Perhaps we just need to cave in now and start making e-liquid, snus, snuff, and dissolvable (all of which are legitimately designed to assist us in quitting smoking) in poop flavor or perhaps vomit flavors so no one will think we are trying to hook the kiddies.

If people who use such products do not wake up soon we will all be vaping crap flavored e-liquids while sticking manure smelling snuff up our nose and partaking of a vomit flavored snus portion.

I am so tired of this protecting the kiddie’s crap. I am a mother of two and I am capable of instructing my children.

I grew up in a house where there was a loaded shotgun hanging on the wall every single day of my life. I never took it down; I never shot my friends or myself. I was instructed in what it was, what its purpose was and the consequences should I ever be stupid enough to abuse it.
My father had pipe tobacco (which smelled awesome) and chunks of chew tobacco that looks like brownies. I once wanted some of his chew because it looked so good. He gave me a piece; I chewed it and was very ill. Never wanted to partake of it again.

I am just tired of all this crap. This product looks like it will be useful to assist people in not smoking.

I wonder when the bans on flavored alcohol and mixed drinks will start. When we go out for dinner my children think the mixed drinks look very tasty. Is no one going to demand they be banned in order to protect my kiddies!!!!!!!!

It's always about the 1,800 kids (who had a non-lethal accident obviously, since they didn't list any deaths) and not 43 million adult lives potentially saved.

Those kids obviously had nicotine-addicted parents, who were trying to find a safer alternative, so they could be around to see the kids grow up. (I'd make a crack about inattentive parents, but since I've had at least one near-miss with all my kids over one thing or another over the years, I know accidents happen to even the best parents.)

There is a choice: 1,800 kids face potential risk or 80+ million orphans & kids who never met their grandparents who died from smoking tobacco.

Thank You Kristin!!.....Or you can just follow my humble formula Mom+Dad=Smokers=Wiz(Ex-Smoker)+E-Cigs=Non-Smoker+WizKids=Kids who know better than to take up smoking or using other products containing nicotine because of good parenting!

These are the same people who are saying e-liquid comes in fruit and candy flavors, therefore they are being marketed to children.

These are adult products for use by adults. Tobacco has become the ultimate politically correct issue. Just mention children and big tobacco and you will hear lots of gnashing of teeth, along with gasp of horror and concern about What about the children (gasp....). Once we make the world child safe it's going to be an awfully boring place for adults.

    Somewhere between here and there
Did anyone besides me see the video TB did on these products. I think the kids would be lucky to get one out of the container. TB tried several times before actually getting the container to dispense one. DG, you left out the sweaty .... crack liquid and toe jam snuff.

It is quickly becoming obvious that children really ought to be in the care of non-humans.
People are just too faulty to be good enough to parent or educate children. Children are far too precious to be entrusted to humans.

Any guesses for the farsighted multinational that has patented the Child Rearing Ark? Mr & Mrs Noah are of course robots.

No WAI! it is BS for the snuff, bs for the restrictions, bs for the pact and BS for the gubernment restrictions.

Most people are to effing ......ed to follow simple rules.

I saw get a grip of darwin awards and had those things out by the case. OH ya and if the little football helmeted knee pad wearing window licking drones wanna eat tobacco mints then allow them to. At least it will not be my tax dollars supporting the ......ation of an entire generation by them reproducing.

This is an important topic, and I posted this in the campaigning section:

I am about to throw in the towel. Idiots abound -- and they're tilting my world. Consider:

Boston, MA—A tobacco company’s new, dissolvable nicotine pellet--which is being sold as a tobacco product, but which in some cases resembles popular candies--could lead to accidental nicotine poisoning in children

No, these are not nicotine pellets. They are tobacco processed to contain extremely low levels of carcinogenic nitrosamines and pressed into small pieces that in no way resemble any popular candy -- unless you have 20/80 vision and are colorblind.

The study says Orbs, pellets made of finely ground tobacco with mint or cinnamon flavoring, are packed with nicotine and can poison children and lure young people to start using tobacco.

I wish they were "packed with nicotine". Far from it. Each Camel Orb has between 0.84mg and 1mg of nicotine. There are 15 Orbs in a childproof package that will frustrate even a competent adult. They dispense exactly ONE at a time -- and the pack fails to deliver about three out of four attempts to obtain an Orb. Even a small child, swallowing the entire pack contents, would not be poisoned because these are designed for oral absorption, not digestion via the stomach and small intestine. I would hope the stupid kid pukes. But the child won't die. Charge the parents with neglect and leave the product alone.

“They’re tobacco candy,” Senator Merkley said Friday. “Everything about them is designed for kids.

If I were Senator Merkley, I'd file suit against this news outlet for putting words that stupid in my mouth. Er, you aren't that stupid, are you, senator? I mean .. really. That is one stupid statement. I'll be looking for your lawsuit claiming you were misquoted.

Small, teabag-like "snus" -- pouches filled with tobacco that are placed between the upper lip and gum -- are also a potential hazard, according to the study, which appears in the journal Pediatrics.

Now they've gone too far. There's only a 200-year history of use to study in Sweden. No headlines scream babies dropping dead from eating snus all the time. Look at Sweden and you'll see the lowest lung cancer rates in the EU, thanks to snus. You'll see a population healthier than any other thanks to decreased cigarette smoking and increased snus usage. You won't even find oral problems that sometimes occur with chew tobacco, but not with snus.

Listen, every NRT product from Big Pharma is a hazard to children. Does anyone hear shouts of remove them "for the children"? No. It's tobacco being demonized. It's a slanderous campaign of lies. And the sad truth is so many people who should be above these lies now spout them -- for money, for conformity.

    For shame!

Tropical Bob that was a awesome post. You nailed it.

I bow to your wisdom. When I grow up I want to be like you!

Really I am being funny, but I loved the post, there really is not anything else to say on this topic, you said it all.

Nice post TB. I also laughed at the beginning of that ridiculous news article that said something like "these products are being sold in packages that resemble cell phones...."

    ahh here it is:
Smokeless, flavored tobacco products that look like candy and come in packages shaped like cell phones may be contributing to accidental poisonings in very young children, new research suggests.

I don't know how the heck being 'cellphone shaped' is relevant, or true.

what kind of child is stupid enough to try and eat a cell phone...? lol

Not to mention that if kids actually managed to get addicted to tobacco MINTS it would be a lot better for them than being addicted to tobacco CIGARETTES!

Correct me if you think Im wrong but I dont think dissolvables will catch on with kids. Part of smoking for kids is rebelling and I just dont see vaping or snus or dissolvables as filling that ticket.

Professor Brad Rodu has posted an excellent response to the study. The study is twisting the facts to the extreme.
Tobacco Truth: Poisoning Public Health Issues

So let’s do the math: in 2008 smokeless tobacco exposures were 0.16% of the 684,000 total exposures among children less than 6 years of age.

Connolly used the results of his study to comment that tobacco manufacturers were “recklessly playing with the health of children.” When put into proper perspective, (exposures like household cleaners, solvents and oils, paint and paint strippers, fertilizers), Connolly’s selective reporting of poison control information is recklessly playing with the tolerance of the American public for honest discussion of important public health issues.
