Well the Jeep I've been looking at for months has disappointed me. Apparently a kid keyed all the cars in the poor guy's lot since the last time I looked at it. So my nearly pristine looking black Jeep now has scratches all over one side of it. We started it up for the first time today and it had some hesitation so we were thinking there might be a problem with the battery. Then we took it out for a test drive. I drove it around a parking lot. Turn radius is good. We learned that the #3 on the AC does not work. #1, #2, and #4 work great. The heat smells like burning solder but other than that it blasts heat well. It tracks strait when you take your hands off. Has disc, not ABS breaks. The muffler is starting to sound loud but nothing major. Has a coating of rust underneath but no holes. So then we ran a vin search. Its been in 4 accidents, 2 of which the airbags were deployed. The front bumper is hanging on by a thread. I think it's missing a bracket. The right rear view window doesn't adjust electrically. Theres a spot of bondo underneath the Jeep logo on the back hatch door. & the 4 wheel drive stick was nearly impossible to move into the 4wd gears. (I don't know what that suggests) Half of the back axle box was wet. I'm not sure what the liquid was. It has a check engine light but the guy says that he believes its a loose hose in the engine compartment and he will fix it when I purchase it. OH, and, when I parked it in the parking lot, the battery died and we had to ask someone to bring us back to the dealership. Its a 2005 Jeep Liberty Sport, trail rated. All this for just $6500!! :p We're going to offer him $4200 and we're going to hope to get it for less than 5300. Even in "Fair" condition with 120k miles a 2005 Jeep Liberty is worth 7,500. SO if I can get all this fixed, does anyone think this is a good deal, or should I be looking else ware? mehhhhh. I need a vehicle asap.

If the battery died when you parked the alternators prolly shot. Id avoid a that jeep like the pleg it sounds like its already starting to fall apart. Which liberties tend to do fast and hard. Id only buy a jeep if its 4.0 cherokee gotta remember its a chrysler/dodge

Well we checked the alternator when we got it back to the dealership with the battery probes and its got a good reading of around 14+ volts. The kid that got it started and brought it back to the shop spoke Spanish so I couldn't understand what he was saying but I think it had something to do with the starter. So theres a ton of stuff wrong with it but if I can get it for around $X amount of money then my mom is willing to pay X amount of money to get it all fixed up. But I mean, there are better deals out there. My brother is just the type of person that has no problem spending tons of money when he feels spending it is justified & purposeful, so he wants me to take a crack at getting it for X and spend $$ to fix it. Its like today he told me to print out the carfax report. I'm like I'm not printing that out, I just spent $30 on ink for this printer. (I make my money from auction sites) He laughed at me. He makes $30 in the time it takes him to ask an intern to heat up the coffee machine every morning lol.

You have to take the alternator out to properly test it. If you can get it cheap enough it could be worth it but for 4 grand you could have something with no problems thats more reliable. Guaranteed your gonna dump all that cash into it and still have more problems soon.

yeah I'd take that guarantee lol. Hes only offering me 1000 miles or 30 days. I think hes a pretty big crook. My oldest brother literally talks my mom out of every car she tells him about when they are from craigslist. He's very pro-dealer, wants me to get something with a warranty, something from 2005 or newer. He doesn't know much about cars and hes just happy that this one is from a dealer. He's the type that would push my mom into buying me a piece of crap from a dealer so he can say hes the guy that helped her find me a car. He'd ultimately like me and my mom to break down and agree with him that I should finance something for around 10k.

My other older brother talks my mom out of every car we look at from a dealership :p He likes craigslist. Hes worked as a mechanic. He's very pro-older cars with less computers. He would like to see me learn more about mechanics so I can fix my own things. So no matter what I've brought to my mom, she talks to my brothers and one of them says its not worth the price.

My mom has no idea what to look for. She's very marry a working guy and drive what he buys for you till it doesn't drive anymore. She just listens to whoever talks the loudest lol. My older sister is the opposite of all of them. She's very pro get plumes out of your house mom. Buy him the next car you look at make him get a job and kick him out. lol. & then there is me. I just want to be able to get into a 4 wheeled vehicle and drive away from this house when they are all pissing me off :p

Hey Perma, we did leave the headlights on for about 5 minutes when we parked on the test drive. Then the battery wouldn't start and this didn't respond to a jump from a small battery charger. Do you think 5 minutes of headlights should drain a battery enough to stop the starter from turning the car over or do you think it might be the starter/alternator? The solenoid clicked but there was no turnover and no puttering what so ever. So I'm not sure if I drained the battery with the headlights or if there may be a starter or alt problem.

My brother laughed at me for thinking it would be anything other than the battery because he knows I left the lights on. But 5 minutes? I have chilled in my mom's car with the lights and radio on for 15 minutes and it starts up fine. But I could see an older battery like the 1 in this jeep having a problem with 5 minutes of the headlights on without engine running.

the battery could be on its way out or the alternator not keeping a propper charge while driving.. could be either one or both honestly. A bad alternator can kill batteries. Its Deffinetally not the starter though.

Edit: You did say you tested it and it was at 14 volts so id assume its just the battery not holding a charge well anymore because if the alternator wasnt charging it would have been lower after driving it
