The day I started vaping was the last day that I had a cigarette, I didn't do the back and forth thing...been vaping for almost 4 months. Honestly, each day I have to "get over the hump" because each day I still want a cigarette. The only thing I can say is to remind her that it is a choice to smoke or not smoke, she is the one with the control, not the cigarette. That's what works for me, recognizing that I could smoke but that it is my choice not to.

Mark, just encourage her to vape a little each day. Tell her to try to replace a few cigarettes with vaping.

Sometimes, it takes a while. :)

If she wants to quit, she will transition, even if her pace of doing so is different than yours, mine, etc.

Sometimes, it's just Time. Took me 6wks. Well worth it. If she's using it at all, that's a good sign. The equipment you've gotten her should be good enough.

I agree. some people stop smoking immediately and some, like me, vape and smoke for a while. I started at 2 1/2 pad (at least). 3 weeks I was down to 2 cigs a day painlessly.

when I wanted a cig I vaped for a while and then if I still wanted the cig, I had it, guilt free.

for the record, I still smoke those 2 cigs a day because I'm old and I want to. so I vote you give her some time and celebrate the cigs she doesn't smoke - ignore the ones she does :)

Finally, if she's tech savvy, can she get on this forum? I credit this, my most successful quit attempt ever, to the support and help I receive in this forum. Or is there a nearby group she could go to?x

I am going back home to spend new years eve with her tonight and I will be signing her up up and showing her around ECF. I will also show my dad so he can help her out. You are all incredible! Thank you!

She smoked "Lights" or "Golds" as I think they are called now. So I got her 18 mg for the most part, but some of the sampler packs came in 12mg. Maybe I will grab her a 24 just to try out. Thanks again for all the insight!!

Since you're already dealing with HHV, both Shadowfax and Dark Horse are VERY cigarette-like in taste, and both are good to go without steeping. For me, good juice made the difference. BTW, I smoked for 35 years; it took about three weeks to quit.

When I ordered 300 ML of juice, I also purchased 30 Ml of WTA (whole tobac alkaloid)& when I would have a period where it felt like something was 'missing', I will add maybe a ML of WTA & that fixes me right up. Scratches that ictch, so to speak. It is costly but it works adding just a little to the mix. It has helped me through a few rough spots. After 50 yr of smoking I figured I might have some tough spots. I have gone 7 days now and am doing great & again, the WTA has been invaluable. I generally have a little in the morning & then I'm good for the day puffing just nic. Good luck to your mom! I must add that I have only had to use the WTA 3/4 different diff times.

Thanks, Keith! I am pretty unfamiliar with WTA so I will do some research and see if she wants to try it down the road.

She seems to be digging the Cherry at the moment. I will definitely look into Shadowfax nd Darkhorse, though. I realize she is still very early in the transition. I just like to help out where I can.

I guess it's different for different people but there was very little "hump" for me to get over. Firstly - I wanted to stop smoking. Smoking, for me, is socially akward as none of my friends or co-workers smoke. It's smelly and expensive and everytime I bought a pack of smokes I felt like an idiot. I had been a pad smoker for 15 years, quit for 5 years and then started again for 3 months - was up to pad again and starting to feel the negative effects of smoking - when I found vaping . .so I still knew what it was like to be a non-smoker and I wanted to go back to being a non-smoker.

Making the switch was easy. I allowed myself to smoke and vape at the same time. The first day of vaping I probably smoked about 6 cigarettes. Over the next few days to a week it dropped to 0. I haven't had a cigarette in probably 2 weeks.

The only trick is that I still get cigarette cravings. It took me a few days to "trust" that an e cig could satisfy them .. because it seems to hit me a bit slower so I don't get quite the immediate relief that a cigarette provides . .but it only takes a few minutes and the craving is gone. At first I tried to vape pretty continually - to avoid cravings in the first place - but now I don't chain-vape except when I'm web surfing in my office alone.

I bought my Mother-in-law a volt set-up - same as you. She has health motivators - but obviously she doesn't feel alienated by being a smoker, she doesn't really go too many places where smoking isn't allowed and she's been smoking for many years so she no longer remembers what it's like to breath easy and have a keen sense of taste and smell. We live in seperate states so all I could do is give her the e cigs and wait to see what happens.

