I haven't heard them for years. No consolation that my tinnitus makes about the same sound. Some get over 100 decibels. You can hear the ones here from 50 yds away driving by with your windows rolled up.

You had to remind me......I haven't heard them for years. No consolation that my tinnitus makes about the same sound.

Hi everyone. I just read the description of a tootle puffer and realize that's exactly what I am. So hi to all my fellow tootle puffers!
We have some every year every 12 years or so they are VERY thick and LOUD!We have the kind that only come out of the ground every 17 years. Noisy jokers.

We once had a squirrel monkey. One year there was a big crop. We collected them and froze them, and he enjoyed the feast for quite while.I've always been puzzled about that 17-yr or 12-yr or whatever cycle... we have them EVERY year, starting in July, and they're ALWAYS loud.
After living in suburbs and a rural area all my life, when I moved into Atlanta at the age of 19, I missed the sound desperately... Now, I live in suburbs again, far enough from the beastly city that cicadas are just part of the summer soundtrack. They're grotesque to look at, but my cat likes 'em.
