My fiancee and I have Jack, our German Shepherd mix, he's a year and 9 months.

We think he's mixed with whippet, because he has a lot of whippet behavior (ears back when scared, easily spooked) and loves to run. He's also a lot smaller than a normal sized German Shepherd. Vet tends to agree with my guess, but we'll never know for sure. He was a street dog, they found him at 6 months old and we got him last September. Never had a dog that I took to as much as I have Jack. He's a little pain sometimes, I'm no dog trainer, but I *think* when he starts acting like a pain, he's attempting to jump the social ladder and be *my* boss, so I have to lay down the law and keep him in line.

I also have my chocolate lab, Coco (came with the name) who's around 11. I adopted her from a shelter 5 years ago when she was 6. At the time, I was working 50-60 hour weeks and all I wanted to do when I came home was sleep, so she took to my mom and pretty much became my mom's dog. She's surprisingly healthy for her age, she's getting a little slow going up the stairs, and doesn't like to move around the house as much as she used to, just likes to pick a place and lay there, but she's not showing signs of hip dysplasia or anything life threatening yet.

Coco acts like she's starving a lot, so she's really easy to control with food. I think her previous owners might have neglected her. =\ Interesting thing about that, though, is whenever I'm vaping something that smells sweet, she's always GLUED to my side, licking the vapor if it's down on her level.

We've almost always had dogs in my life. When I was a little kid, we had two doxen, but had to give them up because of my dad's allergies. After his sphenoid surgery he was alright with dogs, so we found this REALLY sick lab/rottweiler mix who was about a year old that we named Brownie. My dad really took to her, and after we got her all nursed back to health and all she was a great dog for about 11 years, but she loooved to go under the fence. A couple years later we went looking for a dog for my sister (without her present) and found Judy, a yellow lab puppy, that we picked out for my sister but I wouldn't give her up, so we kept her. She later went blind and came down with diabetes, and around age 12 just laid down and gave up, so we had to put her down back in 2004. Before Judy got hip dysplasia she loved to go OVER the fence, so we had two escape artists.

My brother has a pit/beagle (we think beagle) mix. Since we got Jack, she's gotten too aggressive, and I don't allow her around Jack at all, keeping her gated out. She's attacked both dogs viciously, Jack's wound was a scratch (that left a scar) on his face, Coco's was a big gash on her head that took stitches. She does it again to either dog, she's outta here.

Long post :p I've always liked having dogs. Not a cat person, definitely not a cast person.

I have 6 dogs and a cat... all rescues.

From oldest to youngest on the dogs:

12 1/2 year old Yorkie/Rat Terrier mix adopted from a shelter at 5 weeks old. She's the alpha and everyone knows it!

12 yr old American Pit Bull Terrier/Greyhound mix - dumped on a vet's door in a litter of 15 one day puppy mill puppies. I had to wait until she was 3 mos old to get her due to health issues.

7 yr old Red Nose Staffordshire Terrier (Pit Bull) - I removed her from an abusive home when she was 8 weeks old. At 2 years old she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her left breast and lots of muscle were removed and she's been cancer free since.

Approx 7 yr old Staffordshire Terrier (Pit Bull) - adopted straight off of death row in a shelter in N. Carolina. It took 4 car rides and 3 plane trips (thanks to Pilots 'n Paws for stepping up!!) to get her to me in Texas. She was very dog aggressive on arrival, but with lots of work from my dogs, myself and her, she is now dog friendly and loves her brothers and sisters!! The cat... not so much.

7 yr old Terrier mixed with something - at 7 months old I took him out of the same abusive home I took the other one from. They got him after I took the other one, he was half starved and staying out on a covered porch with feces and urine everywhere and he was badly abused. Took months to get him to just let me pet him. He won't be around anyone else and won't let anyone else touch him... except the vet with the help of me and a tech.

7 yr old Jack Russell Terrier/Chihuahua mix - Mr. Personality! He was approx 2 1/2 - 3 yrs old when he came to live with us after a death in the family. His favorite toys are his 3 Pit Bulls!

Approx 9 yr old Manx cat - came to live with us 1 1/2 yrs ago after his elderly mom moved in with family and he had no place to go. He rules the outside and I sneak him into the house when it's cold or rainy. He has no fear and allows nothing on his property!

