Makes sense. Then maybe my coils were still burnt and needed more dry burning? I still got that nasty burnt taste. Also, after rinsing, I have had wicks just disintegrate, falling off in thin strings. I am reading about rebuilding coils/wicks, but chances are, I will never get around to doing it.
Silica is glass and as such it is brittle and can break off as you mentioned... they aren't extremely brittle, just enough that it is normal to have some break off.
Ok... I'm going to mention things I think ( based on your post count ) you already know... just so nothing is missed.
Top coil CE type carto's and tanks require that the device is kept tilted in order to keep the wicks wet. I keep mine tilted enough to keep the liquid up to the head where the wicks enter. This is the most common issue with new users or those only familiar with filler type carto's.
Thick juices are also more prone to "dry hitting" than thinner ones... So mostly PG juices won't have this issue as much as juices that are mostly VG ( or all VG for that matter ).
The coils should be as high as where the wicks come into the center tube... it should also be sat level with where the wicks come in. If the coil is pushed down or isn't sat level... use a bent paperclip wire or something similar to raise the coil.
Finally... too high of a voltage or wattage setting on the PV can also cause dry hits... this is partially dependent on the juice also... Certain juices will taste burnt quicker than others. It is recommended to start with the lowest voltage/wattage setting and raise it until you find the sweet spot you like the most.
