Why do people seem anxious for you to quit vaping, too?

I think that probably 9 out of 10 people on this planet are addicted to something. Whether it be coffee, cigarettes or the opposite sex. The judgement factor is where the problem lies.

Amen to that.

People think that you quit cigarettes because you hate nicotine. I personally love nicotine. I did, however, kick the carcinogens that are in analogs. It's causing no harm to me or anyone else at this point, so people have no reason to get indignant about my usage of a perfectly legal substance.

At first my Wife was all for me vaping, now a few months in I get the same questions "when are you gonna quit vaping?"
I just open the cupboard and show her all my vaping stock and say "does that answer your question, the first of never"

As others have said, it's the fact the vaping resembles smoking, people are hard wired in thinking that cos there's a visible emission it must be bad for you. A couple of times, when I've been feeling naughty, I've bamboozled the questioners with the science behind nicotine and vaping. But most times, I'll just ignore them. I'm at 24mg nic now and have been from the start, I've no plans on quitting vaping, I enjoy it too much :D

In my personal experience it's because people have some moral sense of righteousness about addiction.

Let me reserve any kind of comment about people who exhibit a "moral sense of righteousness" about the behavior of other people.
I just hope - for their sake - that such persons will never come close to me in real life.

I wrote my diploma paper on Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter". And such self-righteous Puritans have no place in my life.
Nor should they have a place in anybody else's.

well said indeed

I can remember quite a few years ago when everyone pretty much smoked. It was everywhere even in hospitals, dr offices etc. What has happened is a media campaign that probably rivals the big ag veg oil campaign of the 50's. Everyone is conditioned by this. Just look at how everyone thinks they are gonna have free healthcare. Not only that if you keep people uneducated by a system that is incompetent they are much easier to mold. Just throw more money at it.

I get that assumption that the progression should be to quitting vaping as well, even though I've shared facts about nicotine's actual addictiveness, presence in foods, medicinal uses, etc. It's irritating but I just kinda ignore people who think that way, it's none of their business. If I quit vaping, I quit; if I don't, I don't. I think, too, it's a judgmental, "moral" kind of thing....I see ALOT of comparable dependency/addiction by many people in our society to lots of things - and to make such statements about those would not sit well with other people. Unlike "some people" I just stay silent.... Live and let live; choose your battles; there are more important things to get upset about!

YES! I have taken to making it a learning moment explaining the actual dangers of nicotine on its own. Usually people just don't understand that the dangers of cigarettes on your health are not due to nicotine but the carcinogenic features of the hundred of other chemicals in cigarettes. Once I explain that nicotine on its own is more comparable with caffeine they are both shocked and back off.

However, the constant "so now your soooo close to kicking that habit", is seriously getting old.

You can say that again!
I have a colleague who has got decidedly weird... to any "normal" person. Taking up all kinds of "fashions" that are .. well "fashionable" around young professionals at the moment. This thing today, the next "fashionable" thing the next day. *yawn*
The other day, at lunch, he told about this marathon run that he had participated in. And about his buddy who came down with the stomach flu, but still decided to run the marathon. Went on about his buddy, who seems to have been seriously sick, still finishing the marathon... taking a long time.. but finishing it, with stomach cramps and feeling terrible. But finishing this marathon run. And how he was so proud of his buddy.
Duh.... I said nothing, but I see nothing whatsoever to be proud of, if you drag your body through some exhausting spare time pursuit if you are seriously ill. Talk about addiction.. yeah.... :p

My wife thinks I need to quit vaping. I guess my question is should I just divorce her now? Or do you think this is something that she can get used to? I know, hard to say without knowing her...

I like the part about quitting "the first of never."

I will likely quit vaping at some point in my life, who knows. However, it's not today, this week, this month, or even this year. I have way too much gear yet to acquire....what part of I'm not at break even yet do they not understand???

I pretty much agree with what everyone else has said already. I guess my question is "why is my quitting vaping so important to you?" I can totally see why not being greeted with "Congratulations on quitting smoking!" is annoying, like somehow I haven't quite completed my turnaround, rather than recognizing I just gave up the most addictive substance on Earth, and all the bad stuff was in the other stuff. Amen to the posts about the self-righteous folks.

Reminds me of the Churchill quote: “'You are drunk Sir Winston, you are disgustingly drunk. 'Yes, Mrs. Braddock, I am drunk. But you, Mrs. Braddock are ugly, and disgustingly fat. But, tomorrow morning, I, Winston Churchill will be sober.”

