Why do I occasionally still smoke cigarettes even though I don't enjoy it?

I stopped buying them went to vaping and stuck it out. Cigs are very addictive with all the chemicals in them....it's not just nicotine

I kept the last pack unopened. For me it was easier to stop having a pack laying around then not having any. Not having any around would make me want one even worse.

My friend is like that. He has his last opened pack in a drawer. Think it's right around two years old now.

I still have it unopened. Maybe I should get it bronzed.....

Seriously while I was switching not having a pack around would have ended up in panic and going out and buying a pack and then smoking it. For some reason just knowing it was there helped.

I'm the exact opposite, if it's there I'll light when my feet hit the floor first thing in the morning. I don't know if I could live with a smoker due to that and the smell.

Well as someone already suggested it may be the inability to flick. I understand you can't flick a vape but you can flick a Bic. Eliminate all ashtrays lighters and matches from your life so it doesn't remind you to smoke. I'm not Sigmund Freud but I do believe that subconsciously when we look at items associated with smoking tobacco it feeds our desire to continue smoking. At least that's what happened to me. I threw out everything associated with tobacco use.

I'm not a big believer in Will Power. I once was...but an old man once told me to eat 3 boxes of Ex-Lax and jump in my car. He said to head to Florida and use Will Power to keep from pulling over. It just kinda stuck.....
A real desire to stop works pretty well, though.

There are a lot ofother chemical compounds in cigarettes that are addictive as well. I have smoked 3 cigarettes in the last 3 weeks. 2 of them were on a particularly stressful day at work. Most people at my job smoke. There were other times that I really wanted one but the feeling went away quickly after a few puffs off the e cig. The first place I used mine full time was the car. I dont like my car to smell like stale smoke, but dealing with Vegas traffic without any nicotine, well thats not gonna happen

OP lives in Japan. It'll take 12 hours for her to reply. Plus, she's 96.

If OP is 96 and still smoking then obviosly they are immortal and don't need to worry about quitting.
My first response was "****, I'll light one up to that", reached for my pocket and did not find a pack. Looks like I am smoke free another day...

Vaping is not a magic bullet. You still need to work at quitting.

    Good luck. :)

Fortunately for me, it fell into place!:)

Was down to my last half pack of analogs, about to go to the local cigarette store for more, before leaving went to get the trash can from the road & while there, the fellow who had been refinishings hardwood floors next door casually walked to to me. Greeted himself & asked my name, and then asked out of the blue 'how would you like to stop smoking?'.:)

Was a bit skeptical after 37 years because of all I had tried & told him so, he asked for an hour of my time to prove his method would work, and secondly, the initial product (24mg e-juice samples & used ego vape pen/charger) were on him, if I didn't like it, didn't need to return anything.

So after all of those years of analogs, all sorts of pills, patches, gums, everything except biofeedback, gave it a shot. I went in his work van & before I knew it, there were massive clouds of vape, smelled so good, almost delicious. Not the eye burning cloud in the least, although after 20 minutes, was on a huge nicotine high, trying one 18-24 mg sample after another.

Finally settled on three flavors, one of which am still vaping, although at 12mg rather than 24mg, which was needed at first. After I left & went back inside to put my vaping gear away, walked outdoors to smoke one of my last analogs & for the first time since I was 13 years old, it tasted very, I mean very nasty. Nothing I had ever done before had produced the same result....and I mean that literally.:)

By the time I was down to the last 2-3 analogs, was literally gagging, the last I stomped out after only three draws & would be my final in November 2013. For a few months, was satisfied with my ego device, he gave me a good deal ($20) on a 2000mAh model which gave me two, three tanks (the first were disposables) & two packs of 1.8 ohm single Kanger coils in the white box. And told me not to throw the burned ones out, that he'd show me how to save cash by recoiling & wicking with silica, held his word.

Later on, was ready for a real setup, so hooked me up with a (then) popular Astro mod, which was actually a clone, 4 AW 18490 batteries & a Kangertech 2 ProTank (still single core), yet wow it hit a lot better. Later on, would then get my first box mod, an Eleaf 100W iStick. Would later purchase an extra, along with two Kangertech mini sub tanks, came with both 1.2 & 0.5 ohm coils, plus a little RBA that I never liked, learned how to rebuild the 0.5 ohm coil, since it had a larger holes & rebuilt horizontal rather than vertical, more flavor & easy to rewick after cleaning in place.

All of the above was within my first year, now over three years past that point, have lots of box mods & tanks (a couple of each still unopened), two sets of 18650 batteries for all, now into DIY e-juice, I have it made!

Perhaps the best of all for last. My health due to 37 years of analogs had taken a toll on my health, was using an asthma inhaler twice daily (Symbicort) for breathing, and carried a rescue inhaler. Has suffered bouts of pneumonia, along with plural fluid buildup in my right lung, was very painful.:(

Once I began vaping, within 2 weeks could tell the first difference, smelling the air and tasting food once again, within another week or two, my chest stopped hurting, so backed off of the Symbicort easily, dropping to one puff twice daily for a week, then quit altogether & for just in case, carried a rescue inhaler for awhile, although never needed it again.

In closing, I was finally free of a near lifelong habit, had I not met this kind man, there's a high probability that I'd not be here today. If you no longer enjoy your cigarettes (here we often call analogs;)), then give it up while you can. Not for me, nor for anyone else here, rather for yourself and your family. If you have children & grandchildren, I take it that you do want to see them grow up, and be able to go to activities w/out the need to drag an oxygen tank along, which is the final stage, out of all of those who I've known to have that setup, none are here today.:(

Sorry my post is so long, there's some things that can't be described in 2-3 sentences. Yes I know that someday, I'll pass away, yet hopefully it won't be from smoking related illness. In fact, I qualify for a no cost lung cancer screening where a low dose of radiation is used and am getting it done. Hopefully within 10 years, my chest will appear as though a non-smoker, that's my next goal to reach.:D

Good Luck & for yourself, simply don't purchase another pack of analogs. You can find the proper nicotine level to satisfy you until all of the cravings are gone, and like me, taper to 18mg or so after a few weeks, depending on how long you smoked & how much. The cool thing about vaping versus smoking is that the nic level is precise, if you're vaping 18mg (example), that's what you're getting. Analogs varies, even among the same brand, plus the fact that along with the smoke, there's over 2,000 (known) bad chemicals being inhaled with every puff. While I'm not going on the record to say that vaping has zero, it's highly reduced, otherwise my health wouldn't has improved by so much is so short of a time.:)

Keep up the good work & your head high, with a bit of willpower and the precise amount of nic you need, you'll never want another analog again.
