Hey all.

First and foremost, as per my stats, I am familiar with ECF and the generally positive vibe that flows through these forums. I used to enjoy scanning through the New Posts and helping as many new users as I could, but lately, it seems like I am the one that needs some guidance. This post is meant to search for optimism and hope in my vaping journey, just as everyone has had their own obstacles to overcome. (mods, this might deserve to be in the Health subforum, FYI.)

A little background info on me and vaping:

I smoked cigarettes (on average anywhere from 5 to 15 a day) for 5 and a half years. I quit on September 24th, 2013, so I have been vaping for a little over a year with no cigarettes - there is no appeal to ever have one again either. I started with cigalikes (My7s) around 18mg for a few months, moved on to an eVic and clearos (2-3 mL of 6-12mg a day), then to a DNA30 and some mechs (down to 3mg, normally use drippers on anywhere from .5 to .8 subohm builds and vape 3-6mL per day). I have been regularly dripping for about 2-3 months now. My Tobeco Kayfun has been giving me troubles recently so I have not set up a reliable tank in a while. I gave all my clearos and atty heads to coworkers who I have passed my vaping knowledge onto.

The predicament:

Recently, in the past 3 months or so, I have been experiencing reduced lung capacity. It has been growing persistently worse. Reduced lung capacity is really just a vague identifier, as I feel this could fall under "trouble breathing", "tight chest", and a few other obscure derogatory monikers. I am 24 years old, weigh 170 lb., am in good health (presumably), go to the gym twice a week, and play an hour of indoor soccer once a week. My occupational life is sedentary, but otherwise, I am very active - eating well and getting plenty of rest. Hydration-wise, I drink around 120oz of water a day. In light of my healthier aspects in life, I feel as if I am the only vaper experiencing this problem since these forums are normally focused on the positives aspects of vaping. And before anyone gets the wrong idea, I am all about the so-far scientifically-proven positive aspects. I still defend vaping against any naysayers even though it tears me apart that I am experiencing this problem.

Isolating the problem:

When it first started, I thought that since I was experiencing some uncomfortability, I should look into isolating the problem so I could eliminate it from the equation. The very first thing I looked into was VG and PG. Normally, we hear that certain vapers have a PG sensitivity/allergy and switch to a higher VG to ease their problems. I've never vaped any juice over 60/40 PG heavy, as I am not really into the throat hit attribute. I decided to switch from 50/50 to 70/30 VG heavy which definitely seemed to reduce the throat hit, but also tended to be a little heavier on my lungs. I wasn't experiencing allergic or flu-like symptoms, but my breathing felt a little heavier (especially if dripping). I decided that my body and vaping experience was more in favor of VG than PG, so I stuck with the higher VG blends.

I then looked into the amount of nicotine in the juice (at the time, 6mg on a 1.0ohm Kayfun). I decided to drop from 6mg to 3mg, which was a good decision, but I still felt as if my breathing was still labored. In contrast, this problem coincided with my interest in mech mods and RDAs, where I was going through 5-8mL a day just because they chug juice so much faster due to the higher wattage. The low(er) nicotine levels lead me to believe that I was not experiencing a nicotine OD, since scientifically it didn't compute. I decided to stay on 3mg since it is the most available nic level that is closest to 0mg (and I still want a little buzz, don't we all?). I am 99.9% sure that nicotine is not the culprit.

Although a very small factor, I have been avoiding any driptips or atomizers that are made of copper or brass, just as a precautionary measure.

