Animal Moms Who Just Need A Break

Somewhere in this thread, someone mentioned a solder smell when running their car heater. I'm sorry to have to tell you that might be a very expensive fix -- it's probably really old, rusty antifreeze leaking onto the heater core. Replacing the core can cost a couple of hundred, but worse, if the antifreeze is in that bad a shape, a quick flushing and refilling isn't going to help much. You might be looking at rebuilding the radiator core and having the engine pressure flushed by a professional (and I don't mean Jiffy Lube). Some years ago, a friend of mine ran up $2,000 in mechanics' bills getting his fixed properly.

The cat rules!

When the paint is dry, I have to touch up the wall above the baseboard and install the quarter-round. Then push the bed and nightstands back into place. Then move my desk and a bookcase and paint the baseboard behind them, touch up the wall, etc.
Started this project two months ago today! Might be finished by next week.

Well the Jeep I've been looking at for months has disappointed me. Apparently a kid keyed all the cars in the poor guy's lot since the last time I looked at it. So my nearly pristine looking black Jeep now has scratches all over one side of it. We started it up for the first time today and it had some hesitation so we were thinking there might be a problem with the battery. Then we took it out for a test drive. I drove it around a parking lot. Turn radius is good. We learned that the #3 on the AC does not work. #1, #2, and #4 work great. The heat smells like burning solder but other than that it blasts heat well. It tracks strait when you take your hands off. Has disc, not ABS breaks. The muffler is starting to sound loud but nothing major. Has a coating of rust underneath but no holes. So then we ran a vin search. Its been in 4 accidents, 2 of which the airbags were deployed. The front bumper is hanging on by a thread. I think it's missing a bracket. The right rear view window doesn't adjust electrically. Theres a spot of bondo underneath the Jeep logo on the back hatch door. & the 4 wheel drive stick was nearly impossible to move into the 4wd gears. (I don't know what that suggests) Half of the back axle box was wet. I'm not sure what the liquid was. It has a check engine light but the guy says that he believes its a loose hose in the engine compartment and he will fix it when I purchase it. OH, and, when I parked it in the parking lot, the battery died and we had to ask someone to bring us back to the dealership. Its a 2005 Jeep Liberty Sport, trail rated. All this for just $6500!! :p We're going to offer him $4200 and we're going to hope to get it for less than 5300. Even in "Fair" condition with 120k miles a 2005 Jeep Liberty is worth 7,500. SO if I can get all this fixed, does anyone think this is a good deal, or should I be looking else ware? mehhhhh. I need a vehicle asap.

lol that jeep ad is funny. I would take that one.

I just looked at another one today from a dealer. My older brother lives about 20 miles from our house, and he's about 5 minutes away from this dealership we went to today I found out. Didn't even have to take a highway. But my mom is so insistent about not being able to drive anywhere shes never been before, that we had to drive to his house, get into his car, and have him drive us the rest of the way. It has become apparent to me that I will not be able to buy a vehicle from an owner. Its become apparent to me that I will not be buying a vehicle if I do not go through my older brother, which means I must go through a dealer because he will not take me to see anything for sale by owner. My other brother that would be fine with me buying a car from an owner isn't in state.

So he took us to see this jeep and the jeep is in horrible condition. 2001. He doesn't like that its not 2005+ Its got scratches all over it. The back door has welding done. Its over 5 thousand dollars but it comes with a 2 year bumper to bumper warranty. Its not black or white like I wanted but I don't mind the color. Its got 156k on it which my brother cant even fathom. I tried to explain to him that jeep engines can last past 200k. He went crazy over the KellyBlueBook gas mileage and told me it'd ruin the environment and make me go broke. We opened the hood and he commented that he thought that some of the metal was shiny so that was a plus for him. The 4wd grinded in the rear when we tried to turn it and the steering wheel doesn't return to 0 axis when I took my hands off of it which I have no idea about. I'm guessing the grinding was the transmission & that the steering issue is with the power steering. Do 2001 jeeps even have power steering? I'll google it. & the AC needs to be "recharged" I guess.

But yeah, 2 years warranty does sound good especially since I dont even work so I have no problem with it being in the garage for a few days here and there. But these problems sound like big problems. 4WD gear problems or axle problems, and power steering are both pretty big problems for a jeep that isn't the color condition I want and for a jeep over my planned budget.

There is a beautiful jeep on craigslist by owner. It looks pristine body wise. But when I told my mom where it is she blew up "we'd have to get on X highway then merge onto Y highway, are you nuts?? I wont even drive on X highway what makes you think I'd drive on Y highway??" So that jeep is automatically out of the question for both of them.

Your brothers right depending on the engine 150k can be death to a jeep. Id keep looking presonally. In your price range you should be getting a clean straight bodied car with no issues. Even at a dealership.

And never count on a warranty. They love to find loopholes and allot of dealerships have horrible service departments anyway

Idk man I'm just looking for a Jeep at this point and I've been trolling craigslist and KBB like crazy and what I'm seeing is 3-4k for sale by owner and 4 to 6k for sale by dealer. The jeep that's too far away is 5k but it looks like its in pristine condition and its only got 86k miles. Jeeps before 2001 have the "famous" 4 liter inline 6, all the cylinders are all in a row. Its awesome. I see them on craigslist with 250k and even sometimes 300k all the time its crazy. I definitely believe if they were well maintained they will go far. Most used car dealerships have abused auction cars though -____- Idk I am going to try to get him to take a look at this one for sale by owner.

Maybe I should give up and start looking at cars. I'm probably going to complain about gas with the jeep considering I'll probably never make a dime over 140-160 a week if I can find a full time job. But damn I want a jeep Cherokee sport. I love their design.
