My home is on land I don't own, it is rented land. I can plant a garden, but I can't fence it off the way I would like to. The local raccoons, armadillos, rabbits and whatever else is out there will steal the food, dig it up whatever. I also don't think I have the strength any longer to really tend to a garden of edibles. My ex-husband did that kind of thing and it took a lot of work. I would do it if I was healthy to save money, but I can't imagine sitting in the sun for 5 minutes once it warms up. I hate it. If the house was bigger I could do a few indoor plantings but we have little space. My room is a very medium size room, filled up with furniture I won't get rid of, I could never get it again.

I would actually love to switch houses with my Roommates brother, his house is more than 2x the square footage, he never moved into it and stayed there for 5 days in a year. We paid the same thing for the houses. He has more land and a fenced yard.

I'm lazy. Narrow raised beds, layer newspaper with soil (and trimmings) over and over again. The newspaper keeps out the weeds and worms like it. Chicken wire cover and as long as your at it, get a couple of hens to eat the bugs. Sell fresh eggs. Backyard chickens are big now so every town allows them. I just came from the asian store. Dragonfruit is $5.99/lb. Ouch. One plant can produce about 60lbs per year and I know they grow in Fl. That's what I was going to do is sell odd ball fruits and veggies that mega stores don't carry / sell seedlings. Low overhead, cash based part time biz. I found an agrucultural site (.gov) that sent out free seeds for tobacco. I had to make up some mumbo jumbo about doing it for research in the home garden type thing and got a bunch. LOL! That was going to be my front yard. tobacco plants are pretty. The scent from blooms is heavenly. I had no trouble growing nicotiana.

I don't find anything wrong with living in a one-light town. There's no crime to speak of, housing is affordable, and many of the amenities are here--grocery store, gas station, a couple of good restaurants. The only time I really need my car is to shop for clothes, and visit with family.

I grew up about an hour away from the border. I can't count how many times I tried to be Canadain. I still feel more Canadian than US. This was BC. A glass of beer will always be a schooner.

Plantains are the ones you are thinking of. Where I live there are practically no Cuban's, hardly any Hispanics at all, its really strange. There are very few ethnic groups living in the area. A small community of Greeks in Daytona, not many others that I have seen. So the ethnic food markets that I used to frequent in S. FLorida, are not present here at all. Of course there are fish markets, and regular supermarkets, I even found an oriental market in the next town over. but it's not like other places I have lived.I can eat most fruits, and veggies, if it looks weird I am wary but I would always try it at least once.

Thanks to the internet, there's a reciepe for everything now. I tend to avoid areas that are "bright white".

I grew up less than 1 hour from NYC., I would go from my home to the city on the weekends and spend time at museums, different cultural events, plays, etc... Now that I am stuck in the house, it may not seem important, but I like a mixture of the city life to visit and the suburban to country life to live in. I could never afford to move back to the NYC area, it is cost prohibitive. But I still have a need to know, if I could afford it and figure out the physical part of it, I want to be able to go out and enjoy it.

A one light town would be fine as long as it's close enough to a place that I can enjoy the sites. It doesn't have to be expensive, or require me to be dressed to the nines, just cultural; ballet, orchestras, opera, art and history museums, and parks etc..... I hope to find it somewhere.

It's just stuff, I can always try to get it again, or not. You can't take it with you and if you do who's going to see it?

Yep, I hear ya girl. There was a time that I had money, bought super-nice clothes from Nordstrom's, and had a reason to do it, because I had a job that required dressed-up appearance. I confess, I bought more than I needed. This turned out to be good, because now I've sold most of my clothes on consignment, and made some good money (after of course researching shops) - saved my bacon for more than a few months.

Like you said. Stuff is stuff. Times changes, our needs change. Yesterday's high fashion becomes today's toilet paper. This is a critically important life lesson!

It's LIVE!

The class on coil building I mentioned a long time ago. This guy is supposed to be awesome. I think it's the 11:30 EST class that's live. The 3pm may be a rebroadcast. You should be able to ask questions as if you were there. This is the first time though...

OPV Coil Building Class on Livestream

I already warned him some pretty chilly folks might be showing up (ok to advertise). The idea came up in a Tucson Vapers meet, so I'm kinda proud they pulled it together.

Would a 35-minute drive be too far? That's how close I live to entertainment (museums, live theatre, fine dining, etc.)

There's 2 malls within 5 minutes. A Wal Mart super center and a strip mall in the edge of town. Some great restaurants a few of which were featured on the travel channel and food network. I scored valentines reservations at one last year and again for this year :thumb: It's a town of about 2000 totally flat in a valley surrounded by mountains. Everyone knows me and Jazz actually got bumped ahead of 3 or 4 people at the garage last week ;) Almost no crime and low taxes. 100 miles from Philly, 45 minutes from Hershey, an hour from Harrisburg or Scranton. 3 hours to Manhattan or Baltimore.
The drawback is the coal dirt. It's everywhere. Can't keep cars or windows or even your house clean. There's some luxury items you can't get like pate or faux gras. But groceries are reasonable and you can actually buy freshly butchered meat or even half a steer if inclined.
I love small town life :)

Small town life is great, huh? Don't have to worry about coal dirt, though. I'm living in a farming town. The closest mine to me is a salt mine, about 25 minutes west of me.

as long as its not clay dirt (the red crap that stains everything!) im fine with. there are several local butchers near me where i can buy a whole animal to be cut, or pay part of the upkeep fees for the baby animal until its ready to be cut and that would be my costs. my parents used to do that until out garage was full of meat.. they would pay the upkeep costs of a cow, then when its cut we would let the butcher keep the parts we didnt want (he loved those parts.. cow toungue?) and would sell the unwanted meat and give us whatever was excess of what we paid to upkeep the cow.

Top, that is how I thought it was going to work where I live. I was mistaken. We are surrounded by cattle quite close by, but there are no butchers to be found in the area, or fresh local meat. There are horse farms too. Maybe up in Nashville somewhere but not here. There are some local vegetable stands and a Farmer's Market in town but they are priced as high or higher than the supermarkets and a fair portion of the food is shipped in. They do not have bakeries out here like I grew up this back east either. People buy the stuff made from mixes at the supermarkets, in general.

I was horrified the first time I saw a supermarket deli here scoop reesers out of a carton into a bowl behind a "deli" counter. Before that every deli I'd seen was like a takeout resturant even in the grocery. That was up in phoenix and there it was hard to find a mom and pop resturant for lunch. I think I know of 2 out of several thousand. They even closed down a major section of town with a lot of small funky stores, promised upgrades, then reopened with all chain stores. Did that near the university. Turned it into a ghost town. Who wants to drive to a Crate and Barrel when it's easier and cheaper to shop online? Stupid. Idk, not having a choice of anything but BIG chains has really put me off from ever shopping there. One side of town has a Walmart every mile. Imbetween it's empty strip malls. I kid you not. It's out of a Sci Fi movie. Very eerie. There's a haze everywhere.

I agree with you aikanae1. It is very eerie and very creepy what's going on. It is like this here too. We used to have amazing orchards and gardens here, now... box stores and strip malls. Sad! Big Corp is here. They want to wipe out the small farmer. So we are dependent on them...only. One word comes to my mind here... Monsanto.
This is happening everywhere. I fear for the younger generations. Very few people speak up.
