............ Non-Smokers as well as most smokers have no idea what I'm doing and it's just better overall to treat it like an analog.

And as long as vapers act like it is the same as smoking, it will be treated as being just as dangerous as smoking. If you are not willing to "respectfully advocate" for vaping, the perception that you are harming others will become the reality.

I vape pretty much anywhere except for restaurants and gas stations. I never smoked while eating at a restaurant, nor when filling up my car with gas, either. I will Stealth vape in places where smoking isn't allowed, like at the movies or in a store. I stealth vape at work, as well. At home, in my car, or out in the open, I vape like a research monkey. (Thanks Drew for that phrase!)

Without permission from the owners of the property I am at, I vape where one would usually smoke, after all most of the places we are at are private property. By being courteous and respectful several places have now learned about it through me and have told me it is ok to vape in their establishments.

I didn’t vape at work until yesterday, I went outside to vape, but let people around me know that I was not actually smoking at all, my management went to HR ( which had no policy on the subject whatsoever ) and instead of hearing about it from complaints ( which is what would have happened if I just started vaping at my desk from the begining ) the non-smokers including my management went to HR in my behalf and I can now vape at my desk as long as it does not cause problems with others.

My advice is to remember that 99% of the time, you are on private property, at a supermarket, in a bar, in a restaurant, at work, almost anywhere you go.

In public places I vape where I please, but make sure I am not obnoxious about it and am happy to inform people if they are curious.

As always you will catch more flies with honey than vinegar, allow other people to be generous would be my advice.

If we all stand shoulder to shoulder demanding our rights on other people’s private properties, I am sure we can have it banned everywhere in very short order. If however we show the utmost respect and courtesy to the proprietors, and to their other customers, we allow them to be generous, and they become the teachers of others that it is not smoking.

i openly vape everywhere, my reo could not be mistaken for a cig, i get an odd look once in a while, and the random person over react like it's a cig. the fake coughing and waving their hands around the whole theatrical production. i also carry ecf cards in my wallet, and my girlfriend carries leaflets in her purse. education is the key to acceptance she encourages that i vape openly with the logic that if i act like a smoker, then ill be exiled with the smokers. the main reason i made the switch was so my clothes would stop stinking, and so i wouldnt have to be shoved into a dark corner somewhere like i was a leper.

I had to share this one.... 4AM, local chain restaurant (think Denny's only with better food). My roommate, son and I are one of 3 tables of guests in the whole place, kind of off by ourselves....

I ask the server politely if we can use our PV's. He looks quite confused, so I explain to him what it is. He looks very confused and says "Okay". Suffice it to say, English was not his first language.

My roomie and I start vaping away. Before we know it, at least one person from every table and a few from the kitchen have come by to look at our "fancy contraptions" (we have kr808d-1's, if it was a mod we really would have had a crowd). I handed out more cards and napkins with stuff written on it since I was a hot 21 year old in a bar :D

One of the tables was a group of law enforcement. When they came over I thought....oh boy. They were more curious than the rest. No problems, no hassles, nothing...

Smokers and nonsmokers alike were intrigued. And most said either "I want one" or "I want to get one for...."

But I don't think anyone ever explained to our poor server. He looked at us like we had 2 heads for most the time we were there :)

Ask nicely in situations where it might be questionable. You never know what they will say.

I can understand that point. But to me, with my limited knowledge on the subject after only a couple weeks, I'm in the school of thinking that I can and should inform the smokers that need to quit first. I'm just not to the point where I'm comfortable vaping in a crowded restaurant or ready to inform every family there that what I'm doing is not harming them or their kids. Getting my nic fix can wait as to respect others personal space. So in reference to your quoting me, I go to the analog hangouts cause it helps others sometimes while not stirring the pot inside. When I'm not as ignorant on the subject a couple months down the road, you're right that changing the perceptions of vaping in public should be on my list of thing to do, just want the knowledge to back up my debates.

Going outside or hanging in a smoking section with smokers, having a few of them ask questions and walking away knowing that I possibly helped someone off analogs is just too good of a feeling atm.

Also, wv2win, got my Bachelor's from WVU, so go blue and gold!! /cheers to that at least :)

Vaping in smoking areas introduces smokers to the vaping world. They always ask about the Ecig and are amazed at how much vapor my Ego-T Tank produces. If we don't mind going back to the smoking area, we can convert smokers who haven never seen an Ecig in operation.

Same here... I get a lot of questions, and the vapor this thing produces blows them away.

I loved the story about 4am in the restaurant too... that is exactly the way to do it! Ask first, as you are on property that belongs to someone else. And then it becomes a teaching opportunity, instead of assuming something wrong thing.

Great job and thanks for sharing. This is the exact position I have been advocating. If all we do is slink off with the smokers, then that is exactly where vaping will stay. And although I won't just come out and say that I don't believe a story where non-smoking co-workers decided purely on their own to go to management and petition for people to be able to vape in their work place, I will say confidently that will happen once every 20 years, possibly. If we as vapers are not willing to respectfully advocate for vaping, as nevadabadgirl did, then no one else is going to.

Excellent points. At only a week or two, I felt the same way you do. I am glad you see the need to change perceptions which means putting ouselves outside the "smoking box" and educate others why vaping is not harmful. I also don't see a problem vaping with smokers occassionally just to hopefuly make more converts. I just don't think it is wise for us to automatically do that or only be willing to vape in designated smoking areas.

And, Go Blue and Gold, always!! Almost Heaven, West Virginia.

@wv2win... respectfully, I'm happy to explain what it is if someone asks, but I'm not patient enough or outgoing enough to intentionally put myself in a place where I am forced to confront people about it and evangelize it to the masses.

I will quietly write my letters to people in government offices and avoid drawing attention to myself when I'm out and about.

I may even support casaa so that they can advocate for me, that's what they are there for.

To be honest I vape wherever I feel like it. I check in places of business first and see what they say, but many places I go do not stop me. The more peoples see this the more we can get the word out on what vaping really is. We still need to be respectful of course and if people say you can't don't, but also make sure they know what you are doing and not just assuming that it's the same thing as smoking. People need to hear and see the truth or else the half truths and lies spread by people like the FDA will get e-cigs banned or restricted to such a degree that the cost will sky rocket and every time you are out of carts you will have to see your doctor.

My turn -- one of the reasons I started vaping was so I could do it more places. Smoking in outdoor places might be OK for many towns and cities, but not all and the allowed smoking areas continues to decrease around the US and Europe. Smoking is only allowed publicly in tobacco stores & the like in two nearby towns, including where my business was. No matter how much against tobacco you are--that is too much. So, I am not going to only vape where smoking is allowed!

However, I do agree with pretty much both sides of the arguments that come up on this. I do think the public is already more accustomed to "e-cig" as there was a lot of advertising over the holidays on TV and the mall kiosks seem to be about everywhere. I've been out and about some and have have no confrontations and very rarely see anyone vaping. I will vape various locations, depending on my mood, though not where it is crowded. I am more than willing to discuss the topic with people and have done so. Manners make sense----but I don't think we should cower.
