i had a couple things i noticed when i started vaping, and wanted to share them. If others chime in with stuff they notice and ways to compensate or fix these mistakes perhaps we can get this a sticky and help some new people out!

Biggest thing i have noticed is when going from normal cigarettes to vaping is how much i vape. what i mean is when you smoke a analog(regular cigarette) you tend to over smoke your PV(personal vaporizer). This happens because your used to taking 10+ puffs off your analog and eventually it burns down and you put it out. This dioes not happen with PV's. it will smoke until you reach the cutoff or the battery dies. As such you can go through a full cartomizer/ tank(the thing that holds the e-juice) in not time. Possibly even before the battery dies depending on what your using for a PV. I know for the RN-4081(smoking everywhere style, super mini...it has many names) the very general rune of thumb is your cartomizer will last about as long as the battery before it needs refilling, or topping off.

BUT..(there is always a but!)
when you switch from analogs to a PV ...in my humble opinion you should not worry about how much you vape, for the first month. This is so your mind and body can transition from analogs to a PV. Smoking analogs is not only a chemical addiction(the nicotine) but a behavioral habit. Your mind and body are used to lighting the cigarette then smoking it until your eyes get the visual cue of the cigarette being burned down. To help with this i cleaned out an ash tray and rested my PV(i use a rn4081) in the ash tray. again another mental cue for smoking. The reason for this was because how many analogs did you set in the ash tray and forget and then they burned to the filter? i will bet it was alot. doing this can help you slow your vaping.

now i want to add this, but i must emphasize a PV is not really designed to get you to quit, that part you must do on your own. here is how i got myself to quit, totally off analogs and a PV a couple years ago. Quitting is a personal choice i am only offering this as a method to help you do that. This is how i quit totally a couple years back. I only returned to analogs when i was severely injured and shortly after my wife left me and my entire life went to crap. I am following this course again so that i may quit nicotine again completely.

first month:
use your PV all you want as much as you want. this is the transition period so you and your brain can get used to a pv and enjoy all its wonders. I started with 16 or 18mg E liquid(it depended on where i got it and what was available)
Second month
pay closer attention to how much you vape and continue vaping as much as you like, were just building awareness of your habits with the PV this month. at this point i was using 12 mg or less. I also bought a bottle of 0 mg juice and mixed with the left overs of my 16mg bottles and came out with ROUGHLY 8mg juice(5ml of 18mg mixed with 5ml of 0 mg will net you roughly an 8mg solution) when i ran out of the 12 mg i swapped out for my 8mg mix
third month
I continued smoking the 8mg all month and did my best to slow my vaping when possible. I know if you vape 8mg but smoke twice as much it wont benefit you. This is the phase where you need to establish some self control and self monitor.
(you can go as long as you need in this phase of quitting, should that be your goal)
Fourth Month
This was my quit month. I smoked my 8mg till i ran out. I has pre-purchased some 8mg and some 0mg juice and again, mixed it together to get something in the neighborhood of 4mg. To do this you need to have enough juice so you have approximately a one month supply of some combination of 8mg 4mg and 0. Let me explain... the first week or so i was using up the leftovers of last months 8mg. the second week or so i was using the Approximately 4mg juice i mixed. the final week i began vaping the 0mg. now the timing may differ if you vape less or more but that is the general idea. You can continue vaping the 4mg/ omg as long as nessecary until you are ready to half the nicotine again or quit completely.

it was around this time i noticed something happening to my behaviors. i was forgetting my PV in the car, at home, at work, in my jacket etc... Shortly after i sat down with my wife and said hey you think im ready? she said yes and i put the PV in the drawer for about a week. I still had cravings for cigarettes for almost a YEAR after quitting. Seriously the random urge is a mental thing and a tough one to beat. You will notice times driving, after eating etc...where you reach for your PV or pack of analogs and your brain hits a speed bump and thinks "oh wait they're not there, i quit doing that" this is pretty normal and your not going crazy. if your married, have a gf, bf etc just make a joke of it and say "hey you mind if i stop and buy a pack of smokes?" their reply should be something along the lines of "not if you want to kiss me" or "no i don't want you to" something but keep it humorous. the reason for the laugh is it causes your mind to shift gears giving you a moment of pause.

so anyways theres my tips for new people. I hope it helps!

please if you have any comments or anything to add feel free! lets create a thread here new members can reference and learn about all the things they're going to encounter(in a general sense).

happy vaping!@:toast:@

ive never thought of over vaping, i vape for the pleasure of it... i know when i quit smoking and went to a PV i tried to only vape when i got a nic craving and once those stopped i vape for pure pleasure, if your goal is to quit vaping and smoking by all means set yourself on a loose schedule to get yourself off the habit all together but i vape all day every day... me and my wife killed 60 ml last week alone and are already through 30 ml of the next batch (approx)

One thing most new vapers need to think about is their form of vaping, i watch countless people vaping like they are sucking through a hose with a very small hole in the end...

