This seems a great distance from bonuts, that was only early this year.

Haha, I still have a stock of pipe screens and an HH357 with bonuts in it. Thats how great they are...

I am now using some flat 30g wire to get more surface area and I am pre rolling the coil on a drill bit, here is a 8 wrap flat coil at 1.7 ohm at 7.5 watts, could drain the tank on one constant hit without a hotspot. This wick is 635 mesh boiled twice 80mm rolled dense no center hole. Isolation was just dripping on the coil/wick while hitting it with low voltage. You can observe no spurting out the top. Clic on pic for video

Some trash on the coil flash burned not a hot spot, the juice is Bobas 100% VG.

was wondering about flat mesh, how did you flatten it, hammer?

So how does it vape vs say 28G?

Seems to produce more vaper at a lower wattage than 28 or 30g and the vaper seems to come more out of the wick in between the wraps than on the outer surface of the flat wire. Flavor wise so far no big difference. I will put some on the quartz tomorrow to test. Will do some burn test with the camera on a tripod, less jitters than these 70 year old hands.:toast:

BJ what is the OD of your wick once you have it rolled?

I'm still trying to master tight wick rolling, and not having a purchased genisis style aty I'm not sure what OD wick I should be trying to achieve.

*Edit*....I should clarify, some of your earlier post say 2.5mm. Is that still your OD?

2.5mm is about right but I really don't measure the dia much. Just roll it until it fits snug in the wick hole.

BJ,
Just got my first RAT. DID Clone. Currently only using the wire and mesh that came with it. I rolled the mesh as tight as possible, but as you already know, some dry times. After reading the #500 Mess thread...well most of it anyway...I have purchased some #500 mesh and different guages of wire. Should get them tomorrow. I see that you have chosen to go with the #600 on your set-ups. I, like you, prefer the 7-8 watt range with many coils. Earlier in this thread you stated that in the shorter tanks, you did not see much difference in the #500 and #600 mesh performance. Does that still hold true? Or to get the full potential out of a smallish tank and multiple wrap set up, will I need to bump up to the #600? Thanks for these two threads. I have learned SO much.

Stay with the #500, it is completely capable of wicking efficiently to 2 inches above the juice line.

I started with the 635 in my DID back on the 6th I believe. I was using very dark juice and cleaning the wick and coil daily. I was not removing the wick and burning it daily, just minor dry burning and using a toothpick to remove the goop. Every couple of days I would remove it and hit it w a lighter and thoroughly dry burn the coil. After the first week I switched to a clear juice and was going several days w/o cleaning.
This morning I removed the wick from the DID and trimmed maybe 15 mm off of it and re-rolled it tighter and smaller so I could use it in my Chobra (much thinner wick hole). The part I cut off was the outer layers and there are visible holes burned thru the first 2 layers. Just where the coil was and only maybe 3 or 4 tiny holes. I only noticed the holes when I passed the excess across the front of my monitor so it was "back lit". Just happenstance not thinking this would of happened.
I have been vaping on a new 1.5Ω coil for about 2 hrs and the wick is like new.
I'm wondering about flipping the wick over in another couple of weeks to maximize mileage. I am loving the performance of this mesh. I know the flavor is enhanced with this mesh. I went thru almost a whole sheet of 500 before I got the 635.

So this wick ^^^ I thought had finally come to the end of it's life today. I had it in a Chobra after at least 25 or 30 dry burns, remove the wick hit it w a lighter, re-install it etc...
Well today the top where the coil is was so solid I couldnt get it loose, to unroll. So I cut 10 MMs off the top and unrolled it. I found the mesh inside was fine. So I completely unrolled it and flattened it out. Then It dawned on me that there was enough length going the opposite direction to make the stretch as a new wick. So with about 15 mm left I rolled it in the opposite direction and right now I am vaping it again in the Chobra w 3 wraps of ribbon wire. There is a significant hole thru the center of the wick, but its working great. I do have to tilt every now and then as there is not a whole lot of material left.

Point is this wick was originally installed in my DID on 12/6/12. Trimmed down many weeks later to fit a smaller wick hole and today its still plugging away, well over 90 days of heavy use.
Also for the past 60 days I have been vaping NETs exclusively. These juices are very hard on wicks and coils.
