I have a slightly different scenario to propose:

For those of you with teenage kids; what will you do if they take in interest in vaping?

Would you let them vape?

at what age?

What if they're already smoking?

I have no kids, let alone teenage kids, but am just curious how you all would handle that?

Those are more questions to be debated for sure. I'm looking that far forward now with kids so young to try and make that right decision that we parents strive for every day.

My eldest has no interest in vaping. She thinks she is fine now so why would she need to vape? Some kids at her high school she has seen after school with them. In a weeks time she said they no longer have one. So it looks like the fad came and went through her school.

At 18, I have no choice in what my kids choose to do. We have house rules and those will need to be obeyed.

If she chooses to smoke that her issue. I am of the mind there is nothing evil about smoking. In a world where alcohol and some drugs are legal... the demonization of smoking is pathetic. Similar to the wackos complain about Washington's football team's nickname. Don't people have anything better to do than worry about someone else. Don;t judge someone unless you are willing to be judge. Sadly, most people can't.

But she loves daddys clouds when we are outside... And my niece absolutely LOVES me after i stopped smoking (shes 7 months older) i get tons of hugs now and she calls my name several times a day when im not there... Must be the smell of candy that does it...

You have to be realistic about it, I started smoking at 12, not sure what age I was when my parents found out, maybe 13/14 yrs old, maybe day one. They never allowed me to smoke, until 16yrs old. They both smoked and always asked us not to.

I do agree with the poster who's comment was about kids being more likely to smoke if the parents do, (obviously not always) but I also believe in being honest and not sneeking around to hide it from the kids (they will find out) that's not a attitude/behaviour I want to teach them either. My kids will know my boundaries and reasons for them, I can only hope that they make a better choice than I did...of course in some areas I hope they are just like me! Lol

Mom to a 5 year old, and my husband still smokes. Our daughter knows that daddy smokes and mommy uses a vaporizer (she's asked me what both were). I don't do the scare tactics about smoking like some people did with me when I was her age (not just stating facts, but actually trying to scare people, like saying "If you smoke one cigarette, you'll fall over dead!"), but I do tell her that smoking makes people get sick easier, makes breathing more difficult, etc. I try to be simple, but a little blunt about it. I tell her that vaping is better for me than smoking was, but not necessarily perfectly safe.

She giggles when I blow a cloud out and talks about how mommy can make clouds, and she seems to avoid my husband more when he's smoking or has just gone out to smoke, but she seems fine to sit on the couch while I vape at my desk about 10 feet away. I don't vape when she's close to me, but I don't mind doing it in the same room as her. She said once, after I explained vaping, that mommy won't get sick as much, so I think she kind of gets that it's better than smoking was. It's also a good conversation starter for having the substance abuse talks and the like.

I grew up on a tobacco farm in the 70's and every teen/adult I knew as a child was a smoker. I have absolutely detested the smell of cigarettes all my life and have never had the urge to try one. Nearly every other child my age felt the same way and I can't think any of my peers grew up to smoke cigarettes.

Now cigar and pipe tobacco is a different story and I've always enjoyed them since they smelled more like the leaves that were drying in the tobacco barns...sweet and aromatic. I guess that's why I enjoy vaping, but abhor cigarettes.

In the end a teen is going to do what a teen wants to. When it comes to the little ones I'm just so unsure how much affect vaping in front of them will have on their decisions in the future.

It's good to hear many members do vape around the kids. My wife is just glad I'm off the smokes and when I do happen to take a few pulls in front of the kids she never says anything about it but inside I still ask myself if should even be doing that time to time.

Father of a 3 and a half year old and my wife vapes too. We never smoked in the house or car and always kept him away when smoking outside. We do vape in the house but try to keep him out of it. I read some reports about there being trace amounts of nicotine in exhaled vapor and the last thing we need is to have him more hyper than usual.

two girls, ages 17 and 8. I didn't smoke in the house, but I did smoke in the car when they weren't in it. with vaping, I satisfy the younger's curiosities, answer questions, I exhale through my nose on command "be a dragon, Mumma!" and it's very clear that my vape stuff is like an adult beverage- not for kids. both are BIG supporters! my youngest likes to tell people about it at the grocery store.

anything I'm not currently using is upstairs in the bedroom, and any juice bottles stay in a lockable drawer. I have good kids, most of the time, but I'm also not going to make any temptations.

