Purchased a Riva, some 555 and RY4 pre-filled cartomizers and some RY2 juice and blank cartomizers. Over the last two days, I've tried all three. This was some of the worst tasting stuff I've ever put in my mouth, much less in my lungs. Doubt that I'll continue my foray into ecigs after such a bad start.

Anyone else have such a rough beginning?

Don't really know if I should touch this thread, sorry for your trouble mate. I'll will say this though, you started with an advanced user model, one that comes with a pretty steep learning curve. Personally, I had no issue with the transition - and I was an analog user for 25+ years -you might want to try an analog-styled, pre-filled carto system. I found that once I had equipment I knew would work, THEN I began searching the vast array of juice options. Once you get past this - it's all down hill from there. Read more, check out the ECF library, specially the videos on "I made a video for noobs, specially the broke ones".

Just my $0.02 -

:?: Steep learning curve for a Riva with pre-filled cartomizers? It's just a 510 with a bigger battery.

mort, no I didn't have should a rough beginning, but I bought juice flavors that were recommended in the e-liquid discussion forum and from vendors also recommended there. The only problem I had was my first vape was primer fluid in the atomizer, yuk! I don't know where you got your stuff from, maybe their liquid just sucks?

I knew I shouldn't have chimed in - but, yeah - e-cigs in general represent a pretty steep learning curve - out of the gate dripping blank cartos with juice from a yet-to-be-named vendor? I don't think I would have had much success going this route either and may have arrived at the same conclusion that the OP did. Had I not stuck to the 'keep-it-simple' analog-styled device at first, I think I would probably be a smoker still today.

Apologies if my post caused grief - certainly not my intention.

I dont know anything about the model you're using but I will just say this, I think that most of us have made e cig purchases that we are not happy with. For most of us it took a while to find the e cig that was right for us and the juices that we like as well. It also did take me a few weeks to figure out how to vape properly. Don't give up just yet! Vaping surely isn't for everyone but I for one am entirely grateful for this coming into my life.

No question, the juice is the biggest hurdle. Finding something you like makes all the difference in the world. I didn't care for the prefilled carts either.

Read though the juice review section. It's a very simple thing to fill up cartos and when you find a great juice you love you will be hooked!

Choosing the right flavor is tough, and taste reviews, especially for tobbaco-y flavors, are often not helpful. I personally couldn't stand RY4, though many people love it - it tasted like burnt sugary something to me. 555 seemed sweet and nutty, but I wasn't crazy about it. RY2 I have never tried, but from a couple descriptions I've read, it sounds a bit like 555. Early on, I wasn't thrilled with any tobacco flavors, as even if they tasted OK, they reminded me more of an unlit cig, which I didn't find particularly satisfying. I found that I liked coffee flavors, some of which had the kind of "dirty" bite of an analog. One day I tried a sample of menthol, and was amazed at how refreshing and satisfying it was - I had never liked menthol cigs at all. I tried a few different menthol flavors and eventually settled on Halo Menthol Ice, and it has been my daily go-to flavor for almost a year now. Get a bunch of small samples, or even try mixing your own (see the DIY e-liquid section of the forum).

Best of luck to you - hope you find the flavor that makes you say good-bye to cigs!

He bought pre-filled cartomizers as well. No grief, I just didn't understand the statement.

I don't get that either. This thread has taken a turn.

I think the prefilled carts were pretty nasty too. If I hadn't have bought juice and some cartomizers beforehand I would have felt the way this person did. Plus, maybe he didn't clean out the atty.

I'd suggest they get a couple boxes of boge cartomizers, and some sample packs of juice. Give them a try.

Whoops, my bad. I guess I 'glazed' over the word "pre-filled" and picked up on the words "juice" and "blank"... That said - yeah, there are a ton of flavors available -- too many IMO. OP, don't give in - there's a large number of choices out there - we all had to go thru this and some find our 'sweet spot' sooner than others -

Is it the taste of the ejuice or the riva/cartomizer that you don't like? If it is the cartomizer, you might want to try carts first that are easier to fil. If it is the taste of the ejuice - what brand of analog did you smoke?

When I first started vaping, I went with the Marlbaro flavor because that is what I was smoking when I switched. It took some experimenting with different vendors to find the one that suited me the best. But as luck would have it my tastes have changed where I only want the tobacco taste with my first couple of cups of coffee and then a milder fruit flavor for the all day vaping.

Don't give up yet. If I was doing it all over again,I would have steered way clear of any tobacco juice in the beginning. No matter how great of tobacco flavor it is,it isn't anything like burning leaves and other gunk. Look at some of the juice suppliers here and look for things you like to eat or drink instead. Vaping isn't smoking,so you can't walk into it with the same criteria.or expectations.

I think you made a wise choice... Riva, eGo, etc... are the standard tried and true ecig and for good reason....
You have trouble with the juice... if you found your way past the crap ecigs, you'll probably use the same discretion and research juice threads here.

You haven't learned dripping vs carts vs cartos vs feeder PVs... it can be a fun ride, it can be a fiasco... i think your determination and affinity for vaping will determine how you do.

Regarding juices, try to get the smallest samples first.... of course you'll have to wade through factors such as shipping fees, prices, tastes... many and varied.
You can save some money by checking the juice swap/sell threads but you should "know" the juices a bit by reading up on reviews.

I'm not really a tobacco flavor man myself even though i smoked analogues (american spirit) you may go for the other types of juices.

No question, the juice is the biggest hurdle. Finding something you like makes all the difference in the world. I didn't care for the prefilled carts either.

You did pick somewhat weird tobaccos to start out with. 555 is a vanilla almond tobacco and some 555's are very nutty. RY4 is a vanilla caramel tobacco - some are less sweet and some are almost like candy.

Did you get any tobacco samplers to see what you like? Vapor4Life has (i think) 3 tobacco sampler packs, each with 1 carto each of 5 flavors.

I don't fill cartomizers anymore until I know I like the juice. Did your Riva come with atomizers? If so, you could try dripping a few drops of any new liquids on to the wire mesh/wick, put on a cartridge (without filler) and vape it. I'd suggest getting some samples from a recommended vendor or two to find something you like better. I don't have any of those flavors or any juice from those vendors so I can't really speak to that.

Personally, I've enjoyed juices from vaperite.com, avejuice.com (has samples), vaporbomb (I got several 5ml bottles of different flavor and different ratios of pg/vg and nicotine strength). I have received some flavors I thought I'd love, but do not care for. My current favorites: Kona Cream and English Toffee from vaperite.com, C&D (tobacco flavor) from avejuice.com, Green Apple from vaporbomb.com and Tennessee Cured (Red Oak line) from Johnson Creek.

My 2 cents is that it is the flavors. Some of the tobaccos can be harsh. I didn't like any of them at first, but have now found I have accumulated a taste for the milder ones. My suggestion is to give menthol a try even if you aren't a menthol smoker. It has a refreshing flavor with a good throat hit, and you can feel it in your lungs. Some of the fruity, chocolate or creamy flavors really only give the flavor with very little hit. Save the tobaccos you ordered, buy a mild menthol, and eventually combine the two.

Best wishes!