One tip that worked for me. I never thought of vaping instead of smoking. That just wouldn't have worked for me. I thought of vaping as something new and decided to do it between cigarettes. Taking that approach didn't feel like I was depriving myself but giving myself something new. That second cigarette took a longer and longer time to light as I just vaped in between. Hope I explained that right. Some smokers panic when thinking they can't smoke is what I'm trying to say. Like back in the day I was an average smoker until I couldn't do it wherever I wanted. That turned me into a chain smoker. There's also the focus factor. Thinking about WHEN you CAN have a cigarette makes you focus on them... obsessively. So I don't do that.... just decide to vape in between without a limit on the smokes. Trust me... they do decrease and rather dramatically.

For me it was finding the right juice. I use a cinnamon with a bit of menthol. (Sinthol from VaporCast) I had to find something a little harsher with a good throat hit to make me feel like I'm smoking. I have other flavors that I like but none of them remind me of smoking like the cinnamon. I also went back and forth between cigs and vaping. It finally dawned on me that after I had a cig I would immediately vape because the taste was sooo much better.

How did I get over the "hump" ? True Grit, son:laugh:

Seriously at first I will admit I had some rough days. One of my biggest helps on those days was to read this thread here
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...hen-quitting-tobacco-changing-ecigarette.html

I kid you not. It was a huge help to me to know that I wasn't alone in this and that other people had gone through the same exact thing I was . I had felt like crap in the past when I tried to quit, but this is the first place I have ever seen such a list of things you are going through. And it wasn't in some dry clinical lingo either. It is real people having real issues. So I wasn't alone, that made a difference.
I do have friends who smoke and I won't lie, I have bummed a smoke here and there, but so far I can't get much past 5 hits before gagging. So I used the one or the other approach, not both.
Cigarettes are almost $10 a pack here, I was a PAD + on the weekends, and it was just too dam expensive. Even if I spend $2 a day vaping I am still almost $300 a month ahead here.
I am starting to have more energy, and I don't get winded as easily.
Way to go for turning your mom onto this. If you can show her some of these threads, maybe it will help. Good luck to her on her journey
Oh yea, I smoked ultra light smokes, but I have to use a medium not low vape, the low vape just doesn't cut it .

Here is a poll that asked the same question you are asking...
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...ou-put-down-those-last-couple-cigarettes.html

It shows the amazing variety of things that people want and need in order to quit smoking.
And it shows very clearly how different we all are, and how important it is to identify what really matters to you.

My best advice is to help her figure out what exactly is her stumbling block.
Unfortunately, many people don't even know what that stumbling block is until they conquer it.

You know, I think the biggest thing that helped get me over that hump was waiting a few days and then having a cigarette (Or trying to) and realizing how nasty they really are... That, coupled with the fact that I really WANTED to quit, helped a ton.

Obviously there is a lot of psychology involved here, as well as a chemical dependency. For some, that chemical may not necessarily be the nicotine. It could be the oral fixation, it could be the gesturing of smoking, the routine... I think the biggest part of anyones success is their desire to put them down forever. If she's not ready to quit yet, it may not happen... Don't try to force the issue, as much as we know it's killing us, we all have to quit on our terms... Not someone elses.

Unfortunately, with smoking, often times we quit cause God pulled the plug on us... Obviously, if she waits til then, it was too little too late.

My goal when I started vaping was to go from 2+ packs a day to 1/2 pack. Took me two months to lay the last one down. Seemed my body kept telling me when to drop a few more cigarettes a day...until there were none. The 24 meg juice may be what she needs though.
I didn't get to the end without it. However after being smoke free for a month or so I found that I could start dropping the nicotine level as long as I kept a higher level for that first one in the morning :) Then that too has gone by the wayside and now a year later I just vape 6 meg all the time. But I chain vape just like I chain smoked. I smoked PallMall menthol, which I looked up to find what nicotine level juice I needed to replace them and it came out 24 meg.

For me it is getting a good lung full of vapour nice and thick and to do this i use a usb pass thru without the battery in line. i make my own and this seems to satisfy me . i use a usb to ac adapter at 1 amp and 5 volts. just right and way more vapour than the smoke off a cigarette. i found the battery powered 3.7 v devices not to be satisfying.
