Why do I never see anyone using ecigs?

I vap everywhere and most people seem to not even notice. I vaped for 3 hours during the Bulls game at Hooters last night without a single glare. When I see others vap it's always a cheap disposable from a gas station, or an overpriced Blu. I have written down websites and specific models for friends and co workers to get.. But they NEVER listen. They either a, get a more expensive, less powerfull e-cig (one that quickly turns them away from vaping). Or b, buy the cheapo disposables, which also quickly turns them away from vaping. It's really a shame people just won't listen to me. It's become so frustrating that I don't even want to try and help people with it anymore.

I know my rant went a bit off subject.. But it really annoys me that no one around here will give vaping a real chance. Oh well, their loss. :)

In my city, I really don't expect to see many if any other vapers. I saw one at a poker game but that was it. I get asked about it, but people luv their tobacco.

I had an old lady (probably in her 50's, but looked like she was 70+) roll her eyes and let out an audible scoff when I explained the device. Then she lit another Pall Mall. I think most of us are into gadgets and stuff and this e-cig thing is an extension of that, but on the other hand, there are some old, grizzled, wish it was 1950's again, ...cold dead hands, worked fingers to the bone since they were 6, backwoods, 3 pack a day filterless dudes on here that made the switch and are happy about it.

Great question. I'm not quite sure what it is. The reaction I get is almost like what a multi-level marketer might receive. A kind of indifference...or perhaps resistance to being sold something they're not sure they want...or even want to know about.

And even if they did want it, they definitely don't want it from you.

People that know I vape are only mildly curious. They have no desire whatsoever to see whether e-cigs have anything to offer them. It's a novelty to them...an electronic toy.

But this begs the question, what is it about the people who vape that they'd move away from the norm and try vaping themselves? What makes us different? There must be a certain mindset that seperates vapers from other people, because it really doesn't seem like most people are the least bit interested in electronic cigarettes. It's this reaction that convinces me vaping will be a niche thing for quite a while.

I think Runes hit the nail on the head. I think the people that are drawn to eCigs are also the same people that like to futz around with various gadgets/gizmos. I'm a self proclaimed computer nerd. I've been building/repairing/programming computers since I was 14.

We're a society that's scared of change. That's all it is. How long did it take us in the U.S. to get a non-caucasian president? How many women presidents have we had? It's not just us in the U.S., those are just the prime examples I can think of. We're just scared of change is all it really is. I'm sure more than just the minority were almost forced to switch to vaping for one reason or another. Some for health reasons, some for cost (vaping IS cheaper than smoking), some for feeling banned as a person from society just for being a smoker. We have to be pushed really really hard to make a drastic change in our lives. That's my $.02, fwiw.

Interesting discussion!

I've only seen one other vaper while out. It was at a bar and the lady had what appeared to be an Njoy NPro or other analog sized mini. Had the orange LED.

I personally don't try to hide my PV in public places but I don't walk around in a cloud of vapor either. When discretion seems the better choice, I am ultra discreet. I'm sure others are as well. We are in a transitional period when anti-smoking sentiment is at an all-time high and PVs are still virtually unknown to the masses. We must tread a fine line. Deliberately blowing vapor (or tobacco smoke for that matter) in people's faces is not going to win us any brownie points. Plus, its just rude.

If someone should happen to ask what it is I'm smoking, I will explain to the best of my ability. To date, I've never been scoffed at once they have been informed. Reactions range from total disinterest to mild enthusiasm or acceptance. My friends are universally delighted that I no longer smoke analogs regardless of the method. Education of the masses in the most positive way is the key.

There is one area, however, that I avoid like the plague...DESIGNATED SMOKING AREAS. I don't want to be seen vaping there, with or without other smokers around. It simply lumps us into the category of tobacco smokers in people's minds...and that is counter-productive to our cause. Plus I smell like a stinky cigarette again. Gahhh! If I feel the need to espouse the benefits of PVs with other smokers, I pick another place. So, bottom line, if I'm vaping in public, I intentionally do it AWAY from these areas.

It is entirely possible that there are many vapers in my area. It is heavily populated after all. Its just that we still have a long way to go and I'm sure many feel as I do about being a bit cautious when out and about.

The quit rate and the sudden reduction in tobacco cigarettes that vapers experience is worth mentioning. I dropped from 2 to 3 packs a day to less than 10 cigarettes the first day I vaped. I still haven't removed the crutch, but I'm still NOT smoking the other 40 to 50 a day. That's significant.

I can't begin to count the number of people who tell me they tried Nicorette or Wellbutrin and quit. But most also say that once the prescription ran out they had cravings again and started back. It's the psychological part that the quit meds don't address. That takes a long time to go away. Ecigs satisfy that part of it. Your brain accepts the fact that you don't have one but you do have the other.

I haven't come across anyone in public asking me what I was sucking on, but I'm now prepared for when it does happen. I have Grimm Green's "business" cards and a few different cards from other vendors. I've put my own email address on them as well, so that if they really are interested, I can hand them a card and they can email me for more information.

I get a lot of people that after I explain it to them always ask me "Well how long before you stop smoking that thing now?"

My reply is always ,,,, Why?,, Nicotine no more harmful than caffeine.

It's fun to watch them try to think of a good answer. They can't.
But to them it's still a no no.

I agree with most posters here about why more people are not willing to try PV's, but I also find another reason for the hesitation. I cannot count how many people I have encountered that are really interested and take my advice about knowing what they are getting before buying a "gas station" or "convenience store" or "mall kiosk" model at a far inflated price. Most of them tell me they are leary of ordering online, some have ask me to order for them. I did that for a few, but got burned a couple of times, so now I give them the names and websites of vendors I know and trust and tell them to order themselves. The only exceptions I make are for really good friends or family who do not do internet (yes, there are still some out there) but I get the money up front even from them.

I know there are a few good brick and mortar stores out there, but they are few and far between at this time, maybe that will progress in the future.

The other thing I think we should all get in the habit of NOT doing is using ANY reference to smoking/cigarettes. We are NOT smoking, our PV's are NOT cigarettes, and any reference to those two terms puts a bad vibe on our devices and our usage of them. It has taken me nearly three years of usage to break those habits, but I have and once I explain my PV to others as an alternative to analogs, they seem to be a lot more receptive. But any reference to e-cig, smoking, etc., seems to put me right in the middle of their biased attitude.

Just my thoughts on it.... vape on !
