I make 11% less than I did two years ago. And, approximately what I made 10 years ago (at which time I felt good about my job). Same company for 22 years. They promised the pay cut would be temporary. I feel the object is to keep us too poor to relocate to a less financially depressed area. Just put in 30 hours a week overtime if you want to earn what you deserve from 40 hours. :( Plenty of work, but not a happy camper.

Any Cisco CCNA certified people here? I'm about to start CCNA quarter 4 (the last one) at the local tech school. I hope to find some part time work while in retirement with local companies who can use a certified network guy for installation, setup, and network troubleshooting and repair. What's the likelihood of me being able to do that without being full time?

I was a Senior Field Engineer and did similar work with hardware and software for a major company for 36 years before I retired. I thought it would be nice to get the CCNA certification and free lance during retirement.

Did that back before the dot com bubble, was interviewed 3 times where they asked if
I knew anything about TCP/IP !!!! Not sure many hiring managers know what CCNA stands for.

I work LIII support for a software company, supporting our customer's sys admins that should have never been given any administrative passwords to anything.
Well OK, maybe the password for the admin rest-room.

I hold the CCDE. And as far as part time availability, there are plenty of businesses who don't have a staffed IT department that choose to outsource their IT requirements to vendors. Pending on your location, I couldn't imagine it being very difficult to find that sort of work part time.

yep, not many other careers that will give you this kind of financial pay off in terms of salary for a 2 year degree. i have felt no need to get my BSN....been doing this successfully for almost 20 years and dont need to make any more money, and BSN's dont get paid any different in most places, or VERY little...definitely NOT enough to warrant investing 2 more years of my life and money...

Boo ya! Exactly what I was going for! I too am getting my associates (I hope to go back to get my BSN) but you're making me happy with that overtime!!! Woo hoo!

I'd do it tomorrow if not for the ball and chain....

Haha, bring it with you! Er I mean him!

Haha, I hear ya there! I want to definitely check the career out before I make any final judgements. But, I do want to keep my options open. Some hospitals here in Saint Louis offer you complete tuition reimbursment if you sign a few year contract with them. That is something I will DEFINITELY be looking into! Plus, I might want to be a nurse practitioner, but I have no idea quite yet...still have a while to go! RN FTW!

I always wonder why people don't want to say how much money they make... how are our young people going to figure out what career to choose? It's always been very confusing to me. Why the secret?

We keep it a secret in my profession because we have found from experience that people who do it for the money end up being monumental problem employees. I'm an electrical engineer and we want people who want to do electrical engineering, not make money. You could be a ditch digger and if that's you passion and you strive to be the best ditch digger ever, you'll make more money than you ever imagined. Same holds true for any line of work but never go into a job because you think it pays well, you will be miserable.

I am a MCSE and CCNA, and use neither in my current career. Back in the mid 90's I went to school for engineering, worked that for several years in between having babies and being a stay at home mommy. Then we started in the recession when I was ready to go back to work, no jobs, went back to school and got my MCSE and CCNA in 9 months. Man was that grueling hard work, but I did it. Got a job over the phone on the east coast, moved 3000 miles, worked 2 months and quit because the boss was a jerk who likes to yell. Ummm NOT. Took another job in IT working for a medical group under a tyrant and quit that also. At that point I realized that IT work is a hobby, not a career for me, so I went back to engineering and am very happy I did. One thing I hated about IT work... being given a cell phone and informed that I would be "on-call" 24/7. Uhhhh yeah... NOOOO!!!!! I am currently doing Tool Install Design in the Nanotech industry, among the several other hats I wear at work (including donating my IT skills and advice when needed). I dont earn what I'm worth, but I am able to pay my bills each month. I've never believed I'll be able to retire and plan on working until I die or am just physically unable to do it anymore. I do have a laughable 401K but being a single parent doesnt allow me to contribute much to it, not that the stock market would cooperate anyway. I really cant complain much as money isnt the be-all-end-all to me and I dont have the desire for the typical "american dream" or to be burdened with lifelong debt and stuck with possessions that are meaningless to me. I live a simple life and like it like that :)

I'm on call 24/7. We have people that refuse to. Then again, most of them didn't survive the last layoff. In this economy, I'd rather walk across hot coals than be unemployed.

I am one of the less than 50% of Americans that actually pays federal income taxes. I just wish i wasn't so hated by my government for working hard and footing the bill. You would think they would appreciate it.
