So, I've been experiencing an odd phenomenon with my solid wicks. After just a few days use, they simply refuse to wick properly anymore. I'm running a 4/3 wrap of 28g kanthal with primarily a 50/50 blend juice. Am I getting VG buildup on the inside of the wick? Seriously considering moving to straw wicks again if this keeps up.

This EXACT thing just happened to me, and was searching this thread to see if there were any wisdom from the vets here.

Running a DID clone, solid 500 mesh wick, 32awg Kanthal, about 2ohm coil (4/5 wrap I believe), 50/50 juice (HHV Legend).

Built the coil/wick on Saturday, nice even coil heating, getting vapor with no hotspots... I was excited as I was getting an outstanding vape.

Suddenly, yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon, started to detect a bit of a burnt taste and the top coil was hot. Thought it was a hotspot/short, but if I hold down the button with the cap off, all the coils slowly go all red and vapor production stops. It's clearly just not wicking anymore.

If I drip juice directly on the wick/coil, I get one or two great vapes, then the wicking stops again.

I can post a pic of my setup when I get home if it would help... it's just strange that I didn't change anything and suddenly the wicking stopped.

Any suggestions?

This thread was never intended to be a coil thread and to understand all the variables that happen inside a rolled SS wick you first have to know the physics of what is happening at a point on the wire and the relationship of this to the wick and the juice. There is a reason you will never see a coil from me with less than 6 wraps. One reason is that wicks will clog if to much heat is concentrated on a small area. This thread was only to prove true wicking with different mesh and roll. If you understand the thread I am posting here you will understand a lot about why a larger heating area is better and wicks better IMO.

BJ43, my intent was certainly not to hijack the thread, but rather to seek advice from those more experienced than I on potential areas to look. That being said, the comment about coil wraps and the link are helpful, and provides some direction in my tinkering... thanks.
No problem, and I don't consider it highjacking. Just stating my view. Coils and their relationship to wicking on SS wicks have many variables and none is best. A 3/4 wrap 32g coil 2ohms at 10 watts will probably clog a ss wick faster than a 28g 10 wrap 2ohm at 10 watts. It is a myth that watts are the same. In the above example the the heat is spread out over a much larger area on the 28g and the wire temp is much less, resulting in less gunking in the wick. When you have been at this as long as I have and are just vaping 0 nic for the pleasure of vaping, the relationship of heat to juice becomes very important. What at first I thought was TH was nothing more than excessive heat and opaques the true flavor of my juices.

Of course! A picture is worth a thousand words. Thank you guys for the help.

The first picture is the picture of the coil. The second is when I'm firing the device and the problem it is having. And the third picture is after I had emptied the tank and dry fired. The coil was not adjusted between the second and third photos.

I've run in to this with certain wicks in my t+ before as well, I think that the top of that wick is going dry.

Does anyone have a US supplier of high quality 500# mesh?

I ran out of my last order from the Mesh Company and didn't want to wait for shipping. I used a local supplier and it doesn't wick nearly as well - I threw an old, use Mesh Company 500# wick in and it works as well as it used to. The new mesh was noticeably rougher so I presume the weave isn't the same or as dense.

Novcon (or maybe Tibs) might be able to give you the name of the supplier used in the ill-fated gogoplata co-op. It's good stuff. IMO, anyway.
