REALLY used to lose it then.... Finally, the grave mound was complete, the owner would either plant something on top (it was Tucson, so that usually died too) so eventually the Mistress of Ceremonies would like, suggest that a "fake plant" from the fishtank be used, instead.

The whole time, the Mistress of Ceremonies would be thinking to herself, "What a lot of Ado about nothing," while still feeling generalized sympathy and empathy for the owner, as the Mistress of Ceremony did feel that the toilet was a more exigent solution, only also realizing it was tasteless to suggest to the Fish owner (or even CREMATION honestly) and the Mistress of Ceremonies would finally usher the lugubrious fish owner back inside the house as he stated, "Mom, Alfredo was such a GOOD fish."

Well now, I kind of get it. LOL also look at the LENGTH of this post. I'm turning up my brightness IMMEDIATELY I mean what do I have to lose, death is PART of the cycle of LIFE clearly.

Even Smoant Cyons, sob.

Anna

Okay I turned it up.

I turned up the brightness, man, and the regular display looks FINE but the white clock still looks terrible. I still haven't heard back from Smoant, but I guess on the plus side, it's still vaping.

Yeah the fish... One time we lost an entire TANK to fish rot. That was not a good day. I'm not even going to get into my son's first dog dying, which thankfully occurred when he was not around.

That was a kid that attached to everything. EVERYTHING. I mean, he had pet slugs for a while....

When he left Tucson he was just in floods of tears, which was precious, although like, I sincerely appreciate his loving his parents, well I was also thinking the whole time, "Sheesh, kid, I love you too and it is my fervent prayer that you find a girlfriend who is fairly healthy in Colorado." LOL.

Okay I turned it up.

Don't flush it when/if it dies. Or at least take the batteries out before you do.

I haven't heard back so I did email that other smoant email place. It looks like turning up the brightness worked in the sense that the screen stopped getting worse. The regular display looks fine, actually but the clock still looks bad, but I still have a few MM left that's clear. IDK if the brightness thing halted the issue, but it's not quite dead yet.

LOL, It won't get flushed if it dies. The husband has been stockpiling dead electronics for so long, we may make a WHOLE 60 dollars when/if we move by selling it off as scrap, when/if we do that because I am certainly not allowing him to move the entire pile it's gigantic, hence the sixty whole dollars.

I hate to say it, (mainly because I'm worried if I do, it will die) but it seems turning up the brightness is at least appearing to fix/stop the degradation.

I still vape every Cylon vape as if it could be my last, but frankly, it's more enjoyable that way which is why I do it.

I have not heard back from Smoant (although I guess it's the weekend and all) but I doubt I will I mean I took pictures and sent receipts and whatnot, but I also noted that I was technically out of the warranty period (I mean, I assume they can count) and was just throwing myself on their tender mercies because it is a known problem, etc. I really doubt they'll do anything. But, I guess, like many things, I will have to wait and see.

I woke up with a headache. Swilling coffee.

If your'e out of warranty and they're not going to do anything they should at least give you the courtesy of a reply explaining that. Hopefully you'll be lucky and get a replacement.

The numbers of failures we're seeing would hopefully mean this issue will be treated differently than a simple warranty yes / no. They'll hopefully look at it the same way, unless they want to get a reputation for a smash and grab outfit, release a faulty product to the market then chalk up the failures to expired warranty. "Life expectancy 3 months" might be a great strap-line for a dragonfly, not for a mod manufacturer. The screens and / or circuitry are obviously crap.

LOL I got my smoant "offer" just now. Apparently FT is not an "authorized reseller" because they "always undercut us" and like, Smoant would like to offer me a video about how to replace the screen, and also 2 pieces of screen for 10 dollars.

Sigh. Has anyone replaced their screen? My thought is, "If it's going to go, it will GO already," and also, "ten dollars seems like a WHOLE LOT to me right now.

I might watch the video and see how much of a PITA it is, I guess....

It does sort of suck. I actually bought two, one from 3Fvape though. So, IDK.

I haven't watched the video yet, but I might ask them how on earth it "fixes" things because frankly that they offered me TWO screens (for 10 bucks, that just really bugs me, send them free!) It's not even the money just the "You can do all the work and also pay 10 bucks for shipping." And also, like I really would like to know why they'd be ominously sending me TWO of then, if this is a fix. It kind of makes me want to counter, "How about you send me 20, man, to keep me going for like a year at least?"

IDK almost yoga time, I mean if the Cylon goes I have a lovely Proteon that is just dying to be pressed into full time service, and has been for some time now. Etc.

Yeh, I've decided against the screen. Yoga was awesome but then I decided to shave my legs and the amount of BLOOD that ensued.... I can't be trusted with the screen. Maybe the husband can do it and it's a good thing I did yoga first because the amount of blood lost.... I've got to go do some investigation into "how to wax" safely because he is out purchasing 4th of July Subway Sandwiches and I like cleaned up around here and even clothed myself in something attractive, but the whole dripping blood thing just ruins it. I don't think the commentary is gonna be, "You look so lovely wife," more like "WTH did you do and did you drip blood on the couch?" I mean, it's so bad I'm thinking of just putting on my granny pajamas and hiding all the bloodshed and whatever.

It's probably a good thing the kid is calling, but I definitely cannot be trusted to replace that screen, and I'm going to call it "the principle of the thing, Smoant" instead of, "What are you HIGH Smoant you think I can delicately replace the screen without injuring the mod severely or almost worse, myself?"

On the plus side, it continues to work, so there's that.
LOL.

FWIW I did ask Smoant today if warranties would be honoured if buying from three specific sites:

3F Vape
Ali Express
Fast Tech

They replied saying no problem if you retain your purchase receipts. Of course that might not help if the item is out of warranty but at least they will honour warranties.

I'll see how the Charon performs with regards to holding up. Obviously the amber light is flashing for me after the Cylon experience, one which is not only a limited example. If there's ANY problem with the Charon the amber light will change to red.

That said, doubt I'll be buying any other mods unless they have a DNA chip so that would rule out Smoant anyway. Pleased to say the Paranormal 250 is performing superbly but we'll see in 6-12 months time. Battery life however is noticeably better as is hit performance with Replay. I was once of the view that unless you were a TC user the extra cost of DNA chips was maybe not worth it, not now.
