If mega retailers and industries can get hacked, with millions of passwords stolen, I think they can do the same here.
Im looking for a cheap warehouse for sale, preferably furnished with file cabinets... rows and rows of file cabinets to store all of these individual passwords I have accumulated from all the websites telling me to post a unique password different than used anywhere else..

I'd suggest you to check up "LastPass" It's great!

You only need a small address book. And then you don't care if your hard-disk crashes just before your next scheduled backup, or if the backup has failed, or if you forget the password for LastPass, or your new PC doesn't read the same database format as your old one, or ...

This is what I just got:

I did a reply to this post, in this thread. I replied to this one:

/forum/new-members-forum/536325-i-cant-stop-smoking-post12443354.html#post12443354

My reply post is:

/forum/new-members-forum/536325-i-cant-stop-smoking-4.html#post12444587

After I hit submit, as per complaints I didn't land at the end of the thread, but at the beginning. The beginning post is number 12441661

BUT: The URL ECF returned to my browser that, in theory, should have loaded was:

/forum/new-members-forum/536325-i-cant-stop-smoking.html#post12444587

Clearly it's not loading that URL. Ok, but it's sitting there in my browser URL window. If I hit reload the URL changes to:

/forum/showthread.php?p=12444587

And - ta da! - there I now am at my post - at the end of the thread and I'm where I should be.

Guess the question for you guys is what's wrong with this URL that ECF is returning:

/forum/new-members-forum/536325-i-cant-stop-smoking.html#post12444587

And why if I hit Reload for that URL does the site change it to this:

/forum/showthread.php?p=12444587

Does that help? I know I have seen this behavior in the past, when the option to go to your last post in threads you replied in wasn't working.

I seem to be experiencing the first unread post issue only if there is more than one page in the thread (mine are set to 40 posts/page, FWIW). So if it's 40 posts or less, it seems to work as expected. If 41+ posts, then it goes to the correct page, but only to the top of that page, and not to the correct post.

Can anyone else verify that this is what they're seeing?

Thanks!

Well yeah, but LP for example also stores them in the "cloud"
I let LP make an super strong password with all kinds of letter and special letters. And use it for all sites that i don't need to care about to much. So it just auto logs me in on the pages i've told it to.
Except on mail and such, there i use my own very safe ones.
I only use LP for sites that i'm confident that it wouldn't harm me so much if the pass leaks. (master pw)

To each of his own, i like LP :) At first i was kinda skeptical...
I was pretty good at reminding my passwords. but after about 15 diffrent passwords at 20+ chars (where it's possible) my brain couldn't handle any more :p So that's why i'm using LP for PW's for "random" sites if i call it that way.

And using my memorized once where it matters the most. :)
For example without LP i wouldn't be able to login here due it's strong password. Barely possible to remember, also i don't know how to make some of the special character that's used.

This site is not easy to hack because it's still small enough that we can control almost all of the vulnerabilities. Human error is always the hardest to prevent and this is what caught us out this time: we think a staff member used the same password on more than one site, and that is fatal. Even so, because we have staff working virtually 24/7, the damage was limited.

I'm looking for a cheap warehouse for sale, preferably furnished with file cabinets... rows and rows of file cabinets to store all of these individual passwords I have accumulated from all the websites telling me to post a unique password different than used anywhere else..

:) All you need is a password manager: Roboform, KeePass, LastPass for example. They're free. They can securely hold all the passwords you need, and this means you can use real passwords (gibberish strings of 20+ characters of at least 3 types). There are portable versions that will go on a USB stick, and are password-protected themselves of course.

I posted this in another thread and was asked to repost it here so,,,,,,,,,,,

It is working better today but still not able to use first unread, goes back to page one, if i use my last post usually takes me no to my post but the page it is on. some times after i post it goes to page one, sometimes not, (only)two or three times i got the boot when I post. very time i get the boot i clear cache & cookies clear history, not sure if I have to but i do. and then it usually takes a few attempts to get back on. I am using safari as a browser and sometimes new password works most of the time its the old one
just wanted to add I am using a macbook, not an iPad to iPhone just in case that info is helpful in any way

just wanted to add I am using a macbook, not an iPad to iPhone just in case that info is helpful in any way

I'm using a Mac, Mavericks 10.9.2 and Safari 7.0.2. I don't have the issue of being booted but do have the issue with the first unread post.

If a thread is only a single page and I click on the link in the thread title list in the forum the view first unread link appears and works correctly. If the thread is more than one page long the view first unread link appears but clicking on it takes me to the first page of the thread rather than the first unread post.

The view the first unread link does not appear if I navigate to the thread by clicking on the go to first new post from the thread list in a forum. It also does not appear if I navigate to the thread by clicking on the link in the email notification for new posts.

I also have the issue of being returned to the first page of a thread after replying to a post.

Hashed and Salted passwords are more secure yet. I realize this doesn't mean anything to a non programmer, but the bottom line is "they are encrypted, so they are safe" is not an accurate statement on it's own.

Yes. I understand that vB forum uses hashed & salted p/w's.

We have a separate DB server.

Thank you for reporting all the bugs.

There are so many right now that I can't promise when they'll all get done. The techies fix some every day, there are bigger ones right now such as some parts of the site aren't working at all.

!Tech stuff alert!
Most likely we have a situation where different apps need different PHP settings, which was easily fixed on our last host as we simply got a new box for anything that didn't play nice with the other stuff.

I think they are trying to run too many apps on too few boxes right now and are finding that you can't just put any bunch of server apps together and expect them to work straight off. You have to be an ace with local php.ini settings to do that, plus it sometimes needs an .htaccess fix to get a local php.ini file to work, and then when you throw Nginx server into the mix as well - you really need to know your onions. Probably we've got a mix of apps that need old and new PHP versions, register_globals on and off, magic_quotes on and off, local /tmp/ paths for each, .htaccess fixes without an htaccess file, and all the rest :)

Sooner or later we'll get there, it might need some new hardware added before everything is hunky-dory.

    in a cave, eh?
There's an article by Bruce Schneier on passwords, if that helps.

Choosing a Secure Password - Boing Boing

And I would be in the ditch IE crowd. IE may not be the current source of your login problems, but I would still regard it as an accident waiting to happen. I alternately refer to it as either "Internet Exploder" or "Firefox Downloader". Use Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, whatever, but just say no to IE. :)

For a minute yesterday, my name was showing on every quote a person had picked up after she grabbed my quote. I was also shown as the person being quoted for the rest of that page. Then I got kicked off. Hasn't happened since, but then I haven't managed to stay on long enough !

Join CASAA and have a voice for vaping.

That has always happened to me if I multi-quote. I have to go back and uncheck the posts I quoted or they would continue to show up on subsequent posts. I remember reading a thread about it and I seem to recall it commonly happened after multi-quoting and there was no solution except to go back and uncheck.

I hope they get "Go To Last Unread" and where you end up after you post sorted out. I keep getting lost.

For me, it just stays on page 1 of the thread -- does not even take me to the top of the last page I viewed . . .
