I tend to vape where ever I want I haven't ever gotten more the bewildered looks or people smiling at me about it. I don't do it to be a rebel I just don't think about it. I'm usually following my wife around bored shopping or at one of our favorite restaurants. I have had quite a few people ask me hey whats that but no confrontations yet.

I haven't been challenged. I have had a people ask me what it is and that gave me a chance to educate people. I am in one of the few places that isn't highly anti smoking though so that may have something to do with it. Personally I don't tend to vape in stores but that is more habit than anything. I think its a bad idea to only smoke where smokers do though set us up to be seen like smoking. I refuse to hide what I am doing. There is nothing wrong with it and by hiding I make it seem like it is.

I don't vape in public areas unless I get permission first. If not, I join the stinky kids. The people have as much right not breathing in chemicals as you have vaping.

Any incident with somebody allergic to PG/VG having a reaction to 2nd hand vapor? I'm surprised this hasn't happened yet.

Also think of it from the business side. Would I want to make 1 customer happy who wants to vape vs multiple customers who may be ignorant about e-cigs and freak out?

I would just buy the book, go home and enjoy my vape with a beer.

I'm with bigjr and a couple of others that have posted. I have not had any adverse responses other then the rare question if I was smoking indoors. I then inform them what it is and answer any followup questions. The response has in all cases except one been positive. The one negative response was from someone that was a former smoker, in his 70's, that didn't like the smell.

There will be some that don't like it and are polite, some that don't understand it and some that are just rabid anti-smokers. You can accommodate the first, educate the second and in my case, choose not to be around the last. There are groups and people trying to push ......... as "medicine" but anything associated with tobacco is "evil"... sheesh

This (insert product) can be harmful attitude can be taken too far. People still go to hospitals even though we've now helped cause lethal strains of bacteria due to over use of antibiotics and antibiotic products, many people still drive cars even though gas has a warning label on the pump that it may cause cancer, ect ...

I don't push that I'm vaping in people's face, I don't blow huge plumes of vapor, but at the same time I don't take being treated as a pariah either.

Just had a thought....
You could BUY the book and take it home, curl up in your favorite chair and be quite content. Another thought, get a Kindle or Nook or something and never leave your favorite chair in the first place. Problem solved.

+1 Totally agree. Never have understood wanting to sit in a store to read, much more comfy at home. Browsing the forum tonight on my Nook ( which I love BTW).

Reading books at Barns N Noble is really more of a "Social Event" :2cool:

I'd like to see a report about half the water in the US being unsafe to drink....haven taken classes in municipal water treatment I know that water treatment facilities are held to strict guidelines and do rigorous testing. Could you imagine the lawsuits otherwise?

In any case, drinking tap water vs. bottled water vs. water you distill yourself is, again, a personal decision. I am not saying vaping is bad, or that vapor is toxic. I am just saying that a) we don't have rigorous studies that prove that e-cig vapor is safe to inhale and b) putting out clouds of vapor that other people then breathe in without first getting their consent is discourteous.
Not everyone uses municipal water there are a lot of wells out there. As far as I know municipal water is safe most of the time.

I won't go as far as to say that vaping is safe in the long run because we don't know. I will say that no one is going to die from second hand vapor.

The only time I ask if it is ok to vape is in restaurants.

Some of us are older, and had been smoking long enough to remember--with some degree of fondness--when it was completely allowed to smoke in restaurants, stores, at work, etc. I don't favor trying to freak people out, but it's rather nice to be able to at least stealth vape darn near anywhere I please.

As for the ...... who refuse to listen to an explanation--or who claim, after an explanation, that it's "the same thing,"--yeah, I prefer to avoid them.

"Safe" is a definitional word.
I live in a major metropolitan area and I drink tap water
AFTER its filtered through a very expensive hard-carbon filter.
Personal preference? ... Yea, but as far as I'm concerned, its a no-brainier :2cool:
People believe what they want to believe regarding the water being "Safe"

For all those that believe municipal water is clean and safe..."Opinions vary"

I think it's a reasonable policy. In my experience, if you're discrete about it, and hold the vapor in a little longer so you're not billowing big clouds, basically no one cares. But I try and respect others, because even if vapor isn't harmful it does have a smell, and I suspect some people are sensitive to some ingredients.