My house is a zoo! With 6 Terriers and a cat, wild critters don't stand a chance around here. :)

The brood grows and declines from time to time, mostly due to the piggys comings and goings; but for now this is the fam....

Here are the loves of my life~my furbabies.

First up is Loki, my long haired chi baby. Always loved animals and had pets all my life, but this one-OMG, my heart is in his little paws! He was a spur of the moment decision (I was distraught after loosing an FELV kitty) and I was regretting it before his delivery. Looking back, can't believe how close I came to not having him in my life. What love I would have missed out on if I cancelled this boy! Loki is a quirkly little guy who delights me with his antics. He prances like a horse, jumps like a fox, loves to make beds all over the house, and snuggle under the covers. But most delightful of all is the way he poops. He twirls around on his front legs like a ballerina while pivoting over a clump of grass or brush, where he deposits his gifts with his hiney up in the air. Weirdest thing I've ever seen and I still get a laugh out of it almost every time he goes. Of course he's got a beautiful little skirt of hair in back that in the process gets fanned out over the clump of grass-which makes it the poo landing zone. This of course means I have to clean his bottom after almost every "go." God is getting even with me for not producing human children....

Here he is at nappy time. Now don't laugh at his diapey, potty training has not gone well!

Next is my Goldie Girl. She was an addon when I was rescuing another kitty and I couldn't pass up those amber eyes. She's a weird one for sure. I never had a "mommy eater" kitty before. She will come up for lovins and be lickin, lickin, lickin away ~ and then decide I taste good. She has sharp teeth... Loves to eat my hair-go figure? Woke up one morning when she was about 6 months old to find I now had bangs where there were none before. Little twit ate about 1/2 inch wide section of my hair smack dab in the middle of my forehead and left the remnants about an inch long. It was loverly! Needless to say, I don't sleep so deeply any more....

Mica Kitty is just a little lover boy. The most affectionate male cat I've ever had. Yeppers, he's a momma's boy with a beautiful face. Mica just loves to knock over liquids. Doesn't matter if it's a can, a cup, a bottle, or whatever. He instinctively knows something spillable is in there and he delights in paw batting until he succeeds in knocking it over. He also enjoys picking ice cubes out my water cause he knows how mommy loves the taste of furry paws that just trampled through the litter box! He also has thing for the toilet. When he knows I'm heading there he makes a mad dash for the bathroom to beat me to the pot! And there he stands on the seat waiting for my arrival. I cannot sit on the throne without this kitty in my lap. Doesn't matter where in the house he is, he can hear the "stream" and comes to pole vault on my lap. Weirdo! But Mica is has many redeeming qualities as well, particularly at bedtime. He's a huge snuggle bug. He makes a beeline for the bed whenever I head in that part of the house. He just loves to sit on my mommy's chest and make biscuits before falling asleep. At the end of the day, who could be mad at all the mischief when there's a snuggling purring puffball under your chin? Here's Mr. Innocent...

And last but not least is Mr. Chester Topaz. He started out residence here as my half cat. My neighbor wanted to adopt him, but the hubby was not in agreement. So she asked if he could live with my menagerie so she could come over and be his part time mom. He was such a sweet boy I couldn't possibly say no. Well as time went on his "part-time mom" forgot about him. But that's okay cause he's firmly entrenched in my crew now and he's not going anywhere-I lurv him too much. He is the sweetest kitty I have. He doesn't cause any trouble or make a mess. He's a purrrrrr machine and loves to be cuddled. He likes to take quick showers and is usually sitting on the corner of the tub while I'm in there. He will occasionally make a mad dash through the water stream when he gets impatient for mommy. He loves him some Loki! Every time Loki and I come home, Mr. Chester Topaz has to run to greet him. He follows him around for a few minutes giving him head butts and hugs-cutest thing I ever did see!
Here's my handsome boy:

I cried when I read your post! Our fur babies are all rescues, too. My female is a Lab/Pit mix, and she is the sweetest dog! Pit Bulls have a largely undeserved reputation. With proper training, and responsible owners, they are great companions! My niece has 2 of her own, and they are wonderful with her son.

It just disgusts and infuriates me to see animals abused or neglected!!!! But I'm SO glad to see people step up and do whatever they can to stop it!! It breaks my heart knowing I can't save them all, but I can save some.

Thank you for sharing your babies with us!
