Why Even Call It a Cigarette?

I see a lot of ECF members calling our little machines PVs for "Personal Vaporizers" and I see the wisdom in that. Just a few bullet points. I think we need a vocabulary make-over.

* Gimmie an E! - One of the main things that kept me away from trying VPs was the gimmicky "E". Of course it's "electronic" dear, most things are these days. Besides, I feel silly checking my e-mail on my e-reader while "e-smoking" my e-cigarette.

* Cigarette - First off, it sounds French. :) Seriously though, since it involves abolutly NONE of the components or mechanics of a cigarette, why call it one? I really think continuing to do so serves no purpose, and gives the ANTZ a fairly valid argument (debate-wise).

*EVF- Sounds almost exactly like ECF, but looks better and, does not promote cigarettes on a sub-conscious level.

*Smoke Gets In Your Eyes (but not from a PV) - While I find the new half-verb "vape" annoying, I think it is much more accurate. I just go ahead and use the whole verb. The point is, I'm NOT smoking, so, no matter what kind of nonsense ANTZ want to spew, I QUIT SMOKING.

I'm sure most "vapers" (hey, wasn't that a 80's new-age band?)... I'm sure they could personally not care less what it's called, but I really believe changing the nomenclature would go a long way toward improving public opinion about PV's.

I thought this one had been done almost to death in previous posts.

Whether you call it your Personal Electronic Nicotine Inhaler System, your Steamer, Vaporizer, Inhaler, Puffer, Pacifier, Electro-......, Electro-..., your chupon (Mexican Spanish for a baby´s pacifier, as one student of mine called it), whatever...

Please, just don´t mention 'smoking' or 'cigarette' (or even 'cigaret').

As others have said before, perception is everything in our struggle for acceptance and giving the antis any excuse to tar us with the same brush as users of the 'evil weed' terbacker is just going to damage the long-term cause of harm-reduction.

+1 on that post

I recently saw some videos posted on here from msnbc where their news shows were actually discussing how silly it was that the Obama administration was going to try to ban e-cigs from planes. The reasoning they said it was even there, that e-cigs looked like cigarettes. That was the reason for the ban. To me, posts like this are doing the EXACT same thing as people who want them banned everywhere. These posts say "We shouldn't call it a cigarette cause people will think it's a cigarette". The people who want them banned are saying "it looks like cigarette smoke, so I think it's a cigarette, so it should be banned". Go ahead and give power to the ANTZ. You're just pulling the same stunts they are.

As far as I am concerned the term e-cigarette is a marketing or sales term...It is not a cigarette at all..

You are correct. But because that's what it's been marketed as and has become known by, that's what it's always going to be called whether anybody's personal preference likes it or not. A rose by any other name and all that stuff....

Unfortunately, most people have only heard of these things in (mostlly ripoff) ads. They are trying to sell smokers. So, calling it an e-cigarette works for them. What I use bears no resemblance to a cigarette but, in order for people to know what it is, I have to say it's an e-cigarette every time.

Apple should get into this business. Look, I got an Icig! Goes great with my Ipad and Iphone!

Except for you'd be paying $600 for an e-cig that is only compatible with their old fashioned atomizer/cartridge system that is setup so you can only use those pieces, no dripping or other brand cartomizers or any customization allowed. Don't worry though, they'll get to the point of the ego and others some day. Right now they're releasing the 220 mah icig. In 3 months, for another $600 you can get a 280 mah icig-e. Then in another 3 months you can get a 360 mah icig-es, etc etc etc. Some time in 2012 they'll release the i-cig2 for $900 which can be used with the newest accessory, the 1 ml i-carto for $60 (only compatible with the i-cig 2). Then 3 months later the icig-e for $950 and the 1.5 ml i-carto for $65. Then.....in 2015.....the .5 ml i-tank, compatible only with the i-cig 3!!!!