At this point in time, our community (in conjunction with Dr. Farsalinos) was now hearing more and more about Diacetyl testing and how juice companies were ignorant to the fact that their juices contained Diacetyl, and it's substitutes, AP and Acetoin. Although there has been a ton of scaremongering on this subject lately, I believe that ecigarettes and vaping can absolutely be categorized as harm reduction, and it is 100% okay to want to reduce as much potential harm to your body as possible. Some disagree and say "it can't be half as bad as the 3000 chemicals in an analog", and, while I agree, I still would like to try my best at concocting a safer and healthier vaping plan. Now I don't believe I am actually developing "popcorn workers lung" (Bronchiolitis Obliterans) from vaping the flavoring Diacetyl, but after reading what the symptoms are, I feel as if my problem shares some similarities with it, such as reduced lung capacity. Also, desserts flavors have always been my go to, which is where Diacetyl plays a main role. I have recently been trying to buy from vendors who have had their juices lab-tested (a bit extreme, strokes/folks) so I can eliminate yet another variable out of my dilemma. It seems as in FlavorArt and some other flavor manufacturers are beginning to create 100% diketone-free flavors to fight this problem (this is great for our community's future, btw).

Where I sit now:

This very moment, I'm quite torn since something I used to love is now starting to become a burden. I want to figure out what is wrong and get back to where I was a few months ago. I'm sick of trying to go to sleep when I feel as if I can't breathe normally because my lungs feel heavy. I plan on visiting the doctor by the end of the month, but already know what they're going to say - that vaping is the same as smoking and the results are still unknown.

I really don't even know what I planned to accomplish in posting this; I guess I just wanted to get my feelings out there since ECF is a great source of feedback, guidance, and assistance.

I'll be glad to answer any questions anyone has.

Do you draw directly I to the lungs? That will cause heavy lung symptoms if over done.
I find VAPING like you smoke a cigar or pipe to be best
Puff 2 or 3 times... Then draw one into the mouth before breaking into the lungs.

Flavors have something to do with it too. I love my mango, but a little goes a long way, and it will cause issues. Lime does not.

That's a presumption on too many levels. Any MD who would dismiss a labored breathing complaint, blame vaping, and not even perform a basic chest X-ray is an MD probably not worth seeing. The truth is neither you nor anyone here can tell you is this is a vaping issue or a genuine medical complaint, and I personally don't feel comfortable playing a game of "what if" until you get a basic medical checkup with a professional putting a stethoscope into play. If it's bothering you enough that it interferes with your ability to sleep someone needs to actually see you.

In the past 2 months, I have been dripping subohm, so larger amounts of vapor have been drawn directly to my lung. I recently have cut back on the deep hits and just been exhaling through my nose.


I got away from the high VG liquids because i was getting a heavy feeling in my lungs ..no regrets

I'm afraid I am going to have to go back to 50/50 and see how it affects me. I just know that the higher the PG, the more allergy-like symptoms like a stuffy/runny nose, congestion, etc.

Absolutely agree. I can get to sleep, yes, but if I have a few vapes an hour or so before, it definitely hinders my ability to just doze off. I need to focus on my breathing patterns and try to calm down. As I said, I will feel more comfortable after a visit with the doc.

You might try ruling out an allergy, by vaping unflavoured 100%PG for a couple of days, then unflavoured 100% VG for a couple more. If one is good and one is bad, then that could be your answer. If both are good, then synthetic flavours could be the problem.

I've been meaning to do this. I had a 60mL bottle of both 100% 0mg PG and VG, and whilst in my "vape toolbox", their caps came out and leaked all combined 120mL all over everything. Wasn't too happy about that.

Besides seeing your doctor the best thing you can do is to quit vaping for a month or two. It looks like you are in really low nicotine intake now so probable you can do it. If not, you can try to vape 24 mg unflavored juice with something like iclear 16 (tight draw, really easy on juice consumption) and vape as little as you can. I think it could be a good test to see if vaping is a problem.

P.S. I am feeling really foolish giving advice on something I’ve never done myself, but nevertheless…

My experience with PG and VG has been that 70% PG irritates my throat enough to make it sore and 90% VG vaped at cloud chasing volumes gives me a slightly 'heavy' chest. That's just me and I've read of many other experiences both good and bad over the years I've been vaping. My normal ADV is 60%VG in a Reo Grand (mech mod) with a dual coil dripper on it at around 0.4 ohms. I typically vape around 6 ml a day but I have occasionally vaped as much as 20 ml a day with no issues.

