I love the damned thing but it has been giving me some problems. When I change the batteries it works about 60% of the time. I have to adjust the atomizer and the batteries and I still can't exactly figure out why it won't work sometimes. A few times when it doesn't work, I'll feel heat coming from the bottom of the handle, near the springs. I'll open the battery compartment and notice that the bottom battery is blazing hot. In fact, I thought it was going to explode so I took it outside. This happened 3 times with 3 different batteries.

The only thing I notice is that resistor looks cooked as it has turned brown, shrunk and smells funny. Otherwise all the solder joints are intact and don't appear to make any contact with the body.

My 510 adapter froze halfway on and I tried everything from my teeth to pliers to remove but to no avail. I was able to screw it down completely but unable to remove it. It was stuck half way. Unfortunately, I had to destroy it by taking a Dremel grinder to it to get it removed.

Reading through this thread I now know that I should've pre lubricated it but what do you think the deal is with the connection? Is there a short somewhere causing the batteries to heat up? Any suggestions would be radical. Thanks.

My problems:

It is difficult to change adapters due to the threading. In fact my 510 adapter froze on it and I tried everything from my pliers to my teeth to remove it. In fact, I had to destroy the adapter because the only way to get it off was to grind it into several pieces.

I don't know what causes this but it has happened a few times. I'll change batteries after using my Prodigy with no problems after a couple of hours and suddeny it doesn't work. I'll notice heat from the bottom of the Prodigy near the springs though and I'll open up the battery compartment and the bottom battery is burning up. So much so that I'll take it outside because I'm afraid that it'll explode. I also haven't tried to recharge them yet either (this has happened to 2 batteries).

I know there is no fix for the threading but would could be causing the short? I do notice that my resistor looks like it's been cooked as it has shrunk, discolored brown and looks burned.

When the Prodigy does work though, it's a really good PV. Any suggestions would be radical. Thanks.

Yikes, now that is scary!

4)This was placed by ecig manufactures as an evil ploy to destroy the world...

When using an 801 (penstyle) atomizer, some forum members including but not limited to CaSh and Walrus "tailpipe" or use the e-cig without a mouthpiece or cart.

Hi Ruuku.........you are toooo funnnnny!!!:lol::lol:
See I am paying attention! lololol
So many of you members are gifted with a tremendous sense of humor. And I thank God for that, for when I am in my most frustrated place & search the forum for answers.....at least I end up laughing & sometimes to the point of tears as things are so funny. Thank you for that!

Wow, tail-piping.....does that mean that they put their lips around the atty only? Now that is truly brave. Are they some sort of special SWAT team sort of tough people. lolololol see, I can't make the same funnies as most of you, but at least I am trying. yes? no?

Thank you so very much about the details. I was under the impression, when they talk about the batteries costing 2 cents (up here there is no such price) that they were referring to store bought. hmmmm, maybe the store bought batts are for a different model. Being still new, I do get them all mixed up. I was watching youtube ecig videos & I thought for sure that I saw a model with store bought batts. hmmmm.

God Bless you one and all for taking the time to educate us, so that we have a better experience.

I have just had the same problem as you my the bottom of my Unit was getting hot >pulled the batteries and the bottom one was extremely hot (so hot i couldn't handle it ) this is the first time experiencing this .I do occasionally have the same issue with it working after a fresh battery change i will have adjust the atomizer and the batteries to get it to work again .I have had to do the adapter fix in the beginning and have removed the plastic from the bottom of the batteries .I haven't tried another battery yet

ps: using a 901 set up

help needed also

OK, that's two people with extremely HOT battery problems. This is scary! Can someone who know what might be going on chime in?

I'm getting one soon (in the mail) and sure don't want it exploding on me.

Hey Guys ....

Last Night ... We finally determined what could be making the resistor/batteries hot NOT including the adapters.

If you are using a shorted atomizer (an atomizer reading 0 ohms) This will cause the batteries to heat up and the resistor to get hott.

An easy way to tell:
There is a small silicone gasket on the post of your atomizer ... Its a clear round thing. If this is gone = DO NOT USE THE ATOMIZER ... If its still there, the atty is likely not shorted, and we can look to another possible issue = The adapter.

nbaagain - If you pull the switch housing out of the tube, and look at the resistor ... what color is it?

