My brother walked in the house today and saw me vaping happily away. He stopped and looked at me, before saying something along the lines of "Put that down and just smoke normal cigarettes, mate - they're linked to Cholera". Cholera? Where did that come from? Unfortunately these remarks are becoming a common occurrence for me: two or three of my social group have also stated that e-cigs are unhealthily and almost as bad for you as smoking.
I sometimes have to really resist the urge to laugh in their face and argue but I'm not one for confrontation, so I just say "Oh right" and retreat into a state of nonchalant shrugging. However it's hardly surprising. A lot of people (including governments) are losing out to the E Cigarette revolution (taxes aren't nearly as high as cigarettes, just the standard VAT) and seeing as, by myself, I paid around £2,500 of tax annually on cigarettes ALONE - this is quite a big slice of revenue smokers are ceasing to provide. Plus, Big Tobacco has it's own motivations.
The poorly constructed and misunderstood FDA report only exacerbates things since the media has started referring to the fairly primitive report in articles and news programmes and the effect is made worse by the interpretation of the general population. A sort of Chinese Whispers game seems to be advancing - reports get twisted and mixed, changed and distorted when people discuss the topic among themselves.
It's just ever-so frustrating to me and I'm sure the majority of the vaping community.
The biggest sign to me that the views and understanding of the masses are distorted is the fact that now some people seem to believe that smoking is the healthier alternative to vaping. Uhm. What the heck?
