YouTube - DSE 901B USB MOD

I did a video demonstrating the USB mod for the DSE 901B. It's pretty basic, but if anyone wants to give this a shot it honestly works. I'll post up a basic diagram of how it is hooked up to give people something to go on when doing this mod. The only challenging part is gutting the existing battery but all in all it took me a few short hours to do from start to finish, and really works well. I forgot to mention in the video, but with wall USB adapters and cigarette lighter to USB adapters (10-15bucks for a combo set) you can plug it into the wall, or in your car. I used mine in the car today and it worked great.

I'm running it off my PC directly, and have not had an ounce of trouble with it just like it is. If you're worried it might damage your USB port, go out and buy a $10 USB switch (or) as Trog suggested get a Y-Adapter for additional protection. This particular model runs directly from USB (Mine is +4.75v) and is only slightly higher than what the battery puts out. If you want to lower the voltage to the atomizer slightly, and you don't know how to calculate the values for the resistors needed I can add a simple set of resistors to my layout and you can add those components to yours..but honestly it isn't needed. I'll keep using this bad boy and if anything happens I'll keep you all posted. This thing is very handy.

nice vid, probably not something i will be doing soon as i dont have the expertise so much. did you have to remove the battery and chip from the shell completely to do it? and is the chip still in there or did you remove it? and how did you get the threads out. ever think of doing a video when you are making the next one?

Actually I may be making another one soon for someone else. If I do, I'll be sure to cover the process on video and post it here. It does take a little bit of knowledge in electronics, some soldering skills and steady hands but overall, not too complicated. Yes you do have to pull out the battery and circuit board inside the battery casing. There is no longer a chip, only a straight power source to USB that is activated by the switch. I can push the switch, let it heat up for a second, and then take a puff. I didn't remove the threads at all, I went in thru the front of the battery (LED side) to remove everything from the battery except the threaded section closest to the atomizer. If I remove the threads I can actually make it a lot smaller but didn't really see the need to.

HAHAHA!!!!!! That was awesome. "I feel like Dustin, can you see that?" That made my day. I guess people do watch my videos after all. And yes, I'm amazed that i can smoke so much as well, but in some of my videos you can watch my nicotine intake go too high. I start forgetting and misplacing things. Yes i use 18mg or 24mg liquid most normally.

Good video. i did something very similar with a battery for a pen. Let us know if it kills your atomizer any quicker or not. Very nice. Keep up the tinkering.

I'm just pickin on you Dustin... I really enjoy your videos you've been a big help to me as far as learning about different products. When I saw you smoke up 2 penstyles at once I was amazed :D I'm still using the same atomizer as when I started, keeping close watch on it. So far so good!

About removing the chip...yes it is on the side towards the threads. I took a small nail and punched it thru and removed the whole thing aside from the threaded part. I needed that part in tact to make contact with the atomizer.

Hi Barry - Make sure to keep us updated once you mod yours. The only drawing I did was posted and it's on the first page. All you have to do is put a small switch on the positive lead then run it thru the center piece and solder to the positive pad on the battery. The negative side is tricky, since there's more surface area and it's painted you need to take an area towards the bottom (where the LED was) and sand it down. This will remove the paint and scratch up the surface making it easier to get a solder ball attached to the casing (for your USB negative wire). Be careful to make sure you use heatshrink or some form of protection on the wires when you connect the switch so your + connections are never shorted to ground. This is especially important when you are inserting the wires back into the battery tube to secure. Do not super glue the switch to the side of the casing! Super glue gets all inside the switch itself and will ruin it. I tore up one switch with glue. What I ended up doing for the switch mounting is just put some electrical tape on the metal surface first, set the switch on top of that, then secured it by putting another layer of electrical tape over the wires. I used a few drops of super glue to secure the cables inside the battery tube once everything was routed the way I wanted it. Make sure you check for shorts before you plug anything in to USB power, and make sure your voltage is correct with and without the button pressed before you secure anything. You should only have power to the device when the button is pressed. If you accidentally apply power to the atomizer constantly, or for too long in one burst it will fry so check your connections really well before you plug it in.

Do not attempt to inhale on the eCig immediately after this mod. Ideally you want the center hole sealed so no air can come from the casing. In the case that it is not compeltely sealed, and you have superglue that is not completely dry inside the casing you could inhale superglue that has not hardened yet. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Let it sit for at least one hour.

I understood that a standard usb port can only supply 500ma of current. A normal atomizer draws slightly more than 1 amp. This would tell ME that this config would exceed the normal current for a USB port, and the higher voltage would degrade the atomizer, but that is a .... educated guess.

Where is trog? He probably has done all this calculating before.

i'm good... thanks though. you should see the sheer number of e-cigs in my possession. Would make many people shudder.

I bet you do have one hell of a collection there Dusty. Glad you enjoyed the video. If I can think of anything else worhtwhile I'll post another one haha. Maybe I'll measure the current draw on 1 vs 2 USB plugs with a Y-adapter. I'm going to make another cable soon I'll try to cover the whole process on video for everyone... this one was just to show how basic it is and how well it works.
