My brother started limbering up last week. His biggest challenge these days is deciding which style to go with. He has everything from Olde English longbows to hi-tech magnesium compounds with overdraw systems... I like weapons and systems, he likes killing with whatever is handy. Lucky for him, he has the disposable income to buy just about everything that becomes 'handy'. He's a better shot than me too... jerk. :D

I'm not much of a hunter myself. I can't eat anything if I've seen it's eyes...
However, my Dad was a bow hunter. I don't remember him actually bringing home any meat - but he really looked forward to going off for a few days with his bow. Now that he's gone, I wish that I'd been able to go with him at least once...but back "in my day" Dads didn't take their girls hunting...

They have an adult/youth hunt here in Georgia on one of the WMA's. Last year the guy I hunt with brought his little daughter, but she couldnt shoot only being 5 yrs old. She loved being out there with us though and a couple weeks ago she said she was ready for hunting season to start. It will probably be another 6 years or so before she can go through the hunters class required before she can actually hunt, but she still likes to get out in the blind and spend time with her daddy.

OK AR fans...I am really trying to like the AR platform, I really am. The .223/5.56 round is my biggest complaint with the standard AR. I did find out a while ago that there was a 7.62x39mm upper available, and last night on gunownersclub.com there was a 45acp upper offered up for sale/trade. And seeing that beltfed automatic 12ga, I am now intrigued. I have seen a 22 conversion kit as well. Anyone have a good website to go to to see the different uppers available? With all of these uppers available, do they all fit on the same lower? How hard are they to change? Is it something you could do in the field? Has anyone used the different uppers to see if they were reliable or not? I have heard that the 7.62x39mm upper is a ..... to get to function right, but have also heard that it works flawlessly. Is it a pipe dream to think that one weapon could reliably work with a bunch of different uppers? Help me like this entire platform.

I've chewed up a few deer with a 5.56. The damage inside was considerable for the distance of one of the kills( about 150yards). I've seen deer run farther after being shot with a 30-06 lol.The 5.55 is not a perfect round by far. It kind of is what it is. But it's lethal enough imo. That, and if need be, a man can haul quite a bit of this particular ammo. But you could make the same case for 7.62x39. I've plugged deer with a ruger mini 30 also. Does a good job as well.

I won't say 'fan' but...

They have quite a few different conversions available. Most of the problems associated with caliber conversions have to do with magazine issues. If the magazine doesn't line up right (as with any weapon), you'll have problems. There are plenty of pistols out there that wouldn't feed or fire properly that had the problem solved with a magazine swap!

Personally, I feel the .223/5.56 NATO round is the AR platform's strongest point though. It's the most accurate of the assault rifles that employ it and to be honest, it's kind of a waste to buy an AR to shoot 7.62x39 when you already have so much experience (and ownership) of an SKS. The thousand dollars would go a long way towards accuracy enhancement. You know, Red Jacket just sniper-ized an AK...

It comes down to effective range really, the .223 has legs and the 7.62x39 is almost identical to a 30-30 so it's a brush gun. Buy the AR for it's accuracy with the .223, it's the only saving grace!

I was really excited to see the 45acp more than anything. I have been looking for a carbine that uses 45acp, something like the Keltec sub2k or the Hi point 995. Both just use either the 9mm or the 40 cal, both of which I dont use anymore. My 40's and 9's have either been sold or swapped and I use just the 45acp now. I know they have a tommy gun that uses the 45acp, but to be honest, once you get past the "cool" factor for 5 minutes, its a cumbersome weapon. I did, like I said in an earlier post, contact Keltec to see the possibility of them doing a 45acp version, preferably with SAXD45 magazines. Another option I have been kicking around is to contact Sons of Guns and see the possibility of custom making a carbine that uses the XD mags, shoots 45acp, and will fold up like the Keltec Sub2K, but honestly, I dont have the money for a custom gun.

Once i saw that the AR had the 45acp upper, I started to think that maybe I could have one lower that does it all- 45acp (to match my handgun), 22lr (for practice and plinking) .223/5.56 (cause ammo will be plentiful) and of course 7.62x39mm (which is my favorite round). The main thinking I had was one lower and multiple uppers, means many weapons at a low weight.

The biggest problem, is money. Like you said, the uppers aint cheap. I did do a little research and found that the AR15 had the following upperscopied from AR15.com forum:

Q: How many calibers can I get uppers that fit my .223 (AR-15) lower? What are they?
A: While the list is nearly endless with all the wildcats possible. Here are the some of the more common and more interesting uppers that are (or have been) produced for the standard AR-15 lower:

I know a couple of ya are planning on using a compound bow as one of your silent weapons. The downside to the bow is the cost of broadheads. I think I found a good solution to stock pile broadheads without breaking the bank:
eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices
For the cost of 3 lower end broadheads, you can have 40 broadheads that you use with your practice field tips. Not sure how well they work, but for such a cheap price to get so many, might be worth looking into.

That's pretty awesome! Just for the legal disclaimer. While a 'sawed-off' BLACKPOWDER shotgun isn't illegal on the federal level, always check state and local laws before performing the procedure or purchasing one! It's never a good idea to show up with one unless you are 100% positive that you've covered your posterior. Nothing like a criminal weapons charge to take the fun out of gun ownership... permanently in some cases.

With that being said. I'd love to have one!

An M31 is just another tube gun. Thehard part to do a BATFE compliant build is that it can't accept the full-auto bolt and fire control group. easiest way to do this is to cut your receiver from slightly smaller diameter DOM tubing. Turn the bolt to fit and drill for a spring-loaded floating firing pin, and then actuate it all with an off-the-shelf AR-15 fire control group. Then you get a nice, legal hi-cap pistol...or SBR, or however you choose to configure it.
