So today the entire company gets an e-mail stating that e cigs / vaping banned from the work place. The reasoning is that it creates vapor and people may be allergic. My market manager didn't like the idea of it a month or so ago. I just find it amusing that now we get an HR revision specifically for e cigs and vaping a month later. I was the first in this market I know BC my MM had no idea what it was. So now I have a decision to make, I can work for a local vape store and make less money or stick with a job that isn't entirely satisfying. Ideas, comments, or ramblings on the subject welcome..

I won't give you career advice, but I will share a similar story. My lady works for a company that processes all the Family Medical Leave Act, Short/Long Term Disability, and Workers Comp claims for a major corporation. She just got a memo banning the use of electronic cigarettes within the work place. Seems a lot of companies are starting to go this route. Me, I work in a steel factory and vape happily at the shear that I operate. I would love to see them try to ban vaping as about 1/3 of the work force chews tobacco. The hell I would raise would be epic.

One my current job we can't smoke anywhere on the grounds . . people have to go smoke in thier cars. I'm not even going to ask about vaping - I'm sure it's not allowed. I am pretty much stuck in a small conference room all day with 10 others . .we even go to lunch together at the company cafeteria so I am pretty much on lock-down.

Even so - I vape on bathroom breaks :). They must think I have a really weak bladder, lol.

Me, I would just go outside and take vape breaks with the smokers. Where I work, they banned smoking on the entire property. You cant even sit in your car and smoke if its on the property. So most people get in their cars and drive to the end of the property to smoke. Lucky for me I started vaping and dont have any of my managers on site and have an office all to myself so no one gives me any grief about it.

What is the upward mobility at the vape store? How about a chance to move up at work now? Do what makes you happy. Don't complain when you have no money and all your friends are moving up the ladder. I was a bartender for several years when i was your age. I know the deal...

Promotability chance at current very good. I jst hate working somewhere just based on money.

Thats just it I dont vap near anyone I go in a breakroom which people dont use.

that's why i only do it discreetly at work, out of sight of other co-workers. e-cigs aren't addressed in our handbook, so the first time someone says something, i can just plead ignorance, and step up my stealth accordingly

I work from home (yay!) but I'm currently attending college, and I recently asked for clarification of the school's stance on ecigs (it's a completely smoke-free campus, but there is nothing in the official policy on ecigs). I was told that the official stance is that they're not allowed on campus, but if I use it outside they won't enforce it. They really just want to keep people from vaping in the classroom.

We have security guards that roll around in golf carts, and I just avoid using it right in front of them, because I just don't want the hassle of them thinking it's a cig when they see it from a distance, and I haven't been questioned yet. In fact, one of my professors chain smokes (programming + chain smoking just go together for some of us lol) and when he saw me vaping he was extremely interested in my eRoll. :)

Could always get a mini-ego, some supershorty cartos, and flavorless juice for the occasional stealth puff or bathroom break.

I stealthed behind the wheel at my last job (drove a small, cutaway bus for the elderly and disabled). Of course I would vape openly in the dispatch office, so they knew what I was doing. I wasn't explicitly blessed to do it but I'm sure they were fine with me not calling for frequent cigarette breaks while out and about. Bus drivers as a whole tend to smoke.

I stealth in class, too. My instructors know what it is. Hell, according to my computer class instructor, there's several faculty members who vape now. But we don't have a smoking ban on campus, just in certain areas. Particularly the second story balcony between the math & science building and health sciences building, but it's my understanding that that's because cigarette butts were being dropped on persons walking below.

In any case if I were asked to stop, I would. I can go an hour without. There's no policy on it now, so I'll have a puff or two discretely.

Haha.

I worked for the same company for over 31 years. Just for the money. I only hated it for 30 1/2 years.

So far they've paid me every month for 12 years NOT to work there anymore. (I'm retired.) and I never have to see them again. Yay!! It was all just for the money. Today i can do whatever I love. I won & they lost!

Your friend,

I'm a delivery driver and there is three of us that vape and we're not allowed to smoke on deliveries but nothing stated about vaping so if our area manager ever sees any of us we can just plead ignorance. Nobody at the store actually cares so long as we don't do it in the main area in front of customers. I figure better to keep it stealthy than risk being told no.

I don't vape at work. There is no policy against it, but there are a lot of people in a small area and it seems rude. It's not a big deal for me to wait for a break and step outside and relax, the same as I did when smoking. If I really need a vape and can't take a moment to go outside for some reason, I will quickly take a few puffs in the bathroom or somewhere else where I am totally alone. If this is an issue for you, I would consider whether money or happiness is more important at this time in your life. If it's money, keep your job and step outside when you can. If it's happiness, quit. Good luck!

It shouldn't be ONLY for the money but also shouldn't IGNORE the money. Where do you want to be in 10 years? Where is the best place to be now that puts you on that path?

If one of your criteria for where you want to be in 10 years includes getting a nic break at least once every hour or two, and if you live someplace cold where you need it to be indoors or you're stuck indoors (phone, meetings, machine, whatver) then that can be a factor too. But ONE factor -- other factors include money (self-sufficiency, ability to help others), career satisfaction (I need to solve problems and I'm an introvert, so I do programming, not sales), feeling of contributing to the world (working for an oil company vs a windmill company ,etc) -- you need to look at the whole picture, the put your foot on the right path.

Try to find someone who already has the job you want in 10 years and take them to lunch and ask them how they got there. If you can't afford to take them to lunch, stick with the money for now, you can't afford to take a cut. :(

I am lucky enough to be an a small office with one other person, he smokes analogs too... Even though he is cool with me vaping, I still do it stealthy, as we get random visits from other departments and staff. I like to keep it on the DL, no crime in it as I see it. I imagine if I brought my eGo Twist in and chainvaped all day, there would surely be a problem. Currently I use the tiny V2 batt with a liquimax for some discrete pulls and hold it till it is barely noticable on exhale. Get a nic fix all day that way. :)
