Yes, I know. I had one job where I did 3 people's jobs for a couple of months -- one person left and another was on maternity leave. But there are also times when hiring someone is more efficient that pay OT. Or sometimes it can be a bit of both (e.g. We'll bring in a temp twice a week. Save all your non-essential copying and filing for him/her.)

Jane, some companies will hire a temp, but many will just put the extra workload on it's employees. It's all about the bottom line with them and if paying some overtime to a current employee is cheaper than hiring a temp, then that's the way they will go.
Hiring new employees, even temps, can be a huge liability with all the regulations in place right now - esp. health care. Paying overtime is way easier and cheaper... as you point out. It's not Just bottom line - it's possible law suits as well... but yeah, everything goes to bottom line or they wouldn't be in business in the first place
... and there would be less jobs... like right now 
Depends on the size of the company too. Obamacare regulations kick in at 50 employees - many companies are at 49 and won't go no further.

Kent! Got the address and that's perfect! Instead of calling you tonight I'll do as you suggested. We won't be able to stay too long but will probably be ready to eat by then........unless I die from starvation beforehand.
