Well since it seems "Tootle Puffers" have continued the conversation and it has assisted others too . . .
Here is an Update to the "Uncle's" Computer Dilemma and FYI :
Okay - After all the assistance I got from everyone to fix a couple of things on "My" Laptop. . . I actually had an epiphany when I awoke this morning . . . AH - To get the splash screens I want back, I will have to install "Netware" . . . So - I followed the same direction that "Dinger" provide for the "Client for Microsoft Network" to finally get to "Client Service for Netware" in the properties selection list under the Network Connects
(just as "TrollDragon" suggested this morning too - AH GREAT MINDS
) . . . And - After another 4 hours installing, uninstalling, and then reinstalling programs/re-setting preferences - "My" computer operating system is back to the way it was before yesterday's fiasco that I seem to have caused . . .
SO - All in all, "Uncle" is a very happy camper right now . . .
Even with that said . . . Given the other information and suggestions posted since last night, there is some more I will have to consider now, including the following tidbits . . .
This should help you remove the Client for Netware from the network properties tab.
Get rid of "client services for netware" once and for all - TechSpot Forums
Yep - That's exactly what I did when I got up . . . AND - It worked like a charm too . . .
It's mentioned at the bottom of that page that it could possibly be spyware causing this issue, that might require quite a bit of work to get rid of.
If removing the Microsoft Netware Client doesn't do it, then you can run the following tools:
Combofix Only get it from Bleeping Computer
ComboFix Download
Word of Caution!
If your machine is
badly virused, then it is possible Combo Fix can put it in an unbootable state. I have yet to see this happen and I clean machines daily of viruses.
ADWCleaner
AdwCleaner Download
AH - Although I already have a couple of programs
(including Malwarebytes Free Version) that are supposed to find and get rid of adware, spyware, malware, phishing "Stuff" from "My" computer - I'm never really sure they do since I still get an inordinate amount of spam emails to a very private email address since I joined ECF . . . So - I am gonna have to try these out too and see if they find anything that NEEDS to be deleted also . . .
Good luck and let us know how you make out.
Once Again -
If you could see my room. I have PCs and laptops everywhere from friends, relatives and me that I'm working on so it doesn't bother me in the least to help someone when I can. If you decide to go with a re-install I would upgrade to 7 instead if I were you.
"You" know what, as purely an amature - I actually use to do this for "Myself" too and I was able to help a lot of Friends and Family, especially when it came to this kind of "stuff" . . . Like finding the unnecessary pre-installed programs that NEEDED to be removed; Adjust "User" setting specifically for them - particularly when there would be more then 1 person using the computer; Install & Set-up helpful Programs; Clean out unwanted files and then Defragment the hard drive, and if all else fails - Reformat & Reinstall OS . . . AND - Some People are still coming to "Me" for advice . . . But now, when it comes to the problems I encounter today - it's like WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED . . .
As - For upgrading to WIN 7 . . . Even though I did consider it when it first came out, decided against Upgrading for 3 very specific reasons 1) I had Win XP PRO (no problems with it then); 2) After checking with the "Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor" a few years ago, it seems I can upgrade to 7 with the laptop I have, however once again it would require a lot of Software programs/Upgrades for the hardware already installed on "My" Dell Laptop that I get very frustrated trying to find on Dell, although I have run a "BelarcAdvisor" too, and last but not least - 3) Way Too Expensive (even with a discount I could get from "My" Nephew-in-law who works for MS) . . . So - Although I should do something, I do not know what I will be doing yet . . .
Reinstall XP Pro or Upgrade to 7 . . .
(BTW: I may still reach out to "You" for assistance when I finally decide what I want/NEED to do . . . Well - if that is okay . . .
)
I think XP was one of their good programs but I love 7. I have 7pro but any version of 7 is good. They might as well of never released 8. It's going to be hard for them to ever top 7. I started out with Dos and have every program they ever made but I threw 8 in the trash.
Ya' know what - I started with DOS too
(and an Apple IIe - Don't like anything Apple
) and moved up all the way to Millennium and never had a problem like other people did . . . So I thought I would never upgrade that OS until I got a new laptop computer over 10 years ago from Dell that came with XP Pro . . . AND - I am quite serious when I say I've really liked it and haven't had a problem until a couple of years ago, just after I joined ECF . . . Since then, every so often something will just happen . . . OH BTW: That Nephew-in-law I mentioned, he worked in R&D at the time and I asked him about upgrading to 8 - first he gasped and then just started laughing - told "Me" that I should never ever consider upgrading to 8 even if I got it for free . . . Just Sayin' . . .
Anyway - It has taken "Me" over 2 hours to type a reply and give everyone an update - So I'M DONE ! ! !
(AND - Before anyone says anything . . . YES - 2 hours, especially since I am not a typist - just peck & paw at the keys . . . And - Worse I'm dyslexic and cannot spell either, so I have to go back and edit/format "My" post before I feel comfortable to actually let people so the post in the thread . . .
)
More importantly, I really think this conversation has gone on way to long here in "Tootle-Ville" and it's time to get back to discussing "Tootle Puffing" . . .
AND - Now I have to get back to trying to get some other important things done today, especially since tomorrow I will be getting "stuff" ready for "My" last 5-6 week trip up North on Wednesday and to the unbearable heat up there . . .
See You Later . . .
