Lots of classic rock and early metal players name Reinhardt as one of their influences. Even if they don't know who he is, they have a chain back to him through other players that took the influence in different paths.

I like bursts of rapid fire licks, but the soul of the solo still lies in communicating licks that produce emotion reactions in the player and the listener. I'm also a fan of Fink Floyd and David Gilmour. Gilmour can incite emotions with his use of bends and rakes that keep him in the lists of great guitar players.

Yngwie Malmsteen? I'm sure you've seen this video then:

Yngwie Malmsteen guitar lesson

Hahaha, no I havent. From what I hear he's a bit of a d-bag. People use the term "shred" way too often, but when I thingof "shredding" I think of Yngwie.

I forgot Steve Vai, my bad. He's a cool dude, I've met him before. Hearing him improv random stuff is like hearing god play guitar

Way, way back, nearly 100 years ago, there was a man named Roy Smeck. He was probably the world's first virtuoso guitarist. He also played banjo, uke, and "Hawaiian" steel guitar. There are some clips of him on youtube, but I haven't found any of him playing guitar. He's shown playing everything else but the six string. He was known as "The Wizard Of The Strings". Gibson even had some Roy Smeck model guitars. Unfortunately for him, he also thought he was a comedian, so some of his work was of a non serious comical nature. Today, he is all but forgotten.

When you have the ability to play fast it opens up another aspect of mastering the instrument. It allows the musician to do more with the instrument and the music. It also shows good acomplishment; speed comes with practice.

That's just dandy as long as you are your main audience.
As a medium of communication to others what are you trying to say?
Music as the language of emotion allows for damn near everything because it's supposed to go beyond the reach of words.
"Wow! That dude can play fast!" misses the point to a great extent, although not entirely.

good stuff on this post... .tons o fun... i get Chet Atkins of course and Django and Bob Wills and BB on this number.

i play jazz licks on my tenor uke (custom made for intonation, action, ust pickup) 'cause i can't handle six strings... seriously... always need rhythm comp though.
I like to run some pro solos through software that slows it down and learn 'em.
thanks all.
