I don't think many US doctors know yet or have not had first hand experience with them. I had a little health scare in Aug and now, thanks to my previous smoking of analogs, I have a cartiologist and a neurologist, yea! I saw the cartiologist a couple wks ago, he had never heard of ecig but seemed open-minded. The neurologist had never heard of it but his resident had and he seemed bemused. I see my family doc next wk and I'm really anxious to talk to him about them. He's very cool and I am planning to bring my whole set up to show him how it works, etc, etc. I am really shocked that more people aren't using these babies. I quit from the very first vape and I plan on telling my doc how great they are. I think I can probably get him to try it. Hope so anyway.

English is not my mother tongue so forgive my spelling and punctuations, Second I am a real doctor not fake and there is resources about nicotine and PG and VG and Flavors separately but I would love form thebuss and other members who think that i may have agenda to point the resources that they are talking about when u combine all these components and burn them or heat them and then inhaling them , I would be very grateful if someone helped me find these resources .
we can talk about the toxic alkaloids in tobacco and its effect and the cancers or tumors and the tumor markers....etc but we cat talk much about e smoking, e smoking is new even to doctors and seeking info from e smokers is not a bad thing i guess .
thanks for everyone here but i guess i was miss-understood

Thanks for your post, and I am trying to understand e smoking in a better way and research it and spend more time to find more info about signs and symptoms that may be related to it.
And I will be very happy if e cig proven without a doubt to be Safer alternative and replacement and way to quiet smoking, but we need the proof without being biased, and we need to collect and share some data about what people feel or develop when they start e smoking and the timing of it .
also we need a lot of research and scientific results.

I have 2 people in my family who i love very much started e cig smoking so don't get defensive and think that i am all against it, (I am not with and not against it as of now), I am trying to get a better understanding of it and research it and i would love for it to be safe but i cant be biased. I need to be sure about its safety or to prove its not safe with evidence and without doubt.
with help from other people we can spot some sings and symptoms early and warn others or use it to investigate it more .

Warning the e smokers about some common symptoms that they may develop and could be serious, early diagnosis = early management = better outcome.
wish you the best health and wealth :)

It sounds to me like you have two people you can watch and take notes on as to adverse reactions and/or advantages. Have they stopped coughing up a lung every morning? Do they seem to breathe better? Get your stethoscope out and listen to their lungs while they take deep breaths. Ask them if they feel better. That will be more reliable information than anything we can tell you because you KNOW them. While we're an eager group to share the thrill and advantages we've experienced, first hand knowledge by observing someone who is vaping and comparing it to what you observed when they were smoking should give you something solid to report.

Dr. Sami is 99.9% a fellow Arab.. I am Arab American and I can tell easily.

Punctuation and grammar is not the issue here.. and we shouldn't even criticize him/his English language, the world does not speak English, parts of it do.

Dr. Sami, I'm not even going to ask where you are from because that is not what we're talking about here.. nor am I going to ask which hospital or clinic you work at.

As to the issue of your relatives vaping, don't you at least feel comfortable that they are not BURNING chemicals, paper, and tobacco? Isn't it COMMON SENSE that inhaling nicotine in vegetable glycerin is much much healthier than inhaling smoke as a result of combustion??

It's common sense brother, that one thing neither you, nor me, nor anybody else learns in college.

We're simply born with it.

OK
Phillip Morris? Really? OK, now I'm really confused... haha...nothing new.
Me thinks there are ALA and FDA people all over these boards anyway.

I agree, no question. My thoughts to exactly why these threads pop up. Boehner needs to try them. (a known chain smoker). BTW, I like him a lot. Great American, in my view.

its not uncommon of all of u guys who criticized my grammar and punctuations to see a doctor who don't speak English fluently, and its not hard to understand that we may suck in regular conversations and even pronouncing the words and may have a funny accents too but when it come to medical knowledge and clinical skills we stand strong, and Medical Terminology is different from regular chat or conversation.
I am sure in ur visits to the ER or OR or outpatient clinic u saw a lot of doctors just like me, But i promise i will work better on my English skills and grammar.
and I am sorry if I offended any of you for seeking more understanding about this subject and my desire to carry on a research that will help doctors and patients to understand it better in the lake of study or research to proof with evidence and solid results the actual effects of it.
I feel been attacked just because i care about the e smokers and want to understand the clinical settings, sings, symptoms that could be serious, and believe me there is some symptoms that u may find insignificant but medically it might be very serious.
I care about my relative who are e smoking now and i care about others and that's what made me search the net looking for info or research or labs on this subject and unfortunately i couldn't find anything to satisfy my medical knowledge.
its just a big fight between e smokers and FDA but based on what??? where is the study and where is the prove??? what ever they talked about wasnt solid and i mean both sides , that why i asked these questions, for e smokers who have been vaping for more than 2 or 3 years or recent vapors , signs an symptoms when they are common among these group of people can be significant and can give better understanding of the effects if there are any .
I thought since its not that common to see real vapors or e smokers in the clinical or social settings, I thought its a good chance to gain some understanding by talking to this forum community who have the largest e smokers numbers in different countries I ever seeen, couldn't find better place or bigger number.
I am done talking about this subject and i guess you are right, i will wait tell they do a good productive study on it and it may take years and years but its better to wait than to be attacked and accused for trying to understand and help.
peace and good health to All