Anyway, just rambling now. Thank you for the post, welcome to the Forum, congrats on quitting [smoking], good luck, power up and vape on!

Hey there Tea,
Yep, most everyone not "vape educated" thinks it is some kind of lunatic fringe fad,
and they really want to make sure they reply with the "approved response for that".

They still do not think twice about their food additives,de-caffinated coffee, synthetic sweetners, fast food, etc....
cause it is "the norm" and and does not evoke a "Pavlovian conditioned response".

Get it all the time....."Congrats, but now you need to quit all together".....

Quit what?
Feeling better, better health, less doctor/hospital visits, less meds, more energy........

Have dropped down to 12mg level of nic,
feel better than I have in 40+ years and damn happy with the ride so far.

Most never thought twice about the analog in my face, cause it was a "known" vice......

Those uneducated about vaping and the benifits,......the final frontier :2c:

well i havnt had a stinky nasty tar analog in 8 months i still vape i started with a pack of blue's and now i have 3 different MODS, 6 18650 IMR batteries, Atttys, cartotanks, coil rebuilding acc, 2000 ml of PG/VG, 24 flavors all in 8 months so it looks like im not quiting and i love a 36mg blast of NIC. so when my family seen me with all this stuff they say i will never quit, i just say i feel 100 % better vaping then i ever did with analogs.

great question OP ... in my 49 days of non smoking I have also encountered those who say "when are you really going to quit? ... you are still hooked on nasty nicotine" ... I always reply, I have already reduced my nicotine in half, however, nicotine is not the killer in cigarettes.

I then say ... nicotine is not any worse than caffeine ... and lots of people drink coffee.

This one person said ... but I only drink de-caffeinated ... I then replied ... why do you even bother? ... you could just drink water instead

Almost everyone I know who knows that I've been doing this instead of analogs for a week has said the same thing: "Congratulations! That's awesome! Because now you can back down on the nicotine until you're not doing that any more, either, right?"

I've finally just taken to saying, "I'm not concerned with quitting nicotine." Because I'm not. And it seems many on this forum have vaped for years and are happy doing it. But people seem disappointed that I am not driving to "really quit" in THEIR eyes.

If I had to tell myself that I needed to cut down and quit THIS too, I'd be very discouraged. Quitting smoking is a VERY BIG DEAL for me, and I'm fine with it. No, more than fine - I'm ecstatic!

Do other people have the same experience with comments from others?

I have had the same conversation with alot of people about my cessation of smoking, I tell them all the same thing.

"I enjoy, and even can say I love to smoke and don't want to quit. If someone came out with a cigarette that was guarantee'd not to cause cancer or other side effects I would take it up again, but I also don't want to die of lung cancer, or offend my non smoking friends and family in social situations, or have my clothes and car, and house, and everything I own smell like an ash tray. I like to hear people say that it "smells good" or "that stuff your smoking is making me hungry".

If anybody ever tells you anything again, try asking them to stop drinking alcohol and replace it with water and see what reactions you get.

Might I borrow this one?

I too, am bombarded with the "when are ya gonna quit doing THAT then?".

Oh puleeze. As you said, Bill, why is it really so important to them? I think that's a place to go in those conversations (they're not really conversations, more of Tweets). "Would you like me more if I didn't vape? What impact would it have on you if I quit vaping?"

I see it this way: If I walk into a crowded room of acquaintances and tell them I've stopped smoking, I'd get a round of applause, some cheers, and a bunch of high fives.

Do any of you think that the same event would occur with me saying, "Hey! I quit vaping!" Yeah, no.

Depending on who it is, and my mood, I may be inclined to push back, with facts. Slowly, deliberately. :D

Welp, I push back too. "Why would I? To get back on cigarettes?" "I don't know.... I think next week." "As soon as you stop asking me. ;)"

My usual reply (when I don't really care to answer) is that I left my crystal ball at home.

Hi there HybridTea,

I just say
"I'll step down on the nicotine but im not going to stop vaping.
No need to. It smells good and you should try it! You really need a hobby."

1. I may or may not step down on the nicotine, and it may or may not be today, tomorrow,
next year, 5 years .....
2. They should get a hobby since they get nothing else better to do than be critical
about something they do not understand.
3. And they should try it since vaping IS really quite nice.

Mark,

I totally agree with you on that! Unfortunately my brother quit cold turkey and everyone in my family doesn't see vaping as quitting. I enjoy vaping more than I enjoyed the analogs. Now I stock up on ejuice and tanks.

I definitely will not be quitting even if I did eventually decide to lower my nic level.