F4u5t -- yours sounds like the atomizer shorting ... can you check your atty for me :)

Right now I'm using a 901 atomizer on my Screwdriver. Put my super magnifiers on (hey, when you get old you learn all kinds of tricks :D), turned on my high powered Ott Light looked in my atty and I can see the dome of the metal mesh piece that I try and drip on, a circle of SOLID white that looks like a ceramic material encircling this dome of metal mesh, then I see a little squiggly piece of metal going from side to side under the metal mesh dome with a teeny tiny round piece of what also looks like ceramic attached to the end of this squiggly piece of metal, but no clear round thing. Hey Steve if you can use technical terms like "thing" then I can use squiggly, teeny tiny, etc. :D:D I'm glad you did because by the time you used the term "resistor" I was lost. :D

Sharon, if I'm correct you shouldn't even need magnifiers and extra lighting. I believe when he says post, he's not talking about the little center hole, but the large round upraised flat area. Like a rubber gasket around the base of that. All the attys I checked visually had one. Clear on some, white on others. May be why I haven't been having any problems.

Of course that was after giving up on trying to turn on DHs multimeter and then going cross-eyed trying to figure out why on even new attys there wasn't anything obvious in the little hole. I may be wrong, I don't know, but that's what I'm thinking.

Oh Mom, I'm sorry, but you just gave me the biggest smile. First, believe me, extra added magnifiers help in most situations now a-days. Second, can you imagine if I was trying to look into that teeny tiny hold on the end of the atty that screws into the battery, ROFL, that would be a trick if I could have seen all I posted through that tiny hole.

Back to the point in question, yes, looking through the large opened end of the atty, I see the round solid white, ceramic looking ring that is sort hugging the metal sides of the atty. Then inside that is the raised metal dome where we try and drip. Under the metal dome is what I guess you'd call a filament wire with a tiny round ceramic looking disk.

I took unit apart earlier. i to notice the brownish tint on my resistor and had the same electric burning smell when this originally happened .
i Then put unit back together with another fresh set of batteries an it immediately got hot as soon as cap was tightened ( no vaporizer on unit )

I have looked at all my vaporizers and they do have the silicone gasket as described (verified by looking at a new one) ,i then tested them on a regular 901 PT they all work fine

i was trying to take a pic but my camera sucks

Hmmm, no I'm looking at the other end. Like I said, I could be wrong, but I think that's where they are talking about. The battery end.

I did think man I need to get me some of those for when I'm sewing if she can see that much detail through that little hole though. LOL

Oh Mom, you're great! If you find glasses that allows us to see that much through a teeny tiny hole like that PLEASE let me know, I too need those.

And other than that, the only comment I can make is "Well I'll be". Put my magnifying glasses back on, turned the Ott light back on, looked at the battery end and lo and behold, what do I see but a clear plastic little gasket encircling the raised area around that teeny tiny hole. :D:oops:

Guess it just takes me a while Mom. LOL

F4 ... You were an original tan, so a sliced adapter would likely be the cause ...

Can you flip the adapter over and tell me if you see Delrin (the black plastic) in between the center pin and the outside thread?

Having same problems as F4, all gaskets are intact. Delrin is visible around the center pin and outside thread.

Oh my gosh, please nbaagain, do NOT tell me that's your battery? Is this thing going to blow up in our faces?

That is truly scary! Or am I being truly stupid here? What is that blue thing that looks like it burnt and melted in the middle? Is it suppose to look like that?

haha ... Sharon ... It won't blow up. It just gets warm or extremely hott if you decide to hold the button for a long period of time.

here are pictures i just took guys ... About to make a thread on it so we can get Adapters replaced, and so when you know not to use a certain atomizer.

Hopefully this helps explain some things :)

OK, thanks. Now you know why I have such respect for people like you that know what these things are, what to look for and especially because you're kind enough to put up with people like me! :D:oops:

I've bookmarked this page and will keep it for reference! Sure appreciate all the time you spend with us and with people like me that know so little and understand even less!

The atomizer short had me stumped. All the thanks goes to DW, Spikey, and tvujec ... Combined and over the span of a couple days ... finally figured out what was shorting when the adapter looked in tact :)

appreciate the kind words Sharon!
