Tobacco Adapts to New Realities

Partial quote:
Traditional cigarettes were not the only topic addressed by the panel -- electronic cigarettes were identified as a "surprising" growth segment for chains such as 7-Eleven, which is conducting a 104-store test on a $29 starter kit and a $14.99 refill package, according to Kailey. "It's way too early to tell who exactly is buying these, but it looks like they are smokers looking for an alternative," he said.

Weiner applauded electronic cigarette manufacturers for countertop point-of-purchase vehicles that offer customers informative pamphlets and even "talking displays" that are operated by the push of a button. "One customer pushes it and four or five other people in the store hear about it," he said.

Perhaps someone can enlist the help of this Convenience Store News' annual tobacco Best Practices Roundtable to keep the e-cig etc around for us?

I thoroughly enjoyed this entire article on how convenience stores see the collapse of the cigarette market and the rise of what they call OTP (other tobacco products). That is exactly the route I took: Off cigs, started little cigars, quit little cigars, started snus usage, took up the pipe again, started daily use of Stonewall dissolvables, began e-smoking, more than two years ago.

These paragraphs struck me:

Retailers identified OTP products that were performing well in stores, which included:

-- Pipe tobacco
-- Star Scientific's reformulated Stonewall and Ariva products
-- Cigar wraps
-- Two- and three-count foil packs of cigars

Anyone who finds the e-cig "missing something" -- as I do -- would be wise to include other harm reduction alternatives in their daily routine. For more information on alternatives, see the Health section on ECF.
