Brewster: I wrote a long commentary for the FDA as it prepares hearings on smokeless alternatives, and I concluded with just what you said. "Kids" -- teens -- will still seek out and use two tobacco producds: Cigarettes and chew tobacco.

These two also have the greatest health hazards. Given its new authority over tobacco products, the FDA would be wise to take on the most hazardous products while encouraging smokers and chewers to switch to FAR less hazardous tobacco alternatives.

Unfortunately, the anti's quit-or-die message is now firmly entrenched in regulator's minds. Continue smoking? Lots of desperately needed tax revenue both state and federal will be collected. Continue to force cigarette quitters only to NRT products? A $14-billion windfall flows to Big Pharma. Switch to snus or dissolvables or an e-cig? No taxes, no payback to Big Pharma, and lots of American dollars flying off overseas.

We are David against this Goliath, but by God I've got a slingshot and I won't go quietly with my rock in the pouch.

Well with these silly people running our country I am suprised they have not yet advocated just putting all the children into plastic bubbles until they are 18.

And somebody please tell me why all these flavored alcoholic beverages are ok and yet any tobacco product that is remotely pleasant to partake is considered a threat to the youth.

Doesn’t fruit flavored vodka appeal to teens over regular vodka? Doesn’t Hard lemonade in a bottle appeal more to a teen than drinking Newcastle Brown?

Why is it I can choose from 25 different varieties of fruit flavored alcohol at my local grocery store and yet everyone is hell bent to ban any flavored type of tobacco product?

Does Big Alcohol just have more money to throw at congress than Big Tobacco or is Big Tobacco considered to be the more evil of the two?

I just do not get it.

When I saw this- it looked like a swipe orchestrated by the Pharmaceutical Co's that manufacture nicotine gum & lozenges, at the tobacco co's who were presenting something of an alternative (yes, I know the differences, but you get the point).
Nicotrol has White Ice Mint, Fresh Mint, Mint, Fruit Chill, Cinnamon Surge. Commit lozenges in mint & cherry. Nicorette also has "mini-lozenges" in mint. But of course the PharmaCo's own our Congress, so "mini-lozenges" and flavors like SURGE!! are just fine and dandy.

Correct me if you think Im wrong but I dont think dissolvables will catch on with kids. Part of smoking for kids is rebelling and I just dont see vaping or snus or dissolvables as filling that ticket.
No, I agree with you! These will be as popular with teens/kids as ecigs or nicotine gum will. Nicotine gum comes in delicious flavors targeting kids, too, you know! Who else would want candy flavors such as cherry, mint and citrus?

I saw the ridiculous comment about the "cell phone" shape too and had to scoff. COME ON... they are oval. Is that illegal too? Can't have it in shapes, or colors because kindergardners might want some.

What about the caffiene (and Guarana) mints and gum...?? Is that not dangerous as well? I've never seen that with any restrictions. In fact, it doesn't even bring up an 'age warning' if you purhcase them.

kristin.....Having sampled a few of these flavored gums and lozenges I can honestly say they won't appeal to kids and teens(Still has to taste good).Like Brewster said kids are rebellious....Smoking should be the #1 concern for parents.Once they find that the Nicotine buzz wears off after a few uses, the facination(if any at all)will be gone!

I can't believe they have the nerve to take this position when "energy drinks" are flavored up the rear and full of all sorts of "natural" stimulants. Pick up a can of Rock Star, Red Bull, 5 Hour Energy, Sobe, or any of the dozen brands of these things sold at every gas station in town, and read the ingredients. Anyone know what effect large amounts of those combos of caffeine and herbal extracts has on a young body? Those drinks are marketed DIRECTLY AT and sold without any fanfare DIRECTLY TO kids. At least there is a good chance the clerk will ID and refuse sale of the tobacco products to a minor. Are they serious?!?!

It's always about the 1,800 kids (who had a non-lethal accident obviously, since they didn't list any deaths) and not 43 million adult lives potentially saved.

The number 1,800 is greatly inflated. In the 2008 report, the dissolvables are included in the category "Other Types of Tobacco Products." There were 97 case mentions--the smallest number of cases in any category.

I know! A couple days ago, my son and his friend brought over the latest drink and they were raving about it. (now mind you, they are 19, but as you said, anyone can buy them. They have been buying this crap since they were 14.)

