My brother walked in the house today and saw me vaping happily away. He stopped and looked at me, before saying something along the lines of "Put that down and just smoke normal cigarettes, mate - they're linked to Cholera". Cholera? Where did that come from? Unfortunately these remarks are becoming a common occurrence for me: two or three of my social group have also stated that e-cigs are unhealthily and almost as bad for you as smoking.

I sometimes have to really resist the urge to laugh in their face and argue but I'm not one for confrontation, so I just say "Oh right" and retreat into a state of nonchalant shrugging. However it's hardly surprising. A lot of people (including governments) are losing out to the E Cigarette revolution (taxes aren't nearly as high as cigarettes, just the standard VAT) and seeing as, by myself, I paid around £2,500 of tax annually on cigarettes ALONE - this is quite a big slice of revenue smokers are ceasing to provide. Plus, Big Tobacco has it's own motivations.

The poorly constructed and misunderstood FDA report only exacerbates things since the media has started referring to the fairly primitive report in articles and news programmes and the effect is made worse by the interpretation of the general population. A sort of Chinese Whispers game seems to be advancing - reports get twisted and mixed, changed and distorted when people discuss the topic among themselves.

It's just ever-so frustrating to me and I'm sure the majority of the vaping community.

The biggest sign to me that the views and understanding of the masses are distorted is the fact that now some people seem to believe that smoking is the healthier alternative to vaping. Uhm. What the heck?

Yes, aggressive ignorance is rampant everywhere. I was in a store, like a general dollar store, and they had a sign that said e cigarettes sold here. I asked the manager where they were because I was curious about what brand they were. He said, "Well, you couldn't get me to touch those. I heard they have much worse chemicals in them than regular cigarettes!"

I tried to talk to him about it a bit, but he had no interest in listening at all. He knows what he knows, and that is that.

It happens way too often. Misinformation. My Hubby says to me, "I heard blah blah blah evil child killing blowing up face device." Well I always have an intelligent comeback thanks to all you ECF'ers. He is a smart guy, He is all for it to start with. He is so happy I am not smoking. As am I.:)

And Cholera? Actually eating and drinking leads to cholera. Lets stop doing that?

Cholera? You know what I'm worried about getting from them? Cooties! Now those things can kill you.

Cholera's not just water-borne, contaminated food can give it to you as well. However, nobody's ever found the bacteria in e-liquid and doing so would be, at best, unlikely. PG's an antibacterial.

Yep, right back into the lap of big tobacco... And you don't have to look too hard to see who's responsible for that -- big money, propaganda and politics. And you can trace some of the lobbying money directly back to Big Tobacco. Some European and American politicians should be tarred, feathered and hung from our city lamp posts.

The media wouldn't be the media if it took the boring parts of the FDA report as "news." Nope the media like to sensationalize things so that they get more readership/viewership. So the take the "might prove to be dangerous" part and blow it up into the BIG STORY. I guess at least they finally did that with cigs, too, after a few decades of silence.

You sound like a very spoken young man that would be able to give these people a good lesson without coming across in a spiteful manner. I realize at times it can be difficult, but educate yourself and use some of that wit that you have!

Wow, cholera! Next it will be the Black Death...

... still waiting to see an article about how a vaper was spotted in the streets of Guinea just before the recent ebola outbreak...

... on the other hand... you're not supposed to inhale the vapor with your... (in fear of censoring)... rear end.

Isn't this how urban legends get started? Some ignorant (ignorance is not stupidity BTW) fool gets a hairbrained idea and before you know it, there is a reality show searching for the aliens that brought the technology for vaping to the earth. Sounds absurd when you put it like that huh? That is how the media likes to spin it anyway! I saw a segment the other morning about kids dying from drinking e-juice. What they failed to mention is that if a child eats a cigarette, the same thing can happen. Lord knows we don't want the public to know that one. Do we?

Actually I'm in favor of bringing back the guillotine. Vive la revolution! :D