I don't mind answering a few of your questions. I'm 51 yrs. old, and I smoked analogs, for 37 yrs. This past July, I came down with pneumonia, and they found a shadow on my x-ray. Well, that scared me enough to quit smoking. I started my PV on Aug. 25th, 2010. I ran out of cartomizers on the 8th of Sept. and had to smoke some analogs, until my order got here on Sept. 11th. Talking about getting high off of that first cigarette. That's so true, because I did.

Needless to say, I had been hurting so bad under my breast area, in my ribs, for years. After using the E-Cig, within a week, that pain was completely gone. Every morning, when I was smoking, I had a nasty cough that produced a lot of phlegm, especially in the mornings, when I woke up, and off and on through out the day. I no longer have that, either. Infact, I never coughed up anything, after I started vaping, like a lot of the other vapers say they did. The only time I cough now, is if I take in a long vape, off of my PV, or my throat is dry, from not drinking enough fluids. I have not started exercising, because my thyroid levels, at the moment are off, and my doctor just changed my medication. My thyroid is causing me to be extremely tired. Besides that, I can't stand to be around my husband, who is still a smoker, because the smell is just plain awful. My sense of smell is definately much better, I guess.

After they found that shadow, on my lung, I was to return for another x-ray, 10-12 weeks, later, which was last week. Unfortunately, they did find a nodule on my lung, and I have to go back, for a CT Scan this coming week. I know that after 37 years of smoking, it was to be expected, so I'm just waiting to see what the results are going to be on that, but I'm so thankful for the E-Cig, because I had tried everything to quit, but didn't have the will power to do it, until I found this incredible product.

Dr Sami, thanks for the explanation. No offence intended over the comments about your punctuation, but I genuinely had trouble understanding your first post. Sorry about that :)

I have been vaping since September or October 2008. Went back to smoking for about 2 weeks this year (stressful time) but have quit again. To answer your questions:

how do u compare your health and well being since u started e cig with previous regular smoking ??? Much better I think. No coughing. Lost weight (I don't put that down to vaping alone but my exercise level has increased a lot). It is important to increase liquid intake with vaping due to the PG/VG, which have a dehydrating effect.
any of u had a CT scan or MRI done since they started E cig smoking and for what reason?? No.
do u breath deeper and did u lose the morning cough and sputum? Yes. Morning cough disappeared within a few weeks. Sputum production cleared after a month or two. Lung peak flow readings improved although I can't give exact figures at this moment.
do u exercise better and feel less weak and fatigue since u shift to e cig? Yes. I run several miles every other day, and work out at the gym. I had trouble running a few hundred meters prior to quitting smoking.
do you feel healthier ??? Yes I think so. Sense of taste and smell has returned as well.
any other GI or Skin or Cardiovascular or CNS symptoms since u start ?? Dry mouth at first. As per above increase liquid intake to combat this. People have said my skin tone has improved although I have not noticed it myself.

A solitary pulmonary nodule can be benign and can be malignant and I hope its a benign lesion for you and that you gonna be just fine in God well.

is it rounded opacity less than or equal to 3 cm in diameter that is completely surrounded by lung parenchyma??? did ur doc tell u ??
a lot of pulmonary nodules are benign, but they may represent an early stage of lung cancer.

I don't think its related to the E cig, its much more related to the 37 years of heavy smoking but I hope its benign lesion and I hope ur CT scan or Biopsy comes out negative for serious things.

