Kids are vaping for the nic buzz. Doesn't matter what flavor.
Exactly. Juul pods have 50mg nic. That would give almost anyone a nic buzz. Flavored nic is just icing on the cake, but the primary reason they use e-cigs is for the buzz.

Kids learn early in life that adults use tobacco, alcohol, pills, and other drugs to escape from reality. They see it in TV shows and movies, and very possibly in their own home. At this age, teens are learning to test the limits of society. A part of the allure of vaping is because it is an adult activity. Add to the fact that they can use contraband drugs on their vape pen makes vaping all the more alluring.

The answer is not allowing teens to vape zero-nic. How could it be determined that they didn't switch the pod to one with nic, or refilled it with nic e-liquid, or with a contraband e-liquid? Bad idea.

That is difficult to say whether kids are in it for the nic buzz. From what I have found, the teenage trend of vaping started prior to Juul’s market saturation. Juul just became the brand of choice – the iPhone or Beats headphones of vaping. Easily acquired, easily concealed. If Juul and or even high nic juices did not exist, I think we would still have this problem.

I've spoken to several high school students at my alma mater during athletic events and at the library. I asked specifically why teens vape. None said it was because they liked the flavors. None mentioned the vape tricks they saw on You Tube. All of them said it was for the nic buzz that the Juuls give with that 50mg nic. They play a Truth or Dare game to the point of almost becoming unconscious.

No doubt (my guess) some are using those contraband vials with the funny stuff in them, too. One 19 year old told me he could get me vial of "FDA approved 99% T.H.C." for $50.

Imo kids are going to do whatever, so I dont seeing zero nic really working . Yes nic is addicting and adds to the potential dangers, but just because one vapes zero nic doesn't make it something kids should do...that's like saying take out the caffeine in coke and it's safe for anyone or let's make it ok for kids to smoke no nic cigarettes. They would still be inhaling chemicals into there lungs which is not good for kids. I really think alot of folks think as long as theres no nic in vaping its totally ok.

Based on what I read, you get more pollutants in your lungs going outside.

Maybe so. I remember the buzz from cigs when I first started. We would buy a pack between a few of us. I would have a couple hidden in a sock under my mattress. In the evening I would take the dog for a walk along the beach and light up my first or second smoke of the day. That was a fine buzz. Feel a bit lightheaded and dizzy, but very pleasant. Once you start smoking regularly that doesn't happen any more. I expect the same happens with vaping. Teens who start doing it a lot wouldn't get the buzz any more. With cigs you went on doing it because by that time you were starting to be addicted but I'm not convinced that would be the case with vaping.

Reminds me of the time as a teen my parents discovered my porn stash and the excuse my Dad made up on my behalf: "well maybe he was curious about how the parts fit together." And the look on my mother's face! "No, [Dad], I think it's pretty obvious he used this material for self-gratification." <3 Dad

Anyone who thinks a teen looks at porn for educational purposes is a wishful thinker at best and deluded at worst, and the same goes for anyone who thinks teens vape nicotine for the flavor and not the head rush. :D

Fair enough, but that is one small group and not painting a whole picture. There are many articles on teenage vaping that pre-date Juul

The 3 main reasons youth use e-cigarettes

We are all here because we use to smoke cigarettes, and many of us started at an early teen age. Did we start using them because of the buzz, peer pressure, the perception of looking cool or because it was an adult activity and this was just one step toward being (or acting like) and adult?

I have no doubt kids are into vaping for the buzz, but I also believe that is not the only reason why and if we did not have high nic pods, we would still be facing this problem with underage vaping.

I would be thrilled he was getting it at a store rather than the street. Then I'd beat the store clerk for selling to a minor.

So you've indirectly answered my questions and made the kid unaccountable and you would take it out on some poor minimum wage worker to assume their fake id is legit.

In the hospital you may never get a chance to ask who/what/when/where this all went south. Without honest conversations (to yourself as well as your kid) you're now planning for some serious medical bills and possibly a law suit.

Would you honestly be able to say that what caused the issue is the store with 100% certainty?

90% for the buzz, 10% for an excuse to take a break without being accused of loafing. The head rush was incredible for the first couple weeks.

I saw a group of teens trying to buy non-alcoholic beer

I buy 0 alco vodca for my family all the time, never had an issue with it.
They even sell it to minors here, the only difference - they have to call the minor allowed version: "mineral water"

    Juul pods have 50mg nic
    5% contain ~59mg/ml, 3% contain ~35mg/ml

I drank the occasional non alcoholic beer when pregnant. If you have to do it (non alcoholic beer is a crime against humanity in my opinion) get a German beer called Bittburger Drive. The Germans can do anything including making non alcoholic beer taste like real beer.

I would say the vaping 0 nic is a bad idea and go on about the reasons why, except I suspect if you could get such a law passed, that most Juuling teens would immediately go, "OH 0 nic is LEGAL. I will switch! Etc."

NONE of them would do it so hey, knock yourself out. It's not like we can't use MORE lawsuits, crimes and etc, to do with vaping. I mean..,

I can envision how this all started.
    SP = school principal
    HM = helicopter mom
VT = vaping teen, son of HM

SP: Mrs. HM, I regret to inform you that your son VT was caught vaping on school property.
HM: What!? Surely this is a mistake. My little darling nursed until the 24th trimester and always does what his mommy says, and we've agreed that vaping is very very bad.
SP: I can assure you that VT was caught using a nicotine vaporizer in violation of school policy.
HM: Well I never! We'll see about this. Where is my precious little crotch goblin?
SP: He's waiting in the other room. Let's bring him in.
HM: Vaping H. Teen! Your principal is saying that somebody thinks you were smoking one of those nasty little e-cigarettes! What really happened??
VT: Um. Well it's, just that, um, I kinda did.
HM: Wha-wha-what??? But honey we talked about this! Surely you don't want to become an addict and ruin your future!!
SP: You see, Mrs. HM? Vaping is becoming an epidemic around here and it seems even the best students can be caught up in a wave of peer pressure.
HM: Did your friends make you do this? Give me the name of the person who hooked you. Was it Skyler's son Flynn? I know he's a bad influence.
VT: Nobody gave it to me. I found it lying around... in a desk.
HM: Mr. SP! How can your school tolerate the presence of illegal devices? Smoochie, tell me you didn't put it in your mouth. You could be infected right now, with herpes or Epstein-Barr. Why did you do it?
VT: Well, it smelled kinda nice... like mango.
HM: Tell me you didn't inhale.
VT: What? Oh! Nooooo of course I... didn't inhale it. I just tasted it. Then Mrs. Crabapple walked in.
SP: Actually, there's a good deal more to the sto—
HM: Well that goodness that's cleared up. My raison d'être is obviously the victim here, and falsely accused. YOUR school is negligent for allowing these devices in the classroom, so I'll expect you to foot the bill for his medical examination and grief counseling. And he never would have been tricked if it hadn't smelled like candy. I can't see why the degenerates who make those things would add flavors anyway unless they intended to prey on innocent children from the beginning. Wait until the PTA hears about this, and the media!

    later:

Flynn: Dude! They called you to the principal's office. Did you get in trouble??
VT: lol I used the Clinton defense and they fell for it. You're safe. Adults are so ......ed lmfao. Gimme a hit of that Unicorn Blood I need to relax.

Looking back it was all there. My mates were doing it. Being part of the in-crowd. The thrill of something forbidden. The buzz.

Looking back some more, I was so sure that if I sucked a mint afterwards my parents would never know. They never said anything. I guess it wasn't such a big deal then. The full story of the health effects of smoking was just emerging.
