My fiancee and I have Jack, our German Shepherd mix, he's a year and 9 months.
We think he's mixed with whippet, because he has a lot of whippet behavior (ears back when scared, easily spooked) and loves to run. He's also a lot smaller than a normal sized German Shepherd. Vet tends to agree with my guess, but we'll never know for sure. He was a street dog, they found him at 6 months old and we got him last September. Never had a dog that I took to as much as I have Jack. He's a little pain sometimes, I'm no dog trainer, but I *think* when he starts acting like a pain, he's attempting to jump the social ladder and be *my* boss, so I have to lay down the law and keep him in line.
I also have my chocolate lab, Coco (came with the name) who's around 11. I adopted her from a shelter 5 years ago when she was 6. At the time, I was working 50-60 hour weeks and all I wanted to do when I came home was sleep, so she took to my mom and pretty much became my mom's dog. She's surprisingly healthy for her age, she's getting a little slow going up the stairs, and doesn't like to move around the house as much as she used to, just likes to pick a place and lay there, but she's not showing signs of hip dysplasia or anything life threatening yet.
Coco acts like she's starving a lot, so she's really easy to control with food. I think her previous owners might have neglected her. =\ Interesting thing about that, though, is whenever I'm vaping something that smells sweet, she's always GLUED to my side, licking the vapor if it's down on her level.
We've almost always had dogs in my life. When I was a little kid, we had two doxen, but had to give them up because of my dad's allergies. After his sphenoid surgery he was alright with dogs, so we found this REALLY sick lab/rottweiler mix who was about a year old that we named Brownie. My dad really took to her, and after we got her all nursed back to health and all she was a great dog for about 11 years, but she loooved to go under the fence. A couple years later we went looking for a dog for my sister (without her present) and found Judy, a yellow lab puppy, that we picked out for my sister but I wouldn't give her up, so we kept her. She later went blind and came down with diabetes, and around age 12 just laid down and gave up, so we had to put her down back in 2004. Before Judy got hip dysplasia she loved to go OVER the fence, so we had two escape artists.
My brother has a pit/beagle (we think beagle) mix. Since we got Jack, she's gotten too aggressive, and I don't allow her around Jack at all, keeping her gated out. She's attacked both dogs viciously, Jack's wound was a scratch (that left a scar) on his face, Coco's was a big gash on her head that took stitches. She does it again to either dog, she's outta here.

I've always liked having dogs. Not a cat person, definitely not a cast person.
