And I could care less about the other dude's concerns about where the site money's going, I was just commenting on the concern about getting to all of these membership levels before you can actually use any of the great resources this site -- and from what I can tell only this site -- provide.

Just a note, but he addressed the money comment to the OP (original poster). :)

Ahh, the good ole' "entitlement" snake rears it's ugly head again.

Nothing like giving someone something for free, only to hear them complain about having to do anything to get it to work the way they think it should.

The ECF, while not perfect, is one of, if not the best, places for people to find out just about anything in the e-cig world. It costs nothing and requires little or no interaction to access most of the information. It is a gem. I suppose people who joined last week could complain about not being able to read the veterans forums. And non-supporters could be miffed they can't read the supporting members forums. Do they deserve to be able to? Have you put in the time, effort and/or monetary donation to do so? No, but that don't matter; some think they should have the world handed to them on a golden platter.

In closing, I just wanted to say 'thank you' to the hard working staff behind the ECF. If I could do more, I would.

And to the OP, be patient. You have presented your point in a very civil manor, and I appreciate that, but things are the way they are for a reason. If my supporting funds go to pay for hosting or to pay for a toothbrush for jOker, it don't matter. I am happy for the support since joining, and information I had received well before I actually joined.

Salky

What's "entitled" about wanting to give another member money to buy things they want to sell? Or participate in carto co-ops to help fill minimum orders? You might want to check out Dictionary.com there buddy.

ECF is a community, and when you move in to a new community, it isn't too hard become a part. Take a walk around, say hi to people who are also new and give another person a hand, especially the new ones. If you have gained from the resources at ECF it isn't much trouble to share a little knowledge or encouragement with others as a fair payback.

As it's a community with some rules to minimize spammers and fraudulent types, who have previously caused harm, you have to abide by those rules. If you came here primarily to buy and/or sell things, there are more rules, intended to protect those that are here. Perhaps some times the volunteers are overly aggressive in their application of the rules, but that's not very common.

Many of us lurked and read for some time before joining. If the impulse to ask a question or get in a coop or buy something in the classys comes before you made the time to join and get settled in, it can be frustrating. Better to get that done before the urge hits!

Well, I was a member of another completely unrelated forum in which we had an ecig thread, and one of the guys there did a lot of co-ops and such here, so it was pretty much my only reason for joining.

Like I said, I have the information I need on ecigs, so I don't really have any questions, and most questions that are asked are answered very quickly by people who know much more than me, so basically, I'd be derping around giving people half-advise or asking questions that I already know the answer to just to hit a quota before I can use the function of the site I want to use the most.

When you move into a new community they don't make you do community service before you can use the Wal-Mart.

Well, notice I've actually been a member here longer than a lot of people posting in this thread, almost a year, I just found the hoops to jump through so tiresome, and there was always some arbitrary rule I was breaking (Which I'm sure there was a good reason for at some point in the past), but still, as admins and obvious supporters of the ecig community, I would think that the obvious move would be to make new-comers as welcome as possible, not to moderate their attempts to get a feel for the place. I had 25 or so posts doing what you suggested, and was told I was post-whoring, at which point I sort of threw up my hands and just went and bought a Lavatube (Which I regretted almost immediately upon arrival).

I understand the need for security and protection of any classified forums, but to be honest, post count really means nothing, and only encourages more threads about "What's better, the eGo-T or the eGo-C?". I have absolutely nothing to contribute to almost any conversation since invariably in every thread there's a smarter guy than me that's already answered the question better than I ever could, and I don't really have any questions other than "Hey, can I get access to the hidden Craigslist on your site", so I'm forced to chose between casually post-whoring and just not caring and finding other sources.

I mean, any forum regular knows that post count generally means very little, and 20 just seems silly.

But hey, please respond and this conversation could get me to my coveted 20 after just a year.

Its taken me less than a month to get my post count. If you have nothing to add to technical conversations, say hi to newbies and point them to what has worked for you in the past. That is still valid.

The 20 posts isn't silly -- it weans out many many scammers and spam agents. People will post enough to get past the 5/15 post barrier, then proceed to spam their overpriced kits to try to get takers in the forum at large -- this is what its made to avoid. If you're just spamming your posts, that sends up a red flag to management -- this person seems to be trying to hit their limit quickly, while contributing nothing to the conversation.

Now, contributing to the conversation doesn't mean you have to have something thats better than what the last guy said... the nice thing about this hobby is its all subjective, and just providing your experiences and opinions is enough to help out someone new along the way. Don't be afraid to respond to a thread when you have 1 of 5 answers, but don't know the other four -- there's no shame in recognizing that its the case. Being familiar with the way forums go, you should realize that this is part and parcel for a better site altogether, and taking anything personal when its for the greater good is just going to frustrate you.

...but this isn't Wal-Mart. Its more akin to a grocer's cooperative. You are a member, a functional member, and if you're expecting to shop there, you have to contribute to the wellbeing of the shop. If you've got skills as a butcher, you carve. If you've got skills with money, you handle inventory or checkout. If you feel you have no skills to contribute, you sweep the floors and greet people at the door. Exact same concept here.

Just cuz there's a 'for sale' section, doesn't make this the electronic cigarette clearing house.

Ok, so maybe REI would have been a better example. REI is a co-op, and members aren't expected to sweep floors or run a cashier station before they can buy crap from them.

Whatever the case, this conversation's getting me to my 20, so good conversation. I guess just by saying that I could have all of my responses deleted like last time, but like I said, it's just annoying more than anything -- especially since I know a guy on these forums who's known me from another forum for well over 5 years who participates in them all the time who could totally vouch for me, hence me joining the site. Hell, I bought a $1500 shotgun from a guy on that site totally through FFL shipment and paypal.