I live in a city in Texas of about 25,000 people. About 3 or 4 times a year we get a postcard in the mail saying that city water has tested high in this or that. My favorite was 'turbidity'. LOL!! My husband says every time he gets in the shower we are being hit with the 'turbs'! I have two dogs and five birds. Not one of them have drank city water since they came to live at my house. We buy RO water. As for vaping replacing smoking...funny how the cockatiels have quit coughing since I stopped my 3 pack a day habit!! Go figure!

Just look at where things are headed with smoking bans...

--No smoking in a public park
--No smoking in your car with a child present
--No smoking anywhere in the vicinity of a school
--No smoking anywhere in the vicinity of a hospital
--No smoking anywhere in the vicinity of a government facility
--No smoking anywhere on the grounds of any government run housing
--No smoking in your own home if it is government run housing
A day will come when smoking will be banned out in the country.
No smoking within 1 mile from the nearest Cow.

What I've always found amusing is that everyone on the planet
except for smokers and tobacco companies want smoking banned
but the sale of tobacco will never ever be banned
:p

At the movie theatre, in airplanes, at the doctors office. Honestly, back when I started smoking, there were very, very few places where you couldn't smoke.

I'm not willing to treat vaping like smoking. I'm not going to stand in the cold in the winter and the heat in the summer to vape. I'm not going to stand next to a bunch of smokers so that my clothes smell like theirs. I'm not smoking, and I'm not going to act like I am.

Sometimes I just openly vape. Sometimes I stealth, depending on where I am. Sometimes I just wait until later. But I never go to the smoking areas. Those places stink.

I hope this comes off as un-rude as possible...I mean, as smokers we weren't able to smoke everywhere we wanted...

That's only true the last 30 years of so. Prior to that, everyone that smoked smoked almost everywhere. At their desks/cubes; in doctor's office waiting rooms; in public lunch rooms/restaurants; balconly of movie theatres.

Quite frankly, I feel some degree of guilt having subjected my wife of 43 years to the rank stench of living with a smoker. While you're smoking, your senses of smell and taste are nearly dead, particularly to smoking oders.

The only way it will ever be acceptable almost everywhere again is if the vapers do it almost everywhere. I have reservations. . .I don't know if it's affecting my or anybody elses health. I know I feel better than when I smoked tobacco, but. . .we're all just being willing Lab Rats at this point. JMHO

Cheers,
otrpu

I agree...We are ALL "Lab Rats" ... PERIOD
Think about the water that comes out of the kitchen tap...and the food we eat
Over the counter drugs - prescription drugs IE (FDA Approved Chantix)
In many cities we have "Air Quality Alerts" ... The list is endless !!

"Ask your Dr. if Chantix is right for you"
Nothing but another Chantix disclaimer
"Don't sue us...Sue your Doctor"

Nothing in the world today is 100% Safe
We are all Lab Rats .... AKA "Cash Cows"
E-cigs are the least of my concerns

I hope this comes off as un-rude as possible.. But I really don't get people that strive to vap in public places? I mean, as smokers we weren't able to smoke everywhere we wanted. And 99% of us just took it for granted. I know vaping isn't really harmful to those around us, but it still confuses people because the general public really has no idea what an e-cig is. For that fact, I only really vap were I can smoke. Or I'll take a quick puff and hold it in if I'm at a concert, ballpark, public restroom, etc. I would feel just odd puffing away while reading at Barnes N Noble. And would expect someone to eventually get in my face about it, lol

While I don't really care one way or another if somebody else vapes in public places that cigs are not allowed in, I just know I will likely never do it. I like to avoid conflict and being out of the public's eye, because I generally care too much about what other people think of me. I was always self-conscious about smoking in public (or really anywhere because most people are so 'offended' by it), and I wouldn't even dare vape in restaurant or somewhere else that smoking was banned. Perhaps if I was drunk and lost my inhibitions, but definitely not sober!

Is definitely an interesting social experiment though to intentionally vape where smoking is banned, and I could see my brother doing this as he is good with these kinds of things. But for me, no way! The less attention I get the better, no matter what I am doing.