3 kids. One is 25 and though he grew up around me, my mom, and his stepdad smoking, he still doesn't.

The other two are 11 and 13 and have never seen me smoke (I quit cold turkey when pregnant with the 13 year old) or my boyfriend (been with almost 7 years). Their dad and his girlfriend still smoke most of the time except for the failed quit attempts. My daughter (11) has asthma that's triggered by cigarette smoke and comes home wheezing after weekends with her dad.

Both of my younger kids think vaping is "cool" and like the way it smells. They have both been told that when they're 18 they can do whatever they want. They will likely try it long before then, but if they start to vape regularly it depends on how much and how old they are when they start. That's a bridge we'll cross at the time; but if they're going to do something, I would rather it be vaping than cigarettes. For now, they know that vaping is an adult hobby.

Same and same. My daughter is 7 and knew I smoked. She's also the one who begged me to quit. So she's happy I'm vaping now instead :) She's used to not being able to have "adult" things - like the fruit in my sangria I'll get if we go out to mexican ;) LOL

I like this nonjudgemental parenting thread, btw. Feels good to know we aren't alone! Felt like a black sheep enough as it was being a smoking parent!

I have a 12 year old and we do not hide vaping from him. At all. We explained it, and he's smart enough to know it's better than stinkies and he doesn't pay any attention to it. Plus, he thinks they smell like Jolly Ranchers. He has no desire to try them or anything like that. It's really a non issue in our house.

Edited to say: I also have a beer/glass of wine or whatever in front of him. Always have. That's also a non issue. Do I get drunk? No, but he's used to seeing it so...also, a non issue.

I have a 7 and an 11 year old. My future wife and I used to smoke ciggs but switched to vape pens. We have told the girls that the Vapor pens are helping us quit smelly sticks and they haven't said anything. That said, I don't puff on it much around them as much as I do when they go to bed.

I've shared this story a few times on here.

I never smoked in the house or in my wife's car. I did smoke in my car, but my wife and daughter never rode in it except for the ocaasional 2 minute drive to the in laws and back on cold or wet days. Outside, I always stayed away from the family and made sure the wind wasn't blowing in their direction.

I smoked 3 packs a day. The smell on me was so strong that on cold or wet days I would have to change my shirt and put on cologne in order to be around my family. Even with all of my precautions, my wife's asthma continued to get worse. Even worse, my daughter spent the first 3 years.of her life with chronic brochitis and ear infections. It is not fun holding a screaming toddler down to give her a breathing treatment.

First day.I had my ecig, I blew a cloud riht at my wife. We both agreed there was no point in me switching if it affected her or the child. It didn't bother her, and since then I vape whenever I want to in the house. The wife's asthma is virtually gone and my child hasn't had bronchitis or a severe ear infection in the past 2 winters. My daughter knows not to touch my ecigs and doesn't even comment on them anymore.

And if my daughter grows up to smoke or vape, I don't really care. I enjoy smoking, and even after 14 years lf 3 packs or more a day my health hasn't been too severely impacted. I'm glad I mostly vape these days, but I doubt I'll ever quit as long as it remains available.

My kiddos are 3 & 4. They ask what it is, love the smells of the vape. I tell them it's for grown ups only, and it keeps us from smelling like stinky smoke. They've seen us smoke, now they see us vaping. I don't blow it in their faces by any means, but I don't hide it either. They know to never touch any of it because it will make them very very sick.

I once rolled about 10 packs of cigarettes in one sitting, took me a couple hours. I jumped in the shower and came out to all ten packs shredded to pieces, tobacco and paper all over the kitchen I'd just cleaned earlier that day. They saw a whole new side of angry mom that day and since then have never tried to touch our cigarettes, lighters, pvs, liquids, etc. I don't leave tons of it lying around, but I have no worries about leaving my Triton laying on the table while I take a shower or walk to the mailbox because they really do get that it's unacceptable to touch it.