Best wishes of Good Health Flowerlady

This one is for Dr. Sami,

how do u compare your health and well being since u started e cig with previous regular smoking ??? Much better I think. No coughing.
I've been a heavy smoker for 5 years, I started going to the gym at school and felt ashamed that I'm only 26 years old and cannot run for 5 minutes straight. I felt terrible.. So I decided to try the electronic cigarette.. That was a year and a half ago.

any of u had a CT scan or MRI done since they started E cig smoking and for what reason??
Nope.. Never had an MRI or a CT scan, but will have one done in a month or two. Reason: I want to see how my body is functioning after quitting smoking.

do u breath deeper and did u lose the morning cough and sputum?
YES!! I breath much deeper!! and feel like I get more oxygen out of every breath.. My breathing has IMPROVED DRAMATICALLY... and I feel it's STILL IMPROVING..

do u exercise better and feel less weak and fatigue since u shift to e cig?
Yes, I do exercise. I run on the treadmill non-stop on varying intensities, but I can run ONE FULL HOUR while changing the intensity between high and low.

do you feel healthier ???
YES.. 100% HEALTHIER!! AND STRONGER, AND MORE ENERGETIC AND FOCUSED!

any other GI or Skin or Cardiovascular or CNS symptoms since u start ??
ABSOLUTELY NONE!

sdh :
is your ulcers are minor ulcers (2-7 mm) small and heal within a week or 2 if thats the case then these ulcers most likely the minor ulcers which is the most common about 70% of the cases but i cant tell for sure based on ur description.
or Major ulcers which is deeper and leave scaring and need more weeks to heal?
are they round, or oval, what color? painful or painless?
stopping smoking as you know can cause ulcers its much more of a reaction of ur body to the chemicals and toxins u used to inhale with the regular cigarettes but there is so many types of ulcers need to be differentiated ? it can vary from not significant to cancer.

i would love to ask you to describe the (pimples under my lower lip)??? size, color , pain,?
I am not trying to diagnose or treat anyone here I am just trying to understand the situation and the symptoms.
I will try to replay to all posts when i can and have time :)?
keep me posted by answering the questions to help us understand what exactly happening.
as for the allergy i would talk with my doctor to do a patch test for allergy and include the component of the e juice in it and it can be done with the help of your doc and the lab if they can or if its possible .
The mouth ulcer was at the very begining when I used 100% vg and not knowing how to use a vaporizer. I also obtained the same results from experimenting with those little snus packs one places in the mouth. I have an ultra sensitive mouth and when one places nicotine for buccal absorbtion it can burn the tissue. I am speaking only of myself. I did get allot of e-liquid in my mouth from being a newbie. So this is an effect that I caused. I had my dentist look at it and it went away within one week. I have no signs of oral cancer. The pimples are just that. I don't drink enough fluids and I live in Wisconsin. It is very dry. Subconciously I hold the vaporizer in my mouth and believe some nicotine may be hitting the lower mouth. (Also I may be licking my lower lip).
I don't have time to do an allergy test right now. I am researching autonomic disorders. Good luck on your research.

Personally, life is a matter of risk and chance. I smoked 20 years darn well knowing the risks, I chose to lessen the risk but moving to e-cigs and so far I feel much better. I need a physical in the next few months to renew my FAA PPL so I'll see the goings on then. I ride a motorcycle with close to 200hp, drive a car with about 700hp, and even jump out planes from time to time, although not while flying, my insurance wouldn't like that, and I like e-cigs. These are all my personal choices.

I still think that senior Sami doesn't quite get the concept of e-cig and should do a bit more research before continuing. Heating up a liquid to a point where no reaction occurs is no different than consuming this liquid at room temperature. If steam more toxic than water? Is bees wax more toxic than ingesting it hot, aside from burns? So long as there is no reaction, chemical otherwise, there should be no difference in ingestion between these states Yes I know there is more to it, but this is basic principles. While not much is known about the long term effects of e-cigs, I think your time would be better spent doing research into the independent chemicals than blind subjective questioning. This order of things is how hysteria forms. While you're at it perhaps ambulance chasing after fog machines would be appropriate as well.

Papa Lazarou

its okay and I understand your comment.

Thanks for answering the questions :) and yes PV/VG cause dry nasal passages and oropharynx and its a good practice to increase your water intake, and try to drink before and after u vap. VG can coat ur throat with a fine film and even though I don't know of any studies to show if this film gonna affect you badly but increasing ur water intake to at least the normal which said to be ( minimum for a healthy person is eight to ten eight-ounce glasses a day" gonna help
regular smokers are advised to increase their water intake as well.
smoking can make some have harsh voice and we advice people who quiet smoking to drink more water and reach a good hydration status which is essential for proper functioning of the vocal cords and that help your voice as well.
water is life :)
it help also your lung tissue to stay moist for better gas exchange.
i wish you the best and thanks again
