I like your positive attitude dinky. Don't let this get you down..anymore than it already has. Your quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your body. Flood this guy with facts and don't let him intimidate you. If his patches were so effective, way more people would have quit long ago. You are the one quitting, not him. You tell him what works, not the other way around. He hasn't the foggiest idea what it's like unless he smokes too.
I'm "rooting" for you buddy. You CAN do this and you will. You have already started and that shows your determination. Keep us posted on how things go for you. Stay positive and don't let anything.....nothing.....get in your way. This win belongs to you Brother.

Dr. Dean says that part of the reason e-cigs work vs. the patch is that we, as smokers, are accustomed to getting our nicotine in lumps; One big wallop that fades away until we're ready for another big wallop. When you use the patch you get a slow, steady stream of weak nicotine (even the highest patch is 21mg, that's equal to 7 of my old cigarettes) that trickles through your blood stream all day. No wallop with that, and we aren't used to getting it that way.

When you combine that with the hand/mouth thing, it doesn't make sense that anyone can quit using the patch. Of course people do it every day.

People always said, "try this..." "try that..." "if you really want to quit, it'll work."

The problem is that I DIDN'T really want to quit! I used to say, "where's the cure for those of us who DON'T want to quit but have to quit for whatever reason?"

Anyone who studied Freud should know that!!! (not that I totally agree with his reasoning behind it, but all the same...) It is taught in general psychology...and ALL medical professionals have that course.....

Except...Freud's Psychosexual stages was completely discredited :p

Dinky, tell him he'd be more effective at his job if he had you go for a complete blood count (CBC) AND INCLUDED A WESTERN BLOT TEST FOR LYME DISEASE. It's rampant here in PA, and I now have Rheumatoid Arthritis due to having had it, untreated and undiagnosed, for 10 years, best estimate. Fatigue is such a broad and sweeping symptom of so many other things that vaping should be the least of his worries, fercrissakes.

My docs, both GP and my Rheumy, are over the moon about my vaping. I'm so sorry that he made you feel discouraged. (((hugs)))

Hang in there. Educating yourself is the best thing you can do for your health.

Doctors ain't rocket scientists.

Though the 18th century they drilled holes in people heads to cure migraines. The 19th century attaching leeches was all the rage to cure everything. Just 50 years ago 9 out of 10 doctors said that unfiltered Camel cigarettes were the best thing you could do for your health. (mild exaggeration)

Doctors have an informed viewpoint and it is important to get their opinion. However, with politics, money and societal pressure playing an increasing role the science has "gone out the window".

A doctor who remains current on everything that is related to the scope of his practice of medicine and is open to discussing treatments that would work for you, instead of treating a patient like a child, is invaluable.

In there defense, with the pressure on their time from the government, insurance companies and lawsuits, very few doctors have the time to stay current on cutting edge medicine or to actually care about their patients as individuals.

Keep trying and Best of luck to you!

This is a good point, often a specialist isn't going to know or have the time or opportunity to know (or even need to know in many cases) about these new-fangled contraptions.

Well, I can relate to you. My optholmologist wasn't thrilled about the PV, and tried to convince me that cold turkey was the best way to quit. HOWEVER, my cardiologist, who is older, and I believe wiser, said "Great!" when I told him I had switched to an e-cig. He just wanted to know if it was working for me.

So, some keep up with the times and understand the problems of addiction, and some don't. The eye doctor isn't going to deter me in any way, shape, or form.

Hope that helped a little.

My doc had no problem prescribing me medical ........., but he had a FIT about my e cig...go figure!! I understand that nicotine is poison, and it interferes with my nervous system, which is my disability...but hey, it's better than smoking to get my nic-fix. Once I told him I can wean down to 0 mg, he had a WAY different attitude about it and actually wanted to know more. I'll mail him those print outs. I think if we just talk to our doctors about it, we can educate them and maybe help others who walk through their office doors. Thanks for all the info.

As for what to tell my doctor: print out the ECF flyer and give it to them and then tell them that e-cigs have about an 80% PERMANENT cessation rate while "the patch" hovers near about 10%.

Out of curiosity, where did you get this statistic from? I like having statistics like this on hand for when ignorant people are critical of something they don't understand. Though, 80% does seem a bit high...

Nicotine addiction is no more a disability than a caffeine addiction is. Both substances are harmful in excess, and have similar effects on our bodies. The guilt over using nicotine is due to the Big Organizations' success in making us all believe that nic=cigarettes.

im really bummed out. i went to the dr today and he asked me how long i had been vaping. i told him proudly 2 months. he looked at me in horror and said 2 months!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! why didnt u just do the patch. ud be done by now and nicotine/tobacco free. is this the way it goes with drs? or was this just a really bad experience. i didnt even know what to say to him. i havent had a real cig in 1 1/2 months. i smoked 2 packs a day for 25 yrs. i thought hed be just a little supportive and he just thought i was nuts. has anyone else experienced any of this. what did u say. how do u handle drs. i was just at a loss for words.....

I'd say share the doctor's exact name and follow up with a direct complaint. See ama-assn.org for some details on this. It is the current medical opinion that ANYTHING beats smoking, which is how present day nicotine replacement products circumvent the need for long term testing. Anything beats smoking, not intended for long term use, so who cares.

It's one of those cases with any non oral NRP, it leaves one's hands free to continue to smoke. And while personal vaporizers are not presently and approved method to quit smoking, your doctor is under every moral and ethical obligation to collect ANY data you provide him. The big one is the simple fact that PVs represent a NRP that maintains the existing hand to mouth habit WITHOUT, and as such represents the easiest transition away from cigarettes.

It sounds like the bozo needs to be reminded that quiting smoking is a process, not an event, and if there is a process that works, it's his damned job to find out about it.

Wow... what a quack this doctor is. I'm betting that he is male and over the age of 40. I have this theory about men from my generation and their stubborn stupidity. It must have something to do with the way our fathers were / the way we were raised. I would have to agree that it is time to find a more open minded physician. Even if he was convinced that vaping was not the best for you. I would think that a well educated professional that understood the dangers of all of the nasty chemicals in analogs would have tried to motivate you to keep off the analogs and work in a plan to reduce your nic levels in your vaping. What happened to "do no harm" anyways. Hang in there and congrats on getting off the stinky sticks!

VAPIN' was here..... Where might he be next?