'Reduced lung capacity' can mean a lot of things and can be caused by a lot of different things. For me it means when I get on my bike and do my typical ride I have to breath harder at the same watt output than yesterday. I find that feeling off somehow at the beginning of a ride, like if my chest feels a bit tight or heavy, is rarely indicative of my cardiovascular performance that day. So for me (and I know a lot of other people for which this is also true) quantifying my physical performance is critical in order to understand it.

I really don't think nicotine is an issue here as long as you do not notice any circulatory symptoms from it. IMO diacetyl and its variants will not be an issue because you have not been vaping long enough.

I would try my best to isolate any PG, VG or flavorant issues as best I could. You have already done some work on this but a more aggressive approach could help. If I were in your position and thought I had this problem I would also get myself to a doctor real soon and get his/her help in figuring things out. You could, god forbid, have a serious problem that has nothing to do with vaping. Or, as I prefer to believe, you are simply sensitive to something in your vape and you just haven't figured out what it is yet.

Honestly, I've noticed too that VG heavy juices make me have a slightly harder time breathing than pg. If I heavily vape 0% pg all vg, flavor, and nic then I get issues breathing similar (albeit far reduced comparatively) to those experienced in a steamroom or a place with very heavy humidity. Fortunately I live in Vegas, so the natural dryness works to my advantage, but in places with higher humidity it would probably be harder to dry those lungs back out. I (lacking medical degree and only working off a relatively fair understanding of human anatomy in a mechanical sense) would postulate that the internal structure of your lungs is being permeated with a far more humid atmosphere than they are used to. Your mind thinks its in Penn state, your lungs think they're in Florida..

Oh....and if you aren't having the PG allergy symptoms I wouldn't worry too much about vaping PG heavy juice. from google "Common PG allergy symptoms include: sore throat; pungent smelling urine; and muscular pain. Propylene glycol acts as a humectant – in other words, it sucks up moisture, which might explain the dry throat symptoms in certain people." So yah...back to the PG for you, see if it improves, and meanwhile try to see your doc. Finding your ideal mix for your body and geographical location is part of the journey.

I vote for the VG contributing to the heavy lung feeling. PG can irritate and anything besides air that you breathe is going to have an impact on our lungs. My goal was to transition off cigarettes and I found that vaping was a total replacement, not just a quitting method.

My doctor spends a minute or two with a stethoscope moving from place all around while I breathe and says my lungs are fine. When I vape VG I eventually get the heavy lung feeling. Going back to 80/20 pg/vg stops most of that, but pg and vg vapors are denser than air and we can expect some coating to occur.

I've noticed my windshield needs frequent cleaning inside and the film is noticeable in bright light. I think it's from vaping in the vehicle. If it's on the windshield, it's on our lungs, IMO. I've turned my vaping level back down from 10 watts to 6 watts and it seems to be much better.

I vape only ahlusion juice anymore and I know they have no diacetyl in their juices. when I didn't know any better I was vaping mt baker and ec blend and their pg was bothering me, and I couldn't enjoy their juices at all. not all pg and vg is the same. good luck

I appreciate the input from everyone very much.

I agree with the common consensus that VG is at least partially to blame here (especially in conjunction with subohm dripping). The only thing that sticks out to me is the inconsistency with these ratios. For example, within the past 2 months, I finished two 120mLs of "Must Vape" juices. Both of their ratios were 65VG/35PG, which isn't overly-VG heavy. I then moved on to Space Jam Venus, which I do not know the ratio, but I can tell you it is definitely 50/50 or heavier in PG; the throat hit and flavor was too intense for me. I still experienced this heavy chest whilst vaping these flavors, which weren't really VG heavy at all.

Something interesting to point out is that I really only notice it during sedentation; in other words, when I am sitting or not doing anything. When I am basically sprinting for 50 minutes straight at soccer, my breathing isn't labored at all. I feel absolutely fine. If I were to leave that soccer game and have 4-5 draws on my vape, I would then experience some difficulty breathing.

I'm going to schedule a doctor's appointment tomorrow, and I plan on still responding to comments, but will eventually update this thread with what the doc says. (Times like these, I wish there was an actual Vaping Doctor).
