I couldn't agree more. Words are sooo two dimensional! :D I think this becomes a problem when the written or spoken word is taken for reality. Mythology uses the written word as a way to get people to see another dimension. It's like drawing in perspective on a sheet of paper; the third dimension isn't actually there, but it can be perceived from a two dimensional drawing. There is no other way to express this from words, which are linear and can only describe by way of comparison. What they are trying to express has no comparison, therefore, shouldn't be taken literally, IMO.

Yes, it's like how some get all up in arms about the various savior stories and their similarities through out time. Rather than get appalled over it (except I do understand the inherent betrayal sentiment concept involved), it would surely indicate that there is a 'timeless' truth involved that is trying to be conveyed. It's there. It's just that people can't accept it so it is hidden in symbolism.

Jesus said it so many times: "ye cannot bear it..." and also ... "if you will receive it..." i.e. what he is saying. Sometimes the mind just glosses over and what is said isn't comprehended (in it's fullness/beyond linear two dimensionality). Been there, done that!

I'm not religious, but I think these two quotes attributed to Buddha make a lot of sense:

“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.” -- Buddha.

"Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and common sense." -- Buddha

WWJV? ;)

I've been there too. I didn't like the decor though and the food was terrible! :D

LOL and now, perhaps, you have a different quandary, which Jesus expressed as the Son of Man having no where to lay his head... foxes have their dens, etc. Meaning, to me, that society at large didn't share the aware/enlightened consciousness that he had and is available to everyone.

Amen! Ohhh...ooops. :D

"Look under a rock and you will find me" - Jesus

I felt it just last week when my daughter was invited to a cookout at a local church. No one really said anything to me other than wanting my daughter to go to bible school, but I felt so uncomfortable. Wow, thanks for that realization. It actually helped me!

You're welcome!

There's a lot to be said for the various religions sharing their insights.

"The truth shall set you free." - Jesus

I guess there's something to be said for Jesus "saying" as well as something to be said for Buddha "not saying" as mentioned earlier.

I totally understand the discomfort you experienced.

Thanks for all the posts. I think I'm going to just let God come to me instead of looking for answers in doctrine.
That's really a great idea. IMO, God is above and beyond any story written. The story will often times get in the way if you are holding onto it as real. Stories are just stories about other's experiences.

One is more open if belief is let go. It does no good to try to grab the water when you're sinking. If you let go and relax, you'll float. ;)

I'm actually going to sign up for this Christian missionary convention in August - they go to Muslim countries to talk about Jesus. Sounds dangerous but apparently it isn't for this group - the majority are Koreans and it seems like the Muslim world has very little beef with asians. I probably won't go on a mission with them any time soon - but I heard from a friend that it is very educational and involves a lot of prayer. This is a huge step for me but I think it will be better than returning to the dogmatic Catholic masses (take it both ways :)) I'm used to.
