I usually wrap my mesh twice around the nail I use to make it the right size to fit in my DID hole. Is that too thin a wall, the hole is pretty big down the middle. It doesn't wick very well unless I remove the fill hole screw which i am loath to do due to it making the DID unable to lay on its side. Should I make a thicker mesh wick, will that help with wicking?

Yea mate the thicker the better. You only want a very small hole down the middle. For the did try rolling at least 110mm of mesh.

Well I juat got some 500 in the mail today, and rolled a 50mm wick with a small center hole, and am having wicking issues with bobas 100%VG unless I tilt my orion. Any tips, because I read so many people saying that little to no.tilt is needed with 500.

I think the general condenses is that a tight wick with no center hole works best. It has worked for me better than with the center hole.

Ive tried it both ways and having very poor results. Dont know whats going on I got a small piece of 500 from a friend and it works great on my bliss, but this stuff I got from Stormys Celler isn't wicking, I get maybe 5 sec. Of vapor the coil starts glowing, and thats with the device at 2 o'clock!!!

These will hinder wicking IMHO.
1.Your solid wick is rolled too tight.
2.Your tank needs a breather hole.
3.Your wick is too tight in the hole.
4.Your coil is too loose or tight.
These are my current setups, for more go here:http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...sions-wire-size-wraps-specific-devices-2.html

DID Standard No.1 Son.( Brass nuts & center post)
Wickhole:3.5mm
#500 mesh, (Quick allover Jack frost, then rolled, torched quenched 2-3 times, then oxidizes with vertical juiceburns 2-3 times)
Starting mesh size: 37 x 110mm.
Solid wick rolled to 3.3-3.4mm(not as tight as I can roll it though, slightly "spongy" rather than solid as a rock)
6/7 wraps 28awg nichrome
0.9 ohms
Vaped from 4.2 down to 3.6 volts or 19.6 - 14.4 Watts on mechanical mod (Paps V2 18650 & 18350)
Adjustable tank breather screw one turn out from fully closed(could probably close it right up , but still experimenting),no leaks, just minimal seepage when super hot from chain vaping and laying on side for 15mins)

DID Standard No.2 Son (SS nuts & center post)
Wickhole:3.5mm
#500 mesh, (Quick allover Jack frost, then rolled, torched quenched 2-3 times, then oxidizes with vertical juice burns 2-3 times)
Starting mesh size: 37 x 85mm.
20g center hole (around 1mm) wick rolled to 3.3-3.4mm(not as tight as I can roll it though, slightly "spongy" rather than solid as a rock)
3/4 wraps 32awg kanthal
1.7 ohms
Vaped at 9-12 Watts on Zmax (true watts closer to =10-12watts)
Adjustable tank breather screw half a turn out from fully closed(again could probably close it right up , but still experimenting),no leaks..

Studiovap nice summary.

1.Your solid wick is rolled too tight.
2.Your tank needs a breather hole.
3.Your wick is too tight in the hole.
4.Your coil is too loose or tight.

I would add two more:

5. Your wick is over oxidized
6. Your juice is too thick. (viscosity)

I know Jimi D. I had some good one's with 30% flavorings but it ruined my wicks in no time. So I am back at the max 3% flavorings, but there are plenty good one's and steeping is key to get a beautiful flavor anyway. I even use absolutes that take only one drop in 10 ml, let it steep for months and it is the best! My wicks will last forever now, hardly have to clean it.
Just vape, enjoy and not tinker is worth a lot after more then three years of experimenting :)

Emonty, I was just joking LOL. I have Flavour Art's Desert Ship at 1% in my DID right now. I get stellar performance. I did have some Capella's Apple Pie at 12% awhile back. It tasted amazing, but the wick clogged up in a couple days.

Im gonna fiddle with it some more today and see if i can remedy the problem.

I have read your post bro but really don't know other then roll it a little less tight and break it in for a few tanks. got my Orion's working perfect but honestly I always tilt it as that is my natural way of vaping. To keep it vertical is not how I hold my PV so really don't have any issues with wicking at all. Good luck!

PS: My Orion setup 500# 60 mm x 35 mm with 28 AWG 6/7 wraps at ~1.1 ohm

@shooter - In my Orion, I am using 50mm wide x whatever (i trim it) #500 rolled down to 2mm (as my coil is 2mm pre-made) solid. I torch my wick first, then roll it, nothing else is done to it other then a juice soak (no quenching or juice burn). Slide it into my 6/7 wrap of 30g nichrome @ ~1.3Ω. There is room around the wick inside the wick hole.

Perhaps the stuff from Stormy is not right, or the stuff we got from Jay isn't???

Right Jolly, I torch my #500 unrolled very quickly, roll, then oxidize again very fast one time, no juice and no quenching either...
I do my wick the same way except I wrap the coil on the wick then do the 2nd oxidation but only in the coil area. I find that less is more effective when torching a wick.

I'm finding When I do my dry burns and coil nudging at higher watts for longer periods the hot coil is actually oxidizing the mesh for me with great stable results, as long as I've already torched and oxidized enough to get a couple of coils glowing to begin with I'm finding I' good from there with the nudging. I can tighten my coil and oxidize my wick when I get a glow on LOL.
