Why do I occasionally still smoke cigarettes even though I don't enjoy it?

vaping is not a magic bullet. You still need to work at quitting.
For some it is. There are people here who haven't had a cig since their first hit on a vape, but this is relatively unusual.

Most folks do go through a period of dual use. For me, it was less than a week. I never finished the pack I had opened just before my starter kit arrived. I still have several unopened packs from the carton I'd bought a few days before. I've never forbidden myself from having a cig if I really want one badly enough because I knew there was a part of me that would rebel against such a prohibition.

There are also folks who've never been able to give up that last one or few per day, and others still who've tried vaping and decided it's just not for them.

Bottom line: People are different. What works for one person may not work for the next. However, I do think that "Count and celebrate the ones you didn't smoke and don't beat yourself up over the few you do" is sound advice.

I'm the exact opposite, if it's there I'll light when my feet hit the floor first thing in the morning. I don't know if I could live with a smoker due to that and the smell.

I live with a smoker and find that the pleasures of her company offset the the occasional smoke smell..

vape gives you the nic... smoking gives you alot more interesting and addictive things other than nic.... if ciggies had just nic in them, then the patches, gum, inhalers etc would work 100% of the time...

yup there is still something about a cigarets

What I did, when I was transitioning, was I told myself I could have a cig whenever I wanted one . .. but with one condition:
I had to have a quick vape session first, and then see if I still needed that smoke right away, or if it could wait a while.

For me in particular, that worked really well. I wasn't always satisfied; but I almost never ended up having that cig.
Don't remember how long it took (til I wasn't smoking at all); but it was like, IDK, 5 days? . .. a week? Felt pretty quick at the time.

Also, I got kind of lucky (didn't feel that way at the time). A month or two into it, I had equipment failure, and reverted to smoking for a few days while the internet morphed into a mailman. That was when I learned about back-ups. But, smoking for those few days made it really clear to me that I would never again find pleasure in it. So, I never miss it, cause I know I don't like it any more.

Like others have said ..."something more than nicotine in cigarettes" I was a very heavy smoker at 3ppd and I knew I was going to need a high nicotine level to start. Wasn't easy to find 7 years ago so had to get it from China.
I researched for six months before I got my firsts kit and was so ready to quit the smoking.
What I noticed was that there seemed to be something else addictive in cigarettes other than the nicotine and the habit of hand to mouth. I didn't feel so great for a couple of days then bit by bit felt better now don't miss it at all.
So my suggestion is there is something else that has been missed or hidden regarding smoking other than the nicotine and habit. Just have to get past a few days.

The short answer to 'why' is that they put addictive chemicals in those things to keep you going for them! Or, perhaps you like the feel of the actual smoke in your lungs? (I'm being serious, as the person you "introduced" me to vaping still smokes, but he only smokes the organic ones with very few additives. He just can't give it up. At least he vapes at least 1/2 the time instead of smoking all the time...) But truly, you have to want to just quit. When I quit ages ago, I just made a decision and quit that day. It's a change in mindset. One day you'll just wake up and say "I'm done." no matter how you arrive at that, that's what has to happen.