This one is a "relaxation" drink called Sippinsyrup. I read the ingredients on the back. It had Valerian, St John's Wort (which can be dangerous if you are on anti-depressants), Melatonin, Skullcap, Kava-kava.. along with other herbal ingredients.

They were raving about this drink like it was the next biggest "high" (or low). These are not things you mess around with.. herbs can be just as dangerous (or more because people think they are 'safe' just because they are natural) as manufactured 'drugs'. They ARE drugs. Plain and simple. Just because they grow in the wild, does not make them any less of a mind altering substance than something created in the lab. Where do we think medicine came from? It came the stuff we could scavage and find in the wild. Some of the best drugs still are made with natural ingredients. And these drinks are targeted to our youth, and heavily consumed by the youth of today.

I read an industry article about the new relaxation drinks (and have not been able to find any for sale in my grocery stores yet, cause you bet I'll buy and try). These are considered the next "big thing" after the success of energy drinks.

Zombie kids. Just what the world needs. Better than wired ones, I guess. Until they get behind the wheel of their car and play "let's go fast."

jeez, melatonin alone will make you sleepy, but add skullcap, wort, and kavakava.... i'd be asleep very shortly after drinking this... I don't think this would relax me so much as make me pass out

Perhaps we just need to cave in now and start making e-liquid, snus, snuff, and dissolvable (all of which are legitimately designed to assist us in quitting smoking) in poop flavor or perhaps vomit flavors so no one will think we are trying to hook the kiddies.

If people who use such products do not wake up soon we will all be vaping crap flavored e-liquids while sticking manure smelling snuff up our nose and partaking of a vomit flavored snus portion.

I am so tired of this protecting the kiddie’s crap. I am a mother of two and I am capable of instructing my children.

I grew up in a house where there was a loaded shotgun hanging on the wall every single day of my life. I never took it down; I never shot my friends or myself. I was instructed in what it was, what its purpose was and the consequences should I ever be stupid enough to abuse it.
My father had pipe tobacco (which smelled awesome) and chunks of chew tobacco that looks like brownies. I once wanted some of his chew because it looked so good. He gave me a piece; I chewed it and was very ill. Never wanted to partake of it again.

I am just tired of all this crap. This product looks like it will be useful to assist people in not smoking.

I wonder when the bans on flavored alcohol and mixed drinks will start. When we go out for dinner my children think the mixed drinks look very tasty. Is no one going to demand they be banned in order to protect my kiddies!!!!!!!!
maybe we should not let our children use forks either. they can be used to stab someone after all. my six year old KNOWS not to touch my e-liquid and I too grew up with guns in my home.

let's see I'm sure I can make a very long list of things that are dangerous to children that we use everyday!

TB.....It's good to know that kids will be in complete control of their energy....Up to Down!! We used to just have a big breakfast or lunch and head out to the field and play baseball to get the same effect!

I keep my e-liquids locked up because of my 5 year old....but yes...she also knows thats Dad's grown-up stuff.I'm sure our Government will swith focus on Forks as soon as this silly smoking alternatives buisness is dead and burried!

Wont they just puke it up anyway? I swallowed some juice wnen I first started refilling and almost hurled in about a minute. Controlling kids should be a parents job, not the FDA or some stupid MADDesque group.
Not sure if Control is needed as much as educating and teaching our kids what not to do....generally using ourselves as examples! That in itself takes control to do! I like you would rather take that responsibility myself....Not the FDA or any other organization!

That stuff is blatantly being marketed as a legal form of the illicit practice of using narcotic cough syrup mixed with various sugary drinks that is popular in (mostly southern) hip-hop culture - often called sizzurp.

Talk about indoctrination. Ever wonder what's supposed to be in those cups a lot of rappers constantly have in their hands?

The scariest part is they will drink this stuff, then go get high, drunk, or take who-knows what. Then they wonder why their best friend OD's or kills someone in a car accident. My son knows 2 kids that OD'ed this year alone (and we live in a small town)

Oh that's just ridiculous. How obvious can you get. ???? It's even the same name and color.

Sad to say, in the last week since I heard about this drink, I have seen either my son or his friend with one almost every day.
If the government is so uptight about keeping drugs out of the hands of children, why are they allowing them to buy them legally?
