What do you expect from (Moderated) wicks? Re-wicking my Evods with cotton just takes a couple of minutes and they need rinsing out after about 3-4 tanks anyway. I like sweet fruity juices.

I have to say, I find your continual references to feminine hygiene products distasteful to the say the least -- and I'm female, so I'm willing to bet that males may find it even more distasteful. I had been ignoring it, hoping the references would simply cease as the joke grew tired, but since you replied to me with this reference, I felt I should finally speak up.

Many, many things are made of rayon; not just feminine hygiene products. And to be truthful, modern feminine hygiene products were developed from surgical dressings, because of their absorbent qualities. Feminine hygiene products are necessary for half the population (excepting pre-adolescent and post-menopausal members of that half), but that doesn't mean we need to constantly discuss them (and the post-menopausal of us are REALLY GLAD to no longer need them!).

I really, REALLY miss the euphemistic days of "Modess... Because." I think that sort of delicacy departed around the same time that cigarette ads on TV did.

I finally figured out what ekowool is. I think :) Braided silica wick?

That's it exactly -- and when I was using those tanks with those tiny heads, I really found it to be the best choice; those tiny heads focus the heat so intensely, I always got burnt taste from cotton when I used those, but any kind of silica handles heat really well. :thumb: It sure simplifies dry-burning, too!

K no more feminine Hygiene product references. I just thought it funny as heck for wick material. And yes the day that women in commercials started setting out boxes of feminine hygiene products on their table in a restaurant..... Unlike many guys I have no problem buying those products for my wife.

I've had to pretty much abandon rayon; it just tastes like crap to me, even when I don't get a dry hit. Not sure why it used to have no taste to me, and now I can taste it everytime, unless it's just that my tastebuds are waking up, and my *already-very-keen* sense of smell has redlined. I'm very distressed that this is true, because rayon does wick much better, but I just can't handle the taste.

A friend PIFed me both some KGD and some Shiseido cotton, but to be honest, I don't find them a real improvement over the organic cotton from cotton balls. The taste is about the same, but the japanese cotton doesn't seem to last very long before I start tasting the hot-metal taste of the coil; I can get thru *maybe* 2 kayfun tank's full on one wick, but the next time I refill, I start getting that hot-metal taste. With the organic cotton from cotton balls, I can get 3 or 4 tanks out of one wick -- and even then, it's not *tasting* bad, but my juice gunks so it starts to darken the whole tankful if i don't change it after about 3 refills.

I find that if I pack the coil too tight with Rayon then there is a strong overpowering taste to the Rayon. All that is required to fix that, is to slide a little bit out of the coil till that taste goes away. You can do this with just the chimney bottom on the Kayfun and some fine tweezers.

I always test a Kayfun build with the chimney bottom and top installed after putting juice on the wick. Just take the chimney top off, pulls a little bit from the wick and test again till you find the proper amount to use.

My Tootle Puffin dahlinks...... I'm more than happy and willing to request a group forum for us if you'd like. I'm actually surprised we haven't been moved to the Lounge yet! I thought perhaps ECF would give us a week, then boot us out of here.
!
Yes its not fair:cry: They made The Subasidal Army go to the basement after just a few hours! But thats ok we can blow our clouds and tweak our coils on our 150W boxes and not bother anyone down there

When you disassemble the specific brand of product it contains a high quality grade of Rayon. That is all one is after and for those that want to try Rayon without having to purchase a 900' box. It is an inexpensive and easily available source...

How different is this from people buying cheap bottles of Melatonin from Wal*mart just for the Rayon wadding. Only the packaging that is different... :2c:

I think I'm just going to stick with my organic cotton balls; still got nearly a whole bag, and they're cheap when I do finally run out. The japanese cotton provides just as good flavor, and it does wick extremely well, better than rayon actually, but with it not lasting as long for a wick as the cotton-ball cotton, I find it a little too fussy. For an RDA, the JP cotton would be *superb*!

I know Busardo did that comparison, and he found the JP cotton to wick better than rayon too; the way I know is from priming my wick. I don't do the "bunny ear" thing; I actually cut the wick to the proper length just after inserting it into the coil; prime each end with juice so the ends will "stick" on the little ledges, and then assemble the chimney. With cotton-ball cotton, I need about 6-8 drops (depending on the coil's diameter) per end to achieve saturation; with rayon, about 4-5 drops per end; with the JP cotton, just 3 drops per end gets it fully saturated, though I do usually add one more drop right on top of the coil, once I get the bottom of the chimney in place.

Both the cotton-ball cotton and the JP cotton have a certain break-in time, though the Shiseido cotton seems to be the best in that regard. I never had much of a break-in with rayon, maybe 2-3 hits, but I just can't get past the taste of it, even when I'm not getting one of those ultra-foul dry hits -- the rayon itself just tastes bad to me, which is definitely a fairly new development.

I wonder if any of the coil manufacturers are putting rayon in their coils? I bought one pkg of clone evod coils that tasted horrible. Kind of a musty hot plastic taste. After trying 2 I just started rebuilding them without even trying them.
On the other hand I got some even cheaper coils from another source and they are fantastic right off the bat and appear to be silica. These are Evod BCC coils. $3.99 for 5 coils.

Andria, where specifically did you get your cotton balls and the brand? the reason I ask is that I got some and they had a perfumy taste to them.

Maybe you weren't using enough rayon, cause I was having an issue like that until I put far more in then I thought necessary. The thing about rayon is it doesn't expand when wet, it will actually shrink down, SSI of you don't have enough you end up with a dry spot somewhere in your coil

yes what I like about cotton is that it does swell up avoiding those dry wire spots. One of my early silica based wicks was a bit loose on one end and tasted bad.

Just Walgreens, whatever brand it is they carry that's about $2.49/$2.99 for a bag of 80 organic cotton balls. That perfumey taste might have just been because of where they had them, in the store, or what they were near during shipping -- if they're near the cosmetics for instance, since I think they're considered a cosmetic item. I haven't gotten any bad taste of any kind from mine, and I never boil them -- I found that boiling them actually made them taste bad.

So far I've only experimented with rayon in my sub tanks and my tootle puffer aerotank.....moving from Japanese cotton in the occ coils I've found the rayon to wick better then Japanese cotton. If you don't get the amount right it can taste bad, but once I figured it out I'm loving it..... Good thing too, since I have the infamous 900' box :p
