A cabin in the woods and loving it
Kind of tired sometimes of people buying into the Nicotine Addict label. My view is that we need to think for ourselves and not let others force their agendas on us.

If nicotine addiction is the case then there are a multitude of addictions: Sugar addicts; Power addicts; Gossip addicts; Caffiene addicts; Drama-queen/king addicts; Kick-people-when-they're-down-to-try-to-make-themselves-feel-better addicts; <Insert any substance here> addicts; Throw-me-a-pity-party addicts....The list is Endless. All complete with withdrawal symptoms to some degree or another if they're removed from "their addiction" too.

Can't make a profit from a Bully Cessation Program though because insurance wouldn't cover it, so no sense throwing that one out there as a major addiction.

What's your take on the Addict label?

I really don't see why it's a problem.

I'm a nic addict. So?

I'm also a caffeine addict, and I have more compulsive/habitual addictions than I can count on one hand. So do a lot of (ex)smokers, actually.

You're only "buying into it" if you take addiction to mean anything other than what it does - you're addicted enough to this chemical that removing it really messes you up. In my case, that's true. Point blank.

If other people want to make ridiculous assumptions based on that, that's their problem. Not mine.

For me, it is simple. I'm addicted to nicotine.
Remove it for a day and I'm ready to literally :censored: someone. Literally.

Same with caffeine, only I wouldn't :censored: someone, I'd just feel horrible. I've cut way down.

Anything else I strongly desire or love.... Women, cars, money, expensive food, alcohol, etc ... I can get by without it EASILY

AMEN! to that!!

Hi, my name is Kathie and I am a nicotine addict. I am also proud to say I am an ex-smoker. I don't know for sure if it is the nicotine or not, but I do know that I couldn't quit (and I tried everything) until I found vaping. I will gladly be addicted to nicotine for the rest of my life because I can now take my dogs for walks without wheezing, and wake up in the mornings without coughing up a lung. I am happy and proud of me - nicotine and all.

The biggest problem I personally have with folks who want to label smokers as "bad" or whatever is you would have a very hard time finding any of them without any addiction, whether it's coffee, soda, facebook, their cell phone, whatever. Smoking is disgusting, no doubt, but so is texting while driving.

Yeah.. what about people who waste their lives in front of some stupid video game.. Or sports channels..

I really don't LIKE the word addiction, I really prefer dependent. It's NOT as ugly of a concept. Diabetics who take insulin are dependent on it, just like I am on other meds I take because I would have problems if I went without them. I think addiction has been dragged through the dirt and been tarnished as a word for use with things like coffee, and nicotine by the association it's got with illicit drug use which gets real ugly too. (think of shooting up and tell me it's NOT an ugly 'addiction') I remember in the 80's it was pretty much restricted to being associated with illicit drug use, alcohol and cigarettes in general, not just the nicotine in them. Interesting thread.

I don't know... it's more honest than habit.. I don't feel it's as accurate as addicted.
Dependant implies that it's necessary for ones survival..
Nicotine makes the primitive brain believe that it is..
But it's definitely not

I don't believe much in alcohol being an addiction, even though I've been straight to the pitts of hell .. and I mean hell .. with alcohol. The reason for that is, I can walk away from alcohol. And yes, there is physical withdrawl if you'd done enough of it for long enough, but it never triggered survival instincts in me when I abstained from it like nicotine does.

When you try stop nicotine use, your brain uses anything it can to get you to feed it nicotine. Like it would do if you tried to stop your own breathing. Nicotine withdrawl includes fear, anger, one even goes through the stages of loss and grieving they normally would if a close loved one had died.. That, to me, has to be what the word addiction is meant for.

the only thing that bothers me about it is the connotation that addiction is bad and if you're NOT addicted you're better then someone else who is, you know? It's the stereotyping that gets to me. I agree with you about the withdrawal of nicotine being similar to losing someone, been there and done that. It's hard to give up, but at least with vaping you can still get the habitual HTM gratification that cold turkey quitting doesn't offer.

Well, I can't find the video I was looking for, but I saw something that told me that addiction is a survival instinct. . Basically they said that the ability to be addicted meant that you have a good chance of survival out in the wild.. I think that eating or drinking water cause a small release of dopamine. A reward for doing something that helps us survive.

The lower brain I think tries to give us strong strong urges to pursue and enjoy things necessary for survival. And nicotine happens to trick it into believing an a not conscious level that it is necessary for our survival.

If you're able to become strongly addicted to something, you also probably will very forcefully pursue food and water.

I lost myself
Hope some of it made sense
It's very late I'm very tired ... LoL over here