Vaping is like BBQ

LOW AND SLOW take your hits long and slow and dont suck like your trying to clear a blockage!

Not having a Spare battery and atty's are mistakes I made early on too. Also a spare charger and ways to charge it in a car. Cleaning of your attys and battery contacts are other mistakes made. I also fried a battery early on because I wanted the TH and used higher voltage than I should so I exceeded the batteries current limit and fried the controller in a battery.

Some very good advice here. For me, I started with and I stocked too much 24mg juice at the beginning. My tastes changed and I needed lower nic levels at about 2 months. Then it was a scramble to get lower nic juices and even some 0mg juices to cut the ones I already had. I had to resort to pure VG from walmart to cut the nic for a couple of weeks. Its good advice to get some lower nic juices early on...you will likely need them at some point.

I agree with Grimwald that new vapers should get a couple of different nic levels to start with. I will also add that they should try something other than the traditional tobacco flavor that they are used to smoking.

When I first started I was smoking Marlboro Lights and I was pig-headed and went against the advice of the vendor to try a candy or fruit flavor. The taste was less than good, to say the least. Now I'm not saying that there aren't some very good tobacco flavors that are available to vape...because I have found a couple that I really enjoy. But the crappy M-Type that I got in my first eGo cartridges was not one of them.

So when I'm giving my two e-cig starter kits for Christmas, I will be including a real cigarette type flavor since that was what was asked for. But I will also be including some 555 and some Virginia Flue Cured tobaccos. And I will also throw in some Butterscotch and Caramel Apple flavors to get them to think outside of the box.

I have not analyzed it quite so much. lol. Although I've been vaping for, going on 3 years now, I pretty much vape similarly to how I smoked. sometimes more than others but,,, the one thing I have noticed is that sometimes I go for quite a long time without vaping at all, I'm talking maybe 2-3 days, so, in conclusion I guess I have almost "kicked the habit" so now I just vape when I want to cuz I enjoy it,,,If that all makes any sense,,,

Do whatever works for YOU. Nobody will be able to tell you how much to vape, what mg nic to use, which PV is the right one, if unicorn pi** is the best liquid, or when you should stop. Some people use it to quit, some people enjoy the hobby, some people smoke and vape together. Keep visual cues around if it helps, or blow all of your ashtrays to smithereens with a 12-gauge. In the end, you are (and should be) the only one to make the correct decisions based on YOUR life and how you choose to live it.

The biggest mistake I made at first was not having back up for the device, atty and making sure to have enough juice around.

^This!!!!! 150% this!

When i first started vaping i only bought like 2 10ml bottles...lol. Went through that in like 4 days and had to go to the kiosk in the mall to get some overpriced ejuice to satisfy me until my order came in haha.

Now i usually just buy 20/30/50+ml bottles unless im trying out a juice or i find some amazing deal(usually on china juices like 10 bucks for 50ml)

Another tip!- ALWAYS read reviews on juices/pv's before buying. To each their own but read what each review ACTUALLY says, if it tastes like something bad or is faulty with most reviews than I usually don't buy it.
I made the mistake of not reading them at first and ended up buying a few chinese pv's that were really pieces of junk. With juices it's more of personal taste but sometimes i read reviews to see if any of them are really worth buying, 1 bad review out of 50 isn't bad but when its like 35/50 reviews that say negative I will not buy it. All depends on the ratio of yes/no when reading reviews for me.

:p

also, as the above post stated, steeping (letting liquid sit after opened) is very helpful if you can do it. Minimum of a week for me if i have enough liquid to last me until then. Helps bring out the flavor and let all the juice settle in and mix together properly. Especially with fruity juices, i find that these have some insanely bad after taste SOMETIMES when i do not let them sit/steep for at least a few days-week.

Have you tried putting your mixed bottle in hot water for a few minutes then shaking it up? I read about this in another post and I tried it out with just hot tap water and a mug. Seemed to work well and speed up the process a little bit ;) There's fancier ways of doing this with glass containers, a pan of water, and a stove but I haven't got that far yet.

I want a bottle of Unicorn wee :( Is it rainbow colored :D ? On a more adult note: good post. That is what sets vaping appart from other nicotine replacements a person can tailor it for their own personal needs.

My biggest mistake was thinking a cartomizer was equall to a pack of smokes. Thank goodness this forum cleared that up for me ;) Not only was I going through them like crazy, but melting the suckers down trying to get more out of them.

Have you tried boiling your used cartomizer's and reusing them yet?
