I soaked my A-7 in isopropyl alcohol for a few days (I actually forgot about it) and slight rust developed in certain areas. The rust buffed right out, but it remains ever-so-slightly pitted. It's still fine...just a word of caution; these aren't made of the highest grade stainless steel

For the price, I'm surprised they're made out of any sort of stainless steel :) I don't know of any sub-$50 rba that's made with SS

I totally agree! I think I picked my A-7 up for $14. I was really expecting chrome over brass for that price. I was really shocked to find out that it was entirely SS. I was even MORE shocked to find out how hard SS is to drill :)

So... I'm certainly not complaining of the quality, just calling out that it has the potential to oxidize in the right environment.

One vendor of the A-7 published it as made from 303 SS. Another more technical name for SS is Corrosion Resistant Steel (CRES), which resists corrosion, but isn't corrosion proof. 303 has sulfur and phosphorous added, which makes it the easiest SS to machine. However the added chemistry decreases its resistance to corrosion.

I'm not a chemist, but store-bought 70% Isopropyl alcohol contains 30% purified water and either the alcohol or the water or a combination of both attacked the material. Also, 303 is most corrosive when it's very thin and the A-7 has some thin sections.

I said at one time I liked the A7 even a bit more than the ERA. Much time has passed and while I still think the A7 is better than any premade atty, I have come to favor the era over it by a fairly large margin. So much that I am now looking to replace all 4 of my A7's with ERA or Hornets as I find good deals on them. Quite an undertaking financially tho.

I am glad to see the A7 working for so many people here. Awesome value.

The thing is, one of the things I like about the A7 over say something like the ERA is the A7's juice well...I have to squonk my ERA's 2-3X as often...I guess another reason why the height of the A7 doesn't really bother me is because it's recessed into one of the mods I purpose built for it...2 Zmax's epoxied together, one is simply a Zmax which powers it's own 510 connector as well as a connector I installed in a gutted Zmax tube which also has a 6ml juice bottle bottom feeding a recessed A7

Now... here's the $50,000 question. I buffed the A7 out and got rid of the rust that was visable, however there is no way to tell if rust remains in places that I cant see, i.e. juice holes, threaded areas. Should I use this thing, or just toss it and pick up another?

If anyone has an A-7 that hasn't worked for them, maybe due to shorting, please pm me... I could use the guts to get mine up and running. My outside (top and bottom) casing isn't rusted... just the innards. If all else fails, I'm not going to mess around with this. For $16 I'll pick up another.

FYI for A7 people. For complete cleaning of A7 base and to avoid rusting the base can be easily taken apart. I imagine breaking the "innards" down is not necessary for cleaning in most cases. "Innards" just screw out. Gently hold both posts and unscrew counter clockwise. "Innards" come out in one piece.

Bar Keepers Friend is great for cleaning SS and removing some stains, rust, etc. It is very mildly abrasive and has a very weak acid, similar to citric acid, that is very safe to use. One of the things we use to remove iron stains from pool surfaces, plaster and synthetics, is mild acids, like citric or asorbic acid, in high dose treatment into pool water. (Doesn't work for most other metal stains though. And can actually set copper stains.) Most grocery stores, around here, have it with cleaning products.

Amazon.com: Bar Keepers Friend® Cleanser & Polish: 12 OZ: Home & Kitchen

DO NOT USE BAR KEEPERS FRIEND ON: Gold, silver, pewter, marble, lacquered metals, or anodized aluminum.

I use it on my "manly salmon/pinkish" "formica" kitchen counters. Rub in gently and let sit to bleach out even tea stains. Nothing, and I mean, NOTHING, cleans my SS sinks any better or faster than BKF. It's one of the few things you can use on antique porcelain/pottery/earthenware that doesn't break down the base or glazing.

Anyone know anything about the 'mini' A7 that's supposed to be coming out soon? Is it just a shorter cap? If so, will that shorter cap fit on a full-sized A7 base? Does it have a smaller diameter so it'll fit on, say, a REO Mini?

Dave, if you haven't seen it yet, there's a newly started thread about them...