Honestly, I just wanna use the forums that were the reason for me signing up for this site in the first place, especially since I'm trying to find a decent mod online for the wife (She finally realized she hates the old Lavatube she's been "just fine" with while stealing my VMAX) and every damn site on the internet is out of them at the moment. (Which I found out why -- from this site)

Great site, great resources, I just think the barrier of entry is more silly than secure.

I don't think anyone will disagree with, or not understand, the frustration you describe. However, you have to understand that 'knowing some guy who can vouch for me' is simply NOT enough. Prove you're a person, if you want to get the benefits; its the entry fee to the club. Using the 'guy who can vouch for me' concept, you can end up in the situation that the mods are already trying to solve for at this very moment -- a scammer who was vouched by many people, had completed some successful activities, prior to initiating (whether an intentional scam or not) a situation that has bilked users of this site out of $20,000. We're not talking about a mod or 2 here; we're talking about the total income many people live on annually -- bilked by a single user.

Understand these facts, and you might get why the rules are in place -- they're there for everyones protection, and any minor frustrations you experience are only that; minor. If you want to play the game, the rules are already posted. :)

Edit: also, your REI example is not valid here. My Grocers Co-op one is, however. There are Co-Ops across the world that operate with this same design; local farmers, ranchers and merchants bring in goods for the store -- the customers who buy them are the same people prepping them for sale as well. They work the store, as part of the means to access the very goods they look to get. Its *EXACTLY* the same here. You are expected to participate, if you want to play the co-op or classifieds game, its as simple as that. If you don't participate, you don't get the big win and fabulous prizes.

Right, but like I said, post count is hardly a measure of trustworthiness.

Thats why you're not verified based on post count; you're only expected to prove you're a human with 20 posts before getting the opportunity to be verified. If it was based on a post count, yes, that would be stupid. It is not done that way.

Oh, and I already told the other dude he can call my mom, she lives right up the street from him. She'll tell you I'm a person. ;)

Even if it IS your mom, thats no better than "I know this guy who can vouch for me" -- the point is two-fold: Point 1) Make a minimum 20 posts that show you are not a spammer just looking to nab some clueless newbies before they know better with overpriced gear, or trying to misdirect people to your money-making scheme. Point 2) Confirm your identity with one of the methods listed.

The reason for this is really really simple: accountability.

This gives the site mods something that they can use as recourse when push comes to shove; and they have and will use this if you give them reason to. They will do so in a manner that is completely in-line with the law, but you will NOT be invisible and unknown in this situation. Proving your identity doesn't mean someone says "yeah, he's who he says he is" -- its done through methods that are notoriously difficult to fake, and in the end provide a direct line of recourse for the management of this site. What's not to get?

(respond to me and you hit your elusive 20! ;) )

Lol, I just read up on the new and improved Member System and apparently it's grown even more since I joined. Back then it was just 20 posts to hit the limit and you could access the section, and now I'm about half-way through the new policies.

I have no problem sending someone my phone number, email, home address, real name, all that good stuff, because I'm wanting access so I can buy things. I'm not looking to start forming co-ops or taking responsibility for shipping mods to 30 people, but I'd love to be one of those 30 people. They can have whatever information they want, because there's going to be no reason for there to be any recourse against me. I mean, I know there has to be some system, but tbh, I don't even have a pay-pal account because honestly, I hate using pay-pal. Their TOS suck, and they basically make money by holding money in dispute regardless of the validity of the claims, but I digress.

Ding 20. Again.

I gotta say, for a new guy to the site the verified member status is a serious pain in the .... I mean, there was a lot of great research and things I learned, but as a new guy to vaping I really had nothing to contribute but questions that were the typical the "new guy on the forums" type stuff, and being a member on a lot of forums, I hate being that guy. I tried to just start a conversation post in the new guy's section to get to my 20, and got posts deleted and told not to post ..... to get verified.

How else does someone get their post count up when they have no information to contribute to the high-level discussions on the intricacies of ohms for cartos, imr batteries, voltages and VV mods, etc, when you don't know anything? You have to ask typical new-guy questions that anyone who knows how to use the search function can find the answers to, and again, anyone with any forum experience would rather not be that guy.

I'm a 32 year old married tech guy who lives in Dallas. Call the guys at Vaporescence in Richardson, they'll tell you I'm a good guy who buys vape stuff, and I really only wanted to be a member here in the first place so that I can participate in the classifieds and co-ops, and basically, I gave up trying.

I honestly just came here looking for a way to buy a Provari for under $250 for the whole kit, possibly some carto co-ops, and figured it would be less hassle to just Google-fu it after the reactions I got for that sentiment.

I guess my point is that the people who would want to access those sections since Amazon and eBay are ridiculously boycotting all things ecig, are typically going to be new to vaping, and it's relatively difficult to get any traction here as a "trusted" member. I use a garbage Yahoo mail account for things like forums, Facebook, etc, so I'm not deleting 50 spam emails a day. This also makes me "untrustworthy".

I just think the process could be streamlined, for both the sake of new members, and jOker's sanity. Sonicdsl, my mom lives in Irving, you can ask her, I'm a great guy.

Sorry but your Mom will need to signup, make 20 post, become verified, and then we'll discuss your integrity :D

Just kidding. Click the link in my sig that says "Why become Verified" and you can understand why this was necessary.

I've consider starting a Verified Insured membership. Members would send me $5,000 as insurance, refundable upon canceling of their account. I can't get oldsoldier to go for it though, not without sharing half the funds with him.

20 posts?

Are you serious?

I got 20 the first day just welcoming other newbies like me.

Now that I've been here for more than a month, I've most likely put more than 100 hundred hours in researching, reading, learning, playing games, and winning stuff.

I'm even in a co-op.

Damn...some peoples kids.
