I made this observation when I was building my coil. I built a 7/7 coil with 29awg, test fire and everything seemed alright. That's when I saw vapor in the tank. I remember reading somewhere that if you have vapor in the tank, most likely you have a minute short somewhere.

Lo and behold!! A tiny top coil short was what happened to mine. Adjusted with fingernails and on my way to vape heaven... :D

it doesn't appear to have a short... they're all glowin red...

As was mine. It was a situation of all glowing coils with additional fissure on top coil. I didn't fire continuously. Just pulsing the coil to get even glow.

Pulse, stop. Pulse, stop. That's the best way for me in terms of checking for hotspots.

These small fissures can occur anywhere.

Just my 2 centz...

Edit: I'm sure I'm not the only one who faced this scenario before, but I just want to make sure I wasn't crazy.

I have had a few bad wick days and resorted to silica a time or 3. I have one juice that tastes so much better with silica one of the beauties of the genesis is that you can use anything. I set one RBA up today with cotton ball wick and it is working great.
This week,I'm going to make a silica wick for my DID.

Thanks overall, I was hoping to hear some positive feedback. I will try it.

heh... so uhhh... i did it... LOL... my very 1st coil/mesh attempt... i built an "r" wick in the vivi nova... 35mm long x 30mm wide 400 mesh... 6/5 wrap on 32awg gave me 2.7ohms...oxidized the wick by candle light (i was feelin romantical??? idk...) but i got ahead of myself and forgot to burn any juice on there before wrapping the coil... but i tested the ohms on the wick itself all over before putting the coil on... all places i touched showed default 1... test fired on a twist on 3.3v (hehe... figured if i kill a $25 twist i won't be too upset)... had a couple hot spots, took a toothpick, moved some coils around till they all glowed red, and dropped some juice... no popping, but got a nice sizzle... in the tank it went, filled it with juice... WIN! i can't chain vape, but a nice vapor, and flavor with my kick set at 8 watts... tried bumping up to 9 and immediately got burnt taste... however i am getting vapor in the tank... don't know what's goin on there...

so all in all... i feel like that was a little too easy... noob luck or did i do something wrong? i was half expecting to set the house on fire... or at least the dog... :D

capillary action in the "r" wick is pretty much non existent... was sitting there overnight (straight up) took a drag, good... went to take another... dry hit... so guessin it's only gravitational or not wicking anywhere near fast enough... ugghh

Rocking a 1.1 ohm 5 wrap of 28k-a1 on 105mm of #500 on my DID / Gp paps combo. MASSIVE CLOUDS OF VAPOR. Took a whole tank to break the wick in though, god it tasted awful. Tastes amazing now. No wicking issues at all, could probably do a static burn through the whole tank and not get a red coil.

Same thing happened with my first 635, contemplated dumping it or the girlfriend. Luckily it worked out and both are safe.

A4 is the size of the sheet, A3 is double the size of A4. No special complex answer here LOL

Gotcha thanks! Just got my first RBA setup with some #400 but the mesh I bought was small and I used all of it getting the hang of it. Looks like I will put in an order for some.

I made a 5 wrap with some 28 awg Kanthal, and it read 1.5 ohms. That means there are no shorts. I can't believe the difference it makes. Even the smallest short makes a huge difference in vapor quality.
Your Ohms seem too high for some reason Jimi, check this app out if you are doing a 5wrap coil with coil pitch around 1-1.2mm, 28kanthal A-1 on a 3.5mm diameter DID coil your Ohms should be around 1Ohm or 1.2Ohms for a 6wrap, of it's a smaller coil/wick diameter it will be even less, unless of course it's 30g kanthal, in which case 1.5Ohms would be about right. Just my :2c:

Agreed. My 5 wrap of 28 on my DID is 1.1 ohm. Thats on 105mm of 500 mesh.

Sent from my Samsung S III running on SS mesh and kanthal.

I also have 30 awg. Maybe its 29 awg. Who knows, but it's rocking now. I don't need no stinking glass :D

I'm glad your happy with your setup Jimi, who cares what's going with the ohms thing, I was surprised as I got my method down how the resistance stayed up instead of dropping all the time due to shorts. Just looking out for you as I've had higher than expected ohms on one of my DIDs due to a poor ground when I used a smokteck shorty plastic tank and it was a tad longer than the standard ss tank and the thing needed to be super tightened on the Did to get a good connection, and a slightly loose terminal screw has also been the cause of higher than expected Ohms. I've been known to be too helpful LOL.
